Decent Course
The clubhouse is under renovation and once completed looks to be very nice. Enjoyed the views and the elevation changes. Par 3's were challenging...major elevation changes. Overall the course was in average condition. The fairways were a little rough but the greens were in good shape. The views were spectacular, especially if lake travis lake level was full. I would play here again.
Nice
This course was in really nice condition. Beautiful scenery. Will play again soon.
shhhhhhh. It's our secret
Absolutely beautiful course! Clubhouse is under renovation. May look closed but definitely not. Course is IN GREAT shape. Will be back. Like tomorrow.
Great start to a work week
Although the clubhouse is temporarily housed in a portable building, it had no effect on our golfing experience. The course was in fantastic condition and our afternoon was very enjoyable. Aside from a few blind shots (due to unfamiliarity with the layout), the course was straightforward and challenging, but fair. Will definitely return soon!
Fallen from grace
Played this course 15 years ago when it was somewhat of an upscale course. The condition of the course and the neighborhood within which it is tucked have both suffered.
It's still fun to play with lots of elevation change and nice views of what used to be beautiful Lake Travis (now down about 40 or 50 feet). The greens are small with some severe pitch on a few.
We were about the only golfers out so we played in 4 hours on a course where we lacked familiarity.
For me, Highland Lakes rates like an average muni in the Austin area.
Best views in central texas
I've played at least 6 different courses since the middle of March, and this course was by far in the best shape, the fairways were green and the greens were both soft and true
Great Staff
Sam, was fantastic. They have $2.00 beer for those interested.
You can't just play this course one time just like you can't eat one potatoe chip! Awesome!
Invited my brothers & a friend to play. All 3 came back for more punishment!!
definetly needs work
Played this course as 2nd part of 2 course deal with Lago Vista gc. This course is diamond in the rough, Definetly rough right now. Needs a lot of work. Hopefully after they finish remodel on restaurant/clubhouse they turn attention to the course. all 4 of us felt this course has the Potential to as good as some high dollar courses in the Austin area. But very neglected right now.
Great Value
This course is pretty nice. Short course with some unique and challenging holes. For $20, you can't beat it. It is about 45min out of Austin. HL only charges cart fee for the second 18. Good spot for a 36 hole day!
A work in Progress
We have played this course since the 70s & have seen lots of changes.-even a complete closing. However, the clubhouse has been purchased & is in the process of complete re-do (lots of workmen around). But--the course was beautiful! especially the greens. A very hilly course but fun to play & beautiful vistas. We enjoyed it & will return.
Good value, great scenery.
Course is hilly. Some holes have deep rough and houses reachable with errant drives. Sloping greens made for a few 3 putts. Hit a lot of sand wedge approach shots as drives roll far on the down slopes.
Only had to wait on a few holes as play was fast. Great scenery with hills, trees, and changes of elevation. You probably won't shoot one of your best scores here, and will lose a couple of balls, but it is a fun course to play. A good value for the price.
surprizing
decent fairways for this time of the year, excellent greens.
Revamp at Highlands
They are finally investing in upgrades. The former clubhouse is undergoing renovation. The course itself is also being modified - withe front and back nine's being swapped. Overall its a great value. Difficulty is created by blind paths where you lose well hit balls just because there is no line-of-sight to the destination. Bunkers seemed placed perfectly to trap you at every chance too !!
Great deal for the price
Its way out there and always empty but for the price and the great people out there its worth every penny. Course isn't the best by any means but it isn't terrible. If you like to play different courses put this one in your rotation for good deals.
Autin
The green were very good for this time of year. We played other courses and these were giving us a true roll.
The course is narrow
Enjoyed the challenge
The staff is very friendly
19th hole under renovation
White tail deer on almost every hole
Greens in very good shape
A lost jewel-High Lake Golf Course
Beautiful course, good value. If the course can be maintained a bit better, it would be a paradise for a golfer in Austin, Tx. Lots of blind shot keep me excited about the play. Pace of play needs to keep up a bit. It should be a five star resort type golf course. I will definitely come back even if I would have to drive 60 miles from my home.
A Hidden Gem!
Playing a course for the first time is always an adventure, as you never know exactly what to expect. When you don't know anyone that has played it before, and are going by reviews and the descriptions on a website, you can still get burned. This was not the case with Highland Lakes! When you first pull into the parking lot, you're a little nervous, as the clubhouse is in a mixed state of renovation. You have to walk around the back to the "snack shack" which is currently serving as the "pro shop" in order to check in. The gentleman working was very friendly, and cheerfully checked our group in. We loaded up our carts, and headed to the first tee, and one of our greatest golfing adventures!
This course is amazing! The terrain gives you a constant variety of blind, downhill tee shots, tricky uphill tee shots, creative bunkering, and fast, but true greens! The scenic views are absolutely beautiful, and you'll loose count of all of the deer you'll see! From my home, it's 70 miles each way, but it was worth every mile, and my group and I will be back, not only to play Highland Lakes again, but to also play it's sister course, Lago Vista.
If you're in the area, you owe it to yourself to play this coures. If you're not in the area, it's worth the trip. I do, however, recommend having a harty meal before you arrive, as the "snack shack" has a limited selection.
Don't judge by first appearances, wonderful course
It was tough to find (GPS didn't like it) and when we pulled up it looked like a Ghost town. Pro Shop under construction ( but from the looks of it, it had been for a long time), and a guy greeted us at the window. We were starving so we ordered a sausage wrap and he microwaved it for us. Our expectations were starting to sink...then we walked to the first hole and from then on were thrilled with the course. Beautiful, well maintained. The weather was great and the leaves were turning. We were pretty much alone on the course and had a great time. Being that we got it for $10 per person on GolfNow, it was our best experience for the money yet.
