Northwoods Golf Course
About
Northwoods Golf Club is one of the Columbia area's premier public courses. P.B. Dye, son of renowned course architect Pete Dye, designed the layout, incorporating some of his father's signature features. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to any skill level but there are some challenges in store as well. Mature trees line most of the fairways and there are a few strategically placed bunkers that come into play. You won't come across much water on this golf course and it's not terribly long either. It's gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. The golf course's signature hole is the par-4 14th, which features the famous Dye railroad ties bordering a lake that hugs the bunkered green. Northwoods G.C. also offers a practice facility with a lighted driving range and putting green.

A little rough in spots
The course is ok it used to be a lot better taken care of. The hazard areas were over grown to the point that the shot was blind cause you couldn't see the fairway that you were trying to reach. The greens were spotty the parts were there was grass was very nice but the were big spots of dead areas on the greens. They have NO drinking water on the course and nobody coming around selling drinks so take your own water/drinks.
needs upkeep
this was not my first time playing the course. each time you would expect some improvements, but the greens are the worst I have played in the Columbia area. the greens are being hand watered which is not working at all. the price that is advertised on golfnow is not worth it. do not pay the price being asked.
Early tee time
I found a $7 on golf now teeing off at 6:45. I was the first one on the course and played in 2 hrs and 20 min. Fareways were in good shape but greens and bunkers were not so good. Bunkers were washed out but that might have been because I was ahead of the grounds crew. Greens had quite a bit burnt out parts so putting for score was nearly impossible.
poor condition
Course has a great layout. Unfortunately the greens are in very poor condition. Sand traps are compacted for the most part.
I Do not reccomend this coarse.
I have been using Golf Now for several years and this is the first time I was disappointed. I paid $22 on line with tax and fees $26, this was supposed to be 48% savings. When I got there it was a municipal coarse and the rate was $20, already paid more than just showing up. The coarse was in the worst shape of any golf coarse I have ever played. Some of the greens were more dirt and sand than grass.
greens poor, fairways not defined
If you live nearby and don't care where you play on that day...then go
Course needs work
Very hard to justify the price of $25 per person. This course has great character, but just hasn't been kept up. The greens were patchy at best, and typically threw up dust from the approach shot. Fairways were green but barely, with very thin grass that makes it very difficult to get a good lie. I was a little taken back when the clerk was telling me "they just aerated the greens, that's why we can offer a discounted rate." Well, let me tell you it wasn't a "discounted rate," especially for the conditions. And for her to tell me that told me all I needed to know.....they have no idea just how bad it is. Which, is more the pity given the great potential. Not trying to run the place down because a little TLC can go a long way but it's just not being taken care of.
Go ahead and shut it down.
The overall course is laid out fun, but the greens are 100% dead. The tee box and fairways aren't too bad but the greens make this place miserable. It's like putting across the mountains watching it bounce and jump to the hole.
Not too great
I played here for the first time yesterday, I was very excited to check it out and go play 18. Once we got there things weren't looking as good as I thought they would. The greens were in terrible conditions, the fairways were ok and the cart paths were absolutely horrible.
Challenging, Fair Layout
I booked a discount afternoon round with the understanding that the greens were being aerated. Just wanting to work on my swing, I played single and really enjoyed the course. When I finished my round, the superintendent (I believe) asked me about my round, apologized for the greens and encouraged me to come back. I really like the layout of this course, elevation changes are unexpected in this particular area and add to the challenge. I didn't three-putt once! I look forward to returning soon.
Horrible Greens
Greens were in very bad condition. Putting turned into all 2-3 putts due to bad green condition. Fairways ok. Overall, a decent practice course, but certainly not anything more.
Northwoods going south
Pros: beautiful course layout. Course is somewhat challenging for intermediate players.
Now the (many!) cons: greens and course were terrible. Greens were basically sand traps spray painted. Trash at each hole was overflowing and coming on to the tee. No water or ball cleaners on course. No food at clubhouse(guy hadn't got back from WalMart yet with the hot dogs-this at noon) and no Sunday beer sales. Wasn't pleased overall.
