Beautiful and challenging course, lacking on amenities
Highland Lakes is a great course set in the hill country near Lake Travis, about half an hour from Austin. The course features great scenery, lots of wildlife, and plenty of hills which make for some challenging holes. Highland Lakes is one of the best values around as it is one of the few courses you can play for usually under thirty dollars (My father and I played yesterday for $12.99 each with Golfnow booking). The course condition is decent, better than you would expect for the price. Highland Lakes does leave something to be desired in its facilities however. Although there is a small putting green, there is no driving range to warm up on. Also, there is a big clubhouse, which at one time was quite nice, but now seems to be abandoned. The pro shop is out back of the clubhouse in a small shack and it offers drinks, snacks, and minimal equipment. I did not see a grill and on the course I did not see a drink cart. Facilities aside, Highland Lakes is still a great value and worth checking out.
Potential
Great potential, greens area are very nice but tee and fairway need help. Views are spectacular and you can see the potential that can be at this club, money and members are lacking.
The course was tricky
If you have never played the course it is difficult to figure out where to hit off several of the tee boxes. There were several holes that are completely blind and even when I thought I hit a great shot off the T I would go over the hill and find I had completely hit the ball in the wrong direction.
The course was in decent shape and was fun to play when I could see the flag, lots of elevation. I really liked the 10th hole!
Fun, casual course
I've played at this course multiple times over the summer (along with neighboring Lago Vista) and I really enjoy it. No crowds, greens and fairways in good condition (especially after a very hot/dry summer). Great scenery and wildlife to boot.
The facility is limping along on what appears to be a small budget, but the course itsef is a great value. You certainly don't get the country club vibe here, but if you just are looking for a fun course... Highland Lakes (and Lago Vista) beats the pants off the other Austin muni's. No cart girls, though, so you'll want to get your beverages and snacks at the turn. .
not quite up to par
having played lago vista several times i wanted to try highland lakes. the layout is very nice, but it's obvious they are not running at full speed yet.
the course needs some attention, but is still very playable. great views.
downside is there is no clubhouse to speak of so it's not the most welcoming place. but if you are looking for a place to play where you can relax and not be bothered or like to play fast, this is your place. and the prices are great which goes a long way towards covering the other shortcomings.
This course is challenging and fun!
I played this course at 2:45 pm on a Saturday in 104 degree heat so it was pretty much vacant which I liked. Don't get me wrong as they are usually packed up until about noon on the weekends but with the heat it drops off. This course is always challenging to me which is one of the reasons I like playing there. The greens were in great shape and fast as usual. There were a few brown spots in the fairway but again it had been at or over a hundred for several months so I expected it. This is a real hidden gem that is challenging and playable for a great price. Staff is friendly and the pace of play is usually pretty fast.
Great value. Uou will have to take shots from different elevations. This course will make you a better player !
I have Y there 3 times during the last 2 months. There are lots of shots from hills to flats and vice versa. You get to ay away from multitudes. You dont have to have long drives. Just accurate ones. 3 wood. Omes handy. Great Views!
Ready for some elevation changes?
This course in the Lago Vista area has a few holes that'll challenge you with elevation changes and shot selection. It can take a little time to drive down to this area of the lake, but I certainly enjoy the change in scenery -- especially if you've been playing a few too many links style courses. Watch out for Bambi -- the deer are everywhere.
