Glendo West
Great value. Hardly anyone there day we played. Fairways nice enough to play it down. Greens in good shape. Tee boxes could use improvement. Joked around with staff and starters. GREAT restaurant, obviously W/ Ringside
Course has improved but still needs more
I've played Glendoveer East several times throughout the years, when it has been a City of Portland course, and now that it is under new management for the past couple years. All of the old mature trees, and steep uphill holes can make the course a lot more challenging than the course rating makes it seem. I have noticed that the condition of the fairways and rough have gotten much better, but the tee boxes and greens leave a lot to be desired. For the greens, the biggest complaint (and it's a big one) I have is that the holes seem to be really small. The regulation golf hole is 4.25" in diameter. The holes on this course seem to have the edges pushed in towards the hole on every single green, with the hole diameter seemingly about 3.5". I don't know if that's because of the rainy conditions, players before me messing up the holes, or the greens keeper doing a poor job cutting the holes. Maybe it's my imagination; I'm not sure. But golf is hard enough with regulation-size holes and this doesn't help the enjoyment of the average golfer. I would've given it 4 stars overall if it weren't for this issue.
two great courses have seen better days
Glen is facing challenges. Changes in management. Greens in poor condition(player abuse), ball marks, bad repairs if any. Dandilions everywhere on the West Side. I hope new management can address these issues and return Glendoveer to its previous glory days.
Getting better!
The last time I played this course, it was in the middle of the Winter-Spring transition. This time it was during an unseasonably warm/hot day of the year where the temps reached 90. Luckily it wasn't humid. The course played great for the most part except on this particular day the greens were thicker than normal and played a bit spongy. On a dry stretch of weather, you'd expect fast greens. This time, it was unexpected to have to put more into the putts due to the length of the greens' grass. Overall it made an interesting challenge.
Portland Parks (or whoever) is putting a lot of renovations into this course. I used to look forward to having cheaper green fees at this course, but with the new changes and upgrades (which are appreciated, mind you) I will expect an increase of fees.
It's still a good, complete facility with new electric carts and generally friendly people. There are a few public weirdos randomly about because of the walking/running trail, but if you're a native Portlandian or a seasoned implant, you pay them no mind.
Make sure to visit Ringside after for bites and drinks. Some of the best steak in town and a pretty good happy hour to boot.
glendoveer east
poor drainage, but perfect summer course. much prefer to ride the next time.
Great value
The West side at Glendoveer is fun but simple, it's a little under kept but seems to hold well until the summer months. This experience was great however getting rained out at 9 was a little rough. Still a great value at 9.50 (for 18) just bummed I couldn't finish ( because of thunder storms)
branches on the course
The West was in terrible shape except for the greens. The course had not been cleaned up from fallen branches (#3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). I am sure that Mr. Johnson (father of vince) was not happy with the shape of the course.
Fun course
This course has its challenging hills, fir trees and two longer holes for fairway practice. I have seen the greens in better shape, but the course was better for spring than I have seen before. Great staff.
nice home course close
I like playing this course, because of its proximity to me. Very fun and open course with lots of opportunity to improve
good time with friends
this was my first time out this year. the weather was good and the course was in pretty good shape. the greens were a little inconsistent but we managed. im sure I will golf there again someday
super slow!
Really didn't have fun because of the extremely slow play. The starters put out 5-6 twosomes in a row, (we hooked up with the twosome ahead of us) and we played the front 9 twice hoping it would be faster than continuing on with 2 groups on every tee box. (it wasn't). Couldn't get a rhythm due to waiting for every shot.
West side: Easy but fun course if you stay out of the trees.
This course is easy with wide fairways but can be challenging if you shoot it into the trees. The greens ran quick (that day) for the most part, but there were some spots of mange. Lumpy parts on some greens were bad enough to knock the ball off line. The course is under new management so I hope they bring it up in quality. A great course to walk but the back side is hilly.
Glend. East
Greens not managed. Bunkers not maintained. Overall, rates raised do not meet expectations...
Very happy with improvements
I like the updates they have made her a lot. Clubhouse is much improved, good driving range. Course is in good shape, especially for mid-winter. Staff very friendly and helpful. Service in the restaurant could be better.
Great day for golf on Thanksgiving
I played on Thanksgiving thanks to a deal I found on golfnow, my 2 sons and I played. The course was fairly sparse which made our pace of play under 4 hours which was perfect. We got done in time to catch the second half of the Cowboys game and just before dinner was served.
Thanks again Golfnow, I might have to make this a turkey day tradition!
Nice course, but greens had a lot of debris
The course will test your skills in keeping it in the fairway. There is a lot of up and down compared to the West side course. We were disappointed that most of the greens had a lot of debris on them and it was not a windy day. There was some rain in the morning and because of leaves on the fairways and steep grades we ended up spinning down the hillside on hole 2 about 3 times. They probably should not have let carts out that day and when we made the turn found out they had suspended any more carts from going out soon after we had taken off. It is a friendly course, and being fall it is fair to say them may have difficulty keeping the course cleaned up.
pretty, fairly challenging.
nice course just challenging enough. fairways wide enough to avoid trees most of the time. sand could be a little better . nice variety as to up and down terrain and length of holes. fun to have par 4s that are driveable. noty much water but I can live with that.
A Place to Play
Would consider this my home course, Would rate it as being typical. Has changed ownership in the last year, no real apparent changes to condition. Course is full of fir and maple trees, which both leave alot of debris in fairway and greens also.
All green have debris that needs to be cleared for each putt.
I play this course out of convienence of location. Have a better time at most all other courses in the portland area.
