Good Greens; Poor Course Conditions
The starter put us off the West for pay of the West/North combination of courses. The foursome in front of us was so slow that it took over 5 hours to complete the round. Tis seems to be common for Etowah now. We played a few months ago and it took almost 3 hours to play just the West and we quit and went home. We played at 2:30 pm and expected to be ther late enough to play at a moderate pace.
The Greens were in very good shape, especially on the North Course. The West were good but had so many ball marks that they were not as consistant as the North. I was surprised to find that the fairways had not been cut and were very long. They were not wet, so I was surprised. They have done a lot of work to clean up the course but have not kept up course maintenance.
I can't recommend because the pace is just too slow to be able to enjoy the round.
Good track, Great value
Always enjoy this course. Played South 9 and the North which is a mountain 9 that can be intimidating the first time you play it, but once you are familiar with the layout and can play with a strategy it is very enjoyable
great day to play golf
Great place to play and price was great...fairway good shape green ok pace good.
Gnats gone wild
Great people, nice course other than fairways are very rough. Greens roll great. The gnat infestation is unbearable, they swarm you from tee to green on every hole.
Nice layout
All 3 of the 9 hole layouts are fun and challenging and the variety makes me keep coming back
Good deal for the money.
Course was in pretty good shape greens had been punched recently but rolled very true. The bunkers on some holes were a little rough in places, but I think they are difficult to maintain here in Western NC. Azaleas were in full bloom and plantings around holes added attractive borders to course. I think this is one of the better value courses in the Asheville area.
Great value
I got to play this course with a buddy of mine and it was a great value. I think we paid about $28 per person which is a great deal. The course was very wet and had just been aerated but I would like to play it again when the conditions are better.
Overall Good
They had just aerated the greens (3/17/18) so they were in very bad condition. By the first of April things should be looking good for the course.
Beware the Men's League
I had a hot deal time. Little did I know about the men's league. They walk slow and play slow and won't let you play through. You wait on every shot and at the tee box. They are a collective bunch of guys who backed up the course . Golf now should never book times during their playing time. Their lack of courtesy is remarkable for supposably experienced players. Why would anyone want to become a member of the course if this is who they would play with?
The review from 12/31 is right on target. There are 3 nines. Put the league by themselves on one of those so the rest of us can play in a reasonable amount of time
It was a beautiful day of golf ruined by a bunch of golfers who feel they are entitled and can back up the rest of the course.
Still waiting
Let me start by saying that I love the course. Great layout, good conditions. Two things you need to know. 1) Only members can walk. Not a huge deal but it's much easier to stay warm walking if the temps are under 40 degrees. 2) If you are behind the Men's Golfing Association you will not finish in under 4:30, EVER. I doesn't matter how many holes the last group falls behind, they will never let you play thru. Nothing will be done by the course to help you, you are their prisoner for the remainder of your round. I will be back in another 6 months to see if things have changed to provide a better quality experience to all patrons, not just the MGA.
Nice day, Beautiful course or beautiful day and nice course
Weather was great for the end of November. The course was full, but not crowded. In spite of dormancy, the grass played well.
Brown fairways- fast greens
Great rate from golf now. Frost delay put the morning groups on the south course, leaving the west course wide open. Hard to see your white ball on the brown grass in the bright sunlight.
The greens ran fast and all the cups were not on flat ground. Very challenging. All in all, a very nice round
Only for a hot deal
I got a really cheap deal with Golf Now so I really didn't care that the course wasn't in the best of shape.
Greens were very fast (which I love) but the rest of the course was going into it's winter grass conditions.
There were many wet spots so not much roll if you hit into them. The course is long for a senior golfer but I did score well due to my short game. The greens didn't hold any balls, even those hit with a gap wedge.
I hope that when the new owners take over, that they improve the course and decrease the huge bunkers around most of the holes.
Love Etowah, but slow pace
Love playing Etowah, but the pace was much too slow. Our foursome was placed behind a twosome who were walking and a separate twosome on a cart. Both of them played so slowly, it was almost unbearable at times. Our round took 5.5 hours to play, and we just finished before the sun went down. Will definitely be back, because Etowah is a great course to get to play.
Good option to consider in Asheville (NC) area
(Writing this as a review for people playing the first time).
Very friendly staff. Pretty part of the country, of course, and some great vistas here. Played through some regulars who we also very nice and offered some tips.
Played the South then the West 9s at the 27 hole facility.
If you like dog-leg right holes, this is your place! Especially for the South nine. I don't recall any dog-leg lefts, but at least 7-8 to the right.
If you are a longer hitter off the tee (by that I mean you hit it 250+), you want to play from the back tees on the South, or just calm down on the tee and hit a shorter club and play target golf.
The West nine is a bit more practical, and open, off the tee.
Very quick greens, in good shape. The ball will hold on well-struck approach shots. big thumbs up on the greens!
Fairway conditions are just okay, but with a pretty good amount of slope, and it being November, that is understandable.
Overall, its an enjoyable, near-the-mountains type golf club and community. Its not going to win awards for design or conditions, but is a very playable and welcoming place in the Asheville area that has a lot to offer.
Beware of the white squirrel(s)!!!!
3 great courses to choose from
Well maintained greens and fairways for the price. Courteous staff.
Greens were the best thing about the course. Fairways were patchy in places, especially on the North side, but to be expected this time of the year. Nice local option to play if you find a good deal on golf now.
