GETTING BETTER, BUT SAND TRAPS ARE MOSTLY DIRT!
We first played this course when it was privately owned after the Highland Lakes Resort went bankrupt. The course was pretty and challenging, but not well maintained. It was eerie going through the abandoned country club building to find bathrooms.
Since then, the City of Lago Vista has taken it over. Returned for the first time in three years on Sunday and the course was in better shape, except for the sand traps, which were mostly dirt.
The country club building has not been renovated. It is boarded up, but still in use because the cart shed is below it, but at least you don't have to go in it for the bathroom.
If you want to play a pretty course that is challenging and not have to worry about crowds, this is the place and the price definitely is right.
Course in poor shape. No clubhouse.
Horrible course. Clubhouse was dilapidated and shut down. Staff was rude. Course was in poor condition. Fairways was not cut and full of weeds. Not worth the $35 value. Had 2 people from out of town and that was their golf experience.
Disappointed that golf now has this course listed without any warnings.
This course is not maintained at all.
Very disappointing. Lago Vista course is in MUCH better shape and is right next door, yet Highland Lakes is trying to charge the same price. Would not recommend this course right now. Will not play again until they make an attempt at course maintenance.
great hill country layout
Golf course is up and down with interesting hill country views. The hilly terrain offers some challenging shots. The course is very tight so accurate shot making is essential. The course needs maintenance but the greens are outstanding. Some rain in the hill country would go a long way to upgrading the condition of the course.
Excellent course.
Staff works hard to maintain this course, however the golfers don't work hard enough to repair their ball marks on the greens.
Challenging Course
Great course. The ever changing topography will keep a golfer on their toes. The greens have varied grade, slope and undulation providing a unique putting challenge on nearly every hole. The greens need a little attention as they are pock marked, dry and very hard. That will not keep me from returning though. I look forward to the next time I play Highland Lakes in Lago Vista.
it took us 6 hours to play 15 holes. The course is horrible!
Staff.... horrible, course horribile, play was as slow as I have ever played. They, the course, let groups of 8 go out together. Hated every minute of it. The buildings look like bombed out bunkers !
Challenging
Good layout. Some tight fairways. Several blind shots, especially going for the green. Not enough grass in rough to stop balls from bouncing in trouble. Bring more balls unless you're a scratch player. If it's the first time here, better play with people with local knowledge. Green are OK but tees and fairways need more maintenance but for the money, can't complain.
Dont judge the course by the clubhouse situation
I was pretty surprised tro seen the condition of what was left of the clubhouse. Only 1 other group at the course when our group arrived. Suprisingly the course was in better shape than I anticipated based on the conditon at the clubhouse. Greens were fast. Views are great. Definitely not what I expected but the course can be fun. Little in the way of snacks and drinks at the turn. Price was fair and we were able to set our own place of play.
Surprise conditions.
I was surprised at the good condition of the course because of the draught that has plagued TX for several years. The greens were especially good. And being from Iowa, I did enjoy your little deer on the course.
Really enjoy this course.
Need to play more than once, Some placement shots. Great views.
I liked it
Green were in good condition but a bit unfair and pin placement didn't help. I liked the course and the condition and look forward to playing it real soon
Greens and views were nice
Greens were fast and true. Made many clutch putts but also went past hole when on the wrong side of the flagstick. Would be nice if the scorecard could reflect the greens undulation. Played on a cold day, so I had the course for myself. Staff was very friendly and the tamales and the clubhouse were great and priced right.
Good Value
Even though it inhabits a shack in what once was a clubhouse, the overall course can be a good experience. It is well maintained and pretty well laid out. Lots of hills country/lake views and a ton of deer. If you want amenities this isn' t place for you. If you just want some good golf at a cheap price, this is for you!
Better courses available for same price.
This is an "OK" course to play but there are others that are in better shape for the same price.
Find out how good you are.
Great old course that will test anyones skills, rairly busy, excelent price
This course is generally not busy.
The greens and fairways are in excellent condition. The golf carts are in very good condition. Because the course isn't real busy it is easy to get a tee time.
Beautiful view. Quiet and not so busy
Highland Lakes offers very scenic view of Lake Travis with lots of hills. Some hoes are quite challenging - even unfairly challenging, but overall you will be able to score your average here. There is no driving range. No big deal to me, but maybe an issue to others. Powerful late model electric cart which is surprising, as I thought with all the hills, they would have gas carts. One of my favorite courses, as often times I play alone with no one in front or behind me for the entire 18 holes, especially after 2:00PM. I love that.
Nice vertical elevations, great views of Texas Hill Country and Lake Travis.
Above average conditions for public courses in the area. Bunker sand is very coarse, but fairways are good and greens are very good. Distance is not an issue, with very few forced carries. Views of Texas Hill Country and Lake Travis are outstanding - the most scenic course in the Austin area. Great value for money.
Great Layout, but needs maintenance
Highland Lakes is a challenging golf course with a lot of unique holes. You will not find better views of the hill country or Lake Travis anywhere. It is still suffering from being shut down for a few years. While I am glad that the city of Lago Vista bought the course and opened it back up, I would like to see them bring it back to what it used to be. Lago Vista needs to demolish the old club house and spend some money on maintenance. Greens are really in pretty good shape, but the fairways need better care. There are plenty of bunkers, but many of them are in bad shape. It is ashame to see this course in this condition.
At first glance, the course looks easy. The layout appears innocuous. Then it gets you! This is a difficult, beautiful and peaceful place. There are homes all along the course; however, most aren't in play! The clubhouse is a separate piece of property that the City was not able to buy when they purchased the course. The previous owner let it flood and then shut the course down while performing no maintenance, remediation or damage mitigation at all. The course is coming back to its previous greatness. Be patient with her, she is a gem!
