poor
i used to play this course a lot 7 years ago and it was superb but now it is awful . the greens are long ,bumpy, and full of old dead pitchmarks. the t boxes are like weed ridden and have next to no grass on them and the fairways are poor at best..the bunkers are in great condition though. i got a hot price of $18 and that is about the price they should be charging all the time. this course needs a lot of tlc and 1/2 a million bucks thrown at it
Glendoveer East
Walked the blues (68.8/123/6157) in 3h, 45m on a Sunday afternoon Golf Now rate of $22. Glendoveer is an older, shorter course in NE Portland that gets a ton of play, many of which are novice or high handicap golfers. Unique layout, par 73 with five par 5's and four par 3's. I like the layout, it's fun. A couple of par 4's that are potentially driveable for longer hitters. The fairways are tree lined with huge mature trees. A decent assortment of open, tight and a couple of very tight holes. Not that many water hazards or OB holes, but plenty of places in the trees to lose a ball if you get crooked. Considering that it's in the city, there were almost NO houses visible along the course, and there is a walking/running trail that loops around the outer edge of the course. While the layout was fun, the course conditions were not fun. The greens were soft, a bit bumpy, slow & I averaged fixing about a half dozen ball marks per green, and that was just just around my ball or in my line. I never did get their speed down. The tees were in fair shape & many had severe divot damage that needed repair. The fairways were at best fair, many of them had alot of divot damage. There were numerous places in many fairways that looked like they had inserted "plugs" of grass to try and regrow the bad browned/hardpan areas, w/o alot of success to this point. The rough was generally mowed down and semi-lush, you usually could make good contact on shots out of the rough. There were also large areas of hardpan under the huge trees that lined both sides of every hole. The sand was very well maintained, and I was in 6 traps total, so I should know. The traps were by far the best maintained part of the course. They have a driving range off mats, clubhouse, pro shop, snack bar and highly rated restaurant on site. Customer service in the pro shop & with the starter was a ++. This course is questionable, and it's in a questionable section of town. Last time I played here, I stopped beforehand at a fast food place about 2 miles away and provided 2 separate witness statements to police during a 45 minute lunch. First, a homeless guy went off in the restaurant & was threatening people. Then just a few minutes after the police left, there was an armed robbery in the parking lot about 20 yards from where I was eating lunch? I have played app. 25 courses this summer, and this was the worst conditioned course I have played. I could not recommend this course, there are numerous local courses close by that are better to MUCH better.
Fun & challenging for most players, but soggy.
I've played the East course about four times in the last year and have found it to be fun & challenging for me. There were some (white) tee areas and some areas around some of the greens that were very soggy, but the fairways were satisfactory, for the most part. The golf carts are gas powered and getting old, so there were some times when I thought we weren't going to make it up the hills, and I thought $14 per player is high for a public course and for what you get.
Pre-7am start, good shape, <4 hours to play (2 1/2-some)
Got out a few minutes before scheduled time. Beautiful day. Course was in good shape, greens a bit slow, but pretty smooth. Bunker experience not great - a little tight with the sand in the fairway bunkers.
Course previously better maintained
Hadn't played this course in years, and as summer rate is $17pp for 9 holes, held off until we were able to get a deal through Golfnow. Paid $15pp, and with the plethora of beautiful courses in the city of Portland, which provide super summer rates, we were a bit disappointed with the course condition at the price. We have been playing much nicer maintained courses all around town. The fairway and rough was pitted, missing grass in areas which was replaced by hard dirt/mud. There was seed thrown on some of the dirt, but no appropriate cover to help the seed grow. The greens were in good condition, but otherwise the course was not well maintained. We won't be back unfortunately with all the additional nicer course options around Portland, many at better rates.
Good course, great staff, but found Golf Now App dissapointing
The course was very nice, lined with tall trees so shady on a hot day and walkable, with a few hills though.
Staff was very nice and very helpful.