This is a driving range with a cart
Greens are terrible but the course has potential. Good for practice off the tee and to the green.......
Ugh!
Received a deal on Golfnow for $20 to ride 18, not worth it, greens sanded over, which normally wouldn't be bad, except they left chunks of stuff all over the greens as well. Fairways have bare spots, to where if you hit a good shot you get penalized anyway. Greens were dry and crusty and bumpy, etc. Staff should have given warning prior to paying/playing. Won't go back again.
OUCH!!!! Very disappointing!!!
Course was in terrible condition. Very misleading descriptin of the course when it's describled as a Pete Dye design. It is indeed, but it needs to state the course is in a state of total disrepair. The course courld be beautiful it money was put into it.
Decent course in Columbia
I played my round in the afternoon (12:20pm) after early rain in the morning (~4am) so the course was a bit damp and muddy in some areas. I purchased my round via GolfNow's Hot Deal so for the price, it was great. I think a regular round with cart would have been around 35ish for the weekend which is a bit too high for the condition of the course in my opinion.
For the start of the golf season, the fairways were pretty well maintained from the winter. The greens were a different story however. It may have been due to the rain in the early morning, but some of the greens were pretty bad. It was like the greens must have been all dirt because the majority of the mud my shoes accumulated were from walking on the greens. This was only for 3-4 of the holes though, the others did have some of these random mud patches, but the rest were pretty well maintained.
Challenge wise this course had a little bit of everything. A lot of nice elevation changes, challenging bunker placement, lakes and creeks to tend with, and interesting greens that requires you to take a second read.
This course has a lot of potential, some of the holes were pretty memorable for me, especially #14 in which you needed to clear a lake (~150-200yds) then pop it over a hill surrounded by sand traps on both sides; or it tempts you to bomb it ~250yds from tee to green across the lake. Just one of a few fun holes on the course.
Some random notes about the course. They do not accept card charges under $15. Also, my golf cart's brake was damaged or broken about 3 holes into the course. It seemed to only work about 10% of the time so I had to find flat areas to stop it and pray it didn't roll.
All in all, I'll definitely be coming back later this season, hopefully the course's conditions will be better with the nicer weather and golf season in full swing.
Some notes with my ratings, the pace of play was only that long due to a single ahead of me that was having a tough time; I declined to pass him though to enjoy the nice weather and work on my chipping while I waited. I was able to knock out the first 4 holes in about 40 minutes before I caught up with him so the pace of play could have been better. Also, I didn't have any of their food so I just marked it as average. There are no water coolers along the course though, so be sure to purchase some at the club house before going out.
Solid Course
Bermuda is still coming up - but the greens were as good as they've ever been.
fun, challenging course, friendly staff
First visit and I'll definitely return when I'm in the area. Practically nobody there since it was low 50s and threatening rain all day. Played solo in 3 hours. The course has some serious drainage issues and there were large puddles of standing water on about 6 holes. Aside from that it was a great day. Fun layout and challenging but fair. The staff was fantastic. Sent me out 30min early so I could go ahead of two foursomes and even got a lift to my car after my round so I wouldn't have to return the cart myself. Can't wait to play it again in dryer conditions. Great course and great value.
Not bad
I enjoyed playing, but the course conditions weren't great. There was mud on a few greens, and a good amount of bunkers had rock hard sand in them. My golf cart died about as far away from the clubhouse as it could, but started working after 5 minutes of messing around with it. There were a few beautiful holes which played very well. The course has great potential with some TLC.
Disappointing
Played here several years ago and enjoyed the course and the staff a lot. It wasn't in the best shape then and is in worse condition now. The greens are horrible and the tee boxes are shameful. I am saddened to have to write this honest review but we would not have played there if we knew of the condition. It has excellent potential and is a nice, challenging layout.
