Northwoods Golf Course
About
Northwoods Golf Club is one of the Columbia area's premier public courses. P.B. Dye, son of renowned course architect Pete Dye, designed the layout, incorporating some of his father's signature features. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to any skill level but there are some challenges in store as well. Mature trees line most of the fairways and there are a few strategically placed bunkers that come into play. You won't come across much water on this golf course and it's not terribly long either. It's gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. The golf course's signature hole is the par-4 14th, which features the famous Dye railroad ties bordering a lake that hugs the bunkered green. Northwoods G.C. also offers a practice facility with a lighted driving range and putting green.

Ok
It was cheap for the holiday weekend. course was very wet in spots and many of the greens were not the best. Heavy over grown trees in front of three tee boxes wasn't ideal. But overall the course design is great it just needs some TLC.
Great layout, needs maintained
Great layout and this course could really be one of the best around if some money was invested into it, you'd think with the businesses around the course they'd maintain it, it rains every day in Columbia so the greens should look a lot better than they do, the fairways had mounds of cut grass left behind, someone needs to teach them how to cut,
course needs work
Wish price was equal to coarse maintenence. Needs work
Enjoyed the course. The staff was very helpful. Great golf outing
I enjoyed the day at Northwoods. Had some holes that were challenging. Like that a lot. I will be back soon
Could be great, needs some attention
This course is fairly challenging, designed by P.B. Dye, son of design legend Pete Dye. There are some tricky holes and lots of greenside pot bunkers. The course is fairly short, didn't find myself reaching for the long irons very often. Overall a good course, but the ground is a little hard, grass is sparse in certain areas...needs some work.
Nice layout, poorly maintained.
After reading some of the reviews, I thought the course would have been in better shape. It's a shame the course is so banged up because the layout is nice. There are some pretty holes, but the tee boxes are mostly dirt and weeds, fairway grass is higher than most courses, and the greens are scalped in several areas. Every green had many bare spots, most likely from the mower cutting to close and scalping the ground. Fairways and rough has a lot of grass clippings, clumps of dead grass all over the course. I don't typically give bad reviews, but I was disappointed with this course. For me to go back, I need to see some better reviews in the future. It certainly won't be this year. The best thing about the day was it cost me $24 on GolfNow!
This course is great for the weekend golfer. It forces you to hit difficult shots from time to time. Also affordable.
All in all a great course to play. The sand traps need some work and the cart paths need repaved but the value is there.
Despite a week of steady rains, the course was quite playable and hardly any standing water was observed.
The pin locations seemed to be the legal limit near the edges of the greens maybe to simulate the "Open" experience and on more than one occasion we were humbled and frustrated by the slope and speed of the pin spots. An excellent test of my putting game and well worth the money!
Could use some attention...greens were in okay shape, good roll
Fairways were being mowed at the time of play. Lots of grass left over on the fairways and tee boxes. Needs a better groundskeeper, weeds everywhere and the bumpiest cart paths I have ever been on...Course is okay for a quick round in the afternoon. Would not schedule a trip or outing here...Staff was nice and friendly. Will play here again when all other courses are booked...
Overall good course for the value
The course is in pretty decent shape considering it is the middle of the summer in South Carolina, but certain areas of the course need work. The greens could use a little more attention, the bunkers are not in great shape, and the course does not drain very well after rain. Overall, though, the course is a great play for the price.
Fun layout. Condition a bit lacking.
I've always enjoyed the layout of Northwoods. It's a fun course to play. However, the course is not in the same condition that it used to be. And I'm not referring to the greens. There's a lot of growth that just isn't being taken care of. Granted, it's been wet and mowing/cutting has to be done carefully. But it seemed like the bare minimum was being done to keep the course golf-able.
I don't care how rough the cart paths are. Those don't affect your game. But the bunkers are a mess. So are a few marshy areas in front of tees that they just let go. Visually it detracts from the experience. And Northwoods has a lot of character that's hiding behind this lack of attention. It's a very sporty course-- with fun golf holes. I'll be back. Hopefully they can hack down some of the aforementioned overgrowth-- it'll help.
Staff needs a lot of attention
When I came in to the front desk I asked the gentlemen working if the range was open. His reply was " no it's under water you can go ahead and tee off". It was not what he said it was how he said it. Then I was on the course and the course maintenance workers totally disregarded the golfers on the course. They were running the lawn mowers and utility carts while I was teeing off and hitting iron shots! Finally to top off my day a guy rode by in a cart and screamed at me to keep the cart on the path. I would have loved to keep the cart on the cart path but the cart paths were so rough that I kept hitting my head on the cover of the golf cart. The course was in decent shape but not in good enough shape to go back. Too many other courses in town that will at least talk to you like you are someone.
Fun course to play
Overall nice course to play on. Some of the greens have a few rough patches but over all greens are in good shape. Fairways are nice. Traps are still water logged a little but I will play again
good value
If you are a golf snob and looking for a pristine course, then this definitely isnt the course for you. However if you are an average golfer who likes to try different courses and not spend a ton of cash, then this course is definitely worth a try!
Pros:
-its an interesting layout and the back nine has some great holes
-cant beat the price compared to other courses in the area
Cons:
-its not in the best of shapes, some greens are pretty beat up, but the fairways are at least above average just mainly the greens that need work
Fun course, bad greens
Northwoods isn't a bad course. It's pretty easy compared to some other courses in Columbia, the fairways are decent and the layout is cool but the greens need some work. I don't understand why all the courses in Columbia, even the cobblestones, oak hills, and crickentrees don't have good greens. We have the right weather and plenty of rain this year so what's the issue?? New grass maybe? Either way, ill still keep playing northwoods and you should too.
Not just this few weeks
When we got there, we found that the greens were being are rated. Putting on these was horrible. Give me a stroke for every hole!
good deal overall
the greens were being aerated but for $8, who cares. maintenance crew had me skip a hole but I came back around played it before going onto the final hole.
Back 9 is the best part of the track
Played 5/19/13 and for spring time in South Carolina this course is not in good shape at all. Fairways have more weeds than grass. 85% of the greens have lost most of the grass. Cart paths are in desparte need of repair. Only paid $22.00 through Golfnow which was a 33% reduction in cost but would have been very upset if I had paid full price to plaqy.
great layout
I love the layout. 6800+ from the tips. Plenty of holes to birdie as well as some solid challenges, including a 470 yard par 4. If this course could pretty up the fairways and greens, and fix the cart paths, it would be a $100 a round course.
The course was fun to play
The course is laid out well, with several blind tee boxes. The fairways were in great shape, but several greens are needing some attention. To me it looked like they tried to fertilize them and burnt several of them. Also the greens where somewhat on the fast side with it having rained the night before. The cart paths are also in need of some attention, they are in fair to bad condition, if you are walking it would be ok but riding a cart with the 90 degree rule in place makes for a bumpy ride. Over all I will return to see how well the course plays later on this summer. I would like to see if the greens are better after the spring rains.