Got a better deal at course than Golf Now App offered, still had to pay the Golf Now fees, still made more sense to eat the fees and re-book at course, kinda defeated the purpose but you live and learn. Will check direct booking of TeeTimes with courses in future to see which rate makes more sense.
Short, great scenery
Very beautiful on the back 9. Watched as a coyote tried to eat a blue heron. Lots of deer on the course also. Course is not very difficult.
Good old course
Good old course with lots of shade on a hot day! Stay out of the tree and score well. Not an easy walking course but can be done. East course is the best of the two
Needs work
The staff was great, very friendly. But the west course is in terrible shape for only being a couple months into summer. Tons of bare spots all over fairways and greens; dry, course grass on fairway. Greens had large and small aeration holes on a number of them, along with ruts and diseased spots that are not being fixed. It's July but there is still quite a bit of sand on several greens, affecting the roll and speed of a putt.
I won't play this course again.
Needs Help (Glendoveer West Course)
It is an easy course but needs serious attention to the fairways and greens. The greens are green, but very slow and bumpy and do not roll true.(Puts seem to have a mind of their own sometimes.) Fairways have many dead spots, not from lack of water though. Fairways were plugged in the spring, but have not healed well, and have died in some areas. For the money there are other course that are in MUCH better condition. Pace of play was good though, sand in the bunkers was actually excellent, but the fairway grass and greens need help.
What happened?
I have played at Glendoveer for over 20 years, though it has been a couple since the last time I played. The course was in the worst shape I have ever seen. It appeared as if it hadnt been watered in over a week. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in bad shape. Only 5 or 6 holes were in better than decent shape. The price was great, but I wouldve paid another 5 bucks or so to be able to hit off grass, and not have to put through burnt patches and aeration holes.
West side much easier
Played a 3 some on the West side, it was great.
The greens were perfect and the weather was awesome.
I would recommend the west side for an easy day, not many hills and shorter pars.
Course in poor condition
To be fair the course is under new management because the county is searching for ways to collect more revenue. The new management company is clearly trying to make changes to the overall facility but to the demise of the course. Unfortunately it appears the course conditions seems to be lower in priority than, getting matching tee shirts for proshop staff, printing new score cards, building aesthetics fences around the adjoining restaurant, etc... My buddies and I historically try to play between 20-30 rounds here a year. We all agreed that it is definitely not worth playing, even for free until they give more attention to the course.
Fun, but slow
Pretty parklike course with lots of tall pines lining most holes.
Easy to find stray shots, though lots of players in carts criss-crossing holes looking for errant shots is very distracting.
Fairways ok (recently aerated)but plenty of brown patches.
Greens ok but far from excellent condition. Bunker sand ok, not too many...mostly around the greens.
Slow front nine, back was faster...I guess there are lots of 9-holers.
Fun overall, but I wouldn't rush back...good deal with 'Hot Deal' pricing if you have time and just want to get out to swing.
not bad
not a bad track. could use help on greens. bumpy and a little slow. need to change out gas carts.
great course
Awesome layout for an old course. Drivable par 4's really make you think before you choose your stick. Can't wait to play it again now that I know more.
Old course,well maintained
Haven't played Glendoveer for many years. The course was in very good shape, pace of play was good. The staff were friendly, and helpful. We had a very good experience on an old well maintained course, and will definitely return ; especially at the very reasonable price we got on Golf Now !
I enjoyed playing the course and its condition. It is a good workout if you walk it too.
If you enjoy a mature tree lined golf course, then Glendoveer East is for you. It is well maintained and the pace of play is pretty good for a muny. Pretty good value for the money I'd say.
The staff was very warm and friendly. They also recognized the slow pace of play and worked to speed it up. I would go back to this course in a second
This course has some pros and cons. The course itself is mediocure but it has some really challenging holes. The course lay out is above average in my opinion and the greens were fairly true. I really liked this coures overall. I had 3 birdies which made the day a success.
