Oak Hills Golf Club

About
Oak Hills Golf Club sits near the state capital but it doesn't feel like it's located in a city. It has a peaceful and picturesque setting. The golf course rolls across gentle hills studded with oaks, pines, and beautiful dogwoods. Some of the greens are rather undulating and a few are elevated as well. Most holes are framed by trees or water. There are some challenging holes but the layout doesn't present anything too intimidating for beginners. The golf course finishes with one of its most memorable holes. From the elevated tee on this par 5, golfers will get a panoramic view of nine different holes.

Horrible Greens
What a disappointment playing this course today. This course redid their greens a few years ago so I expected the greens to be good. I was shocked. These greens are horrible. Some are just ok while others have many areas throughout the green that are missing grass and cause the ball to jump all over the place. These conditions are not the cause of aeration. They plan on doing that in June. The pro shop should inform golfers these conditions before collecting the $42.00 to play here. $42.00 is pretty steep for these kind of conditions. Hopefully they can turn these greens around but I for one will not be back until then.
Excellent shape
From tee to green, Oakhills was in the best shape I can remember. The clubhouse attendant was personable and efficient. The young cart attendant was warm and engaging. Something pretty rare at golf courses. Pace of play was ideal and the greens were in super condition. My only complaint is the condition of the cart paths. However, it’s a minor issue the did not effect my rating. Drive slow. Kudos to everyone there.
Cold and Wet
I went out as early as I could manage to pull myself out of bed. The 8:27 am tee time was very cold and invited a little sprinkle of rain from time to time. However, because of the undesirable conditions, I was the first off and essentially had the course to myself. Because of the cold, I didn't play from the tips, but probably could have and been fine since it's a shorter course. The course was wet due to recent rains, but that also made the greens very receptive. I had to lift-clean-place for each approach shot due to water and mud, but it was okay because I was not in a rush. Tee boxes were a little soggy and matted down from player traffic. Fairways were okay for the winter, but were wet in the low areas, which showed on my left pant leg at the end of the round! Greens were quick for being wet, but very receptive as I stated earlier; so birdies could be made.
Make sure and take an extra club (or two) if you play out there this time of year. With the "cold" weather and mostly uphill approach shots, you will come up short if you're not accounting for the extra 10-20 yards of environmental conditions.
Love This Place
I absolutely love this golf course. I play there between 10-15 times, per year. Only caveats would be that the pace of play can be a little slow because they don’t always have a starter to police pace, and the greens get a little bumpy in the winter.
Definitely worth your time and money.
Oak Hills
Little cold outside but great day playing at Oak Hills Golf Course. First timing playing there. Really enjoyed the course. Will be playing there again.
Worth the price
The course overall is in really good shape. The greens rolled true and fast and the fairways were soft. The cart paths really need attention, which forces you to drive on the grass more or get beat to death. Some really challenging holes and even the easier ones really make you think about club selection. Love this course!
Excellent course, level headed prices
Absolutely the course to play in Columbia. The prices are consistent and they will group max 4 together. 4, 7 and 11,18 are a challenge for the best golfers too. Greens are well maintained. Fairways are in good condition although the management is a bit lazy in putting barricades at points to make the fairways even more lush on the edges.
Nice and challenging
We needed a place to place while visiting Columbia for a few days. This was a very nice course. While it was dry in spots, following the hot hot summer, the greens were in excellent condition. The fairways were well groomed. It has a few “easy” holes but plenty of challenges for golfers. It’s a bit rocky and washed out along the fairways but it just encourages you to hit it straight. We’d go again.
Nice course in Midlands with good price
Great course, it’s got hills and lots of elevated greens and rolling fairways
Very good value for the price paid
You will get a workout so bring comfortable shoes
Greens and fairways are in pretty good shape based on the heat at this time of year
After or during your round you’ll find a full service grill with great burgers and dogs and other selections
Will definitely play again next time I’m in town
Slow, Slow, Slow.
This is a good ole boy, bring your cooler kinda course. Won’t play again.
Good Shape. Terrible Pace.
The course was in good shape from tees to fairway to greens. Greens had likely been punched 3-4 weeks ago and were still somewhat slow and bumpy in spots. Edges of rough were dirt and rock in spots, and cart paths were terrible. However, all of this could have been overlooked. But, pace of play was awful. 5 hours 15 minutes. No starter, no marshals. Started 10min late, let groups in front of us take forever and pro shop did not even say anything to them after several attempts to inform them of slow play. This alone did not make it worth the $40 green fee, so will likely not be coming back. Overall, good course, but be aware of time you play and possible lack of control for slow play.
Good Shape
Oak Hills is in good summer shape fairways and greens. Great value for the price.
Best in YEARS
Today's round at Oak Hills was great, albeit VERY hot. This is absolutely the best this course has looked in years. The tee boxes were cut very short and so were the fairways. I believe there was some kind of amateur tourney there today and that may have been part of it. Even with the extremely hot, dry weather we have had, the entire course is VERY green. The greens are still coming around, but they were receptive, if just a little slow. They have obviously been verticut and aerated in the past several weeks and are really improving. I would highly recommend a round here soon!
Always in great shape
This is one of the best courses in the midlands.. my favorite course!! Always in great shape even though greens were a bit fast.
