The Hollows Golf Club - Lake/Road
About
Hollows Golf Club is situated in historic Hanover County, birthplace of Patrick Henry. The club boasts 27 holes of championship golf that are considered the best value in the area since the greens fess are good for the whole day, allowing you to try every hole if you wanted to. The holes are divided into three nines: Cottage, Lake, and Road, that are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The unique layouts of all three offer enough variety to appeal to players of all skill levels. The Lake/Road combination naturally features plenty of water on the front nine. The Lake nine is routed around a large lake as well as a few small ponds. The back nine, Road, is the longest of the three nines, but only by about 100 yards. There is no water but there are some tricky doglegs and strategically placed bunkers.

A course in the country
We are visiting Richmond and I was going to play alone so I was looking for a bargain. For about $25 I reserved a cart and 18 holes on two od the 9-hole courses. I ended up playing alone and finished the first nine in a little over an hour; i finally caught up with a twosome with four holes to go on the back nine and they let me play theough so 18 holes in a little over 2 hrs and 10 min. Bermuda fairways were tough for wedge shots as there was not much grass under the ball, and bunkers were fiar. A good public course but a let down after driving 20 miles and passing a lot of courses that looked very nice and probably cost a lot more. It was better than sitting home for the day though and still time left to get things done!
Best condition I've ever seen this course in!
Tee boxes, fairways, and greens are in the best shape I've ever seen.
Great course to relax and hit away
Played numerous times now , one of my golf partners favorite courses. Can be short but back up to the blues and have at it . Greens hold very well , run very true. With the lack of a hazard and with the trees lining fairways , usually you can find and play an errant tee shot so great place to pick your tee box to match your length and have at it. The staff is very accomadating and add to the whole great environment. Road course open, cottage tighter and short ,but the lakes personality our favorite . Great value and worth the drive.
Very Pleaseant Course. Not to difficult but too easy,
I got a chance to play this course because of my kids. Drop kids off at Kings Dominion and I went on to The Hollows, which is about 17 mins. As soon as I arrived, Impressed with Course view. It's not by the water but really good layout and you not playing between houses!, Staffs are very very nice, super cool, gave me all the info I need as this is my very first time playing.
The Tee box is better than fair, so in good conditions, as you hit the ball, the fair is in good condition [dont compare to $100 green fee course, but among $20-$60 courses, this is nice].
Now the GREEN, it is in very very nice. When I make GW shot from 110, I can see it gets down and sit pretty quick and sometimes gets back spin. Putt pretty fast, about 10 or 11 speed. Over all, it was fun and enjoyed it very much.
NOTE,: Fairway is not too tight but not wide and trees along the way. Good news is not very much hazard or OB, so you can try to hit long and still able to recover. [Especially for me, I had not much idea where I was going as they have 3 different 9 holes but tons of fun!]
Practice
Good course for the poor/avg or good golfer. For the good/great golfer its a good place to practice.
Chris
Good course. Nice fairways and greens. Staff was excellent
A Golf Haven
Simply AWESOME that there are 3 - 9 hole courses to choose from allowing all skill level golfers the oppurtunity to challenge themselves.
Friendly course and solid value
First time I've played The Hallows, the staff was super laid back and the course was in solid condition. Nothing was spectacularly nice but that's not what this place is. It's a large 27 hole facility that competes on value. You will not find a better non-hot deal value in Richmond the 18 holes includes an addition 9 if you want to play it at $39 It gets my vote.
People make a difference
For the everyday player , senior or beginner great venue for golf. Three 9 hole layouts with a different personality ,gives golfers choice . Greens and tees excellent , but fairways still need a little work. Traps soft and fluffy . Now have played 4 or 5 times and can't wait to go back. Intermediate golfers will love the length and an errant tee shot usually still playable. The staff are friendly helpful and add to the overall experience. From the pro shop to starter to 19th hole all very accommodating . A great overall atmosphere for a very enjoyable day . People do make a difference.
Good Coarse
Overall nice coarse to play. The 3 nine hole coarse can get confusing if you are not careful. Coarse was in very good shape.
Variety
With three nines get to choose . They are recommending road and lakes but never have played cottage so played there and lakes. Cottage has not caught up as quick in condition. Fairways and greens still working on getting back from winter so would play other two for a few more weeks. Cottage is the tightest of the three and to me seemed to be shorter, so think I actually prefer road course for me. Do see a lot of singles and walkers out here as well . Would be great course to walk and we even talked walking next time out . For our skill level good challenge . Not long and most threes in 150 range and par fours of middle 320-380 so perfect for intermediate golfer . Layout allows for play even with errant tee shot. Enjoyable day and do like the personality difference of the three . Pace is great and in some cases you choose. We played cottage first stopped to eat sandwich in cart and watched activity on all three first tee boxes . Wondering where do we go. Not busy so had pick . Easy to get to and not far from west end so will be playing often this year.
Great course.......Friendly staff
This is a great course, this was about my 5th time playing and theres always new challenges, the lake course is amazing. Its called the Lake course for a reason though! Be prepared for water!
Windy but nice course
interesting course for the intermediate golfer. With three courses offers a good variety. Played the road course which I am told is the easiest and yes moderate challenge . Some spots still repairing from winter, cottage course was closed when began round, but overall good condition.greens ran very true and consistent, so putting or chipping fun. Even holed pitch out of sand that ran very true. Lakes course then gives you whole different look with the water and blind tee shots . One hole has cow bell so can ring and let the golfers on the tee know you have moved on. Windy and cooler than forecasted, but overall like the variety of holes and plan on playing again. Want to play the cottage because understand the most challenging of the three . Definitely will be playing again soon.
great place to be.
From a few days out from the melting of our third snow since february, the course was pretty soggy but there is no question that warmer, dryer weather will prove what a hidden jewel The Hollows is. The Hoolows is one of my favorite courses in tne Richmond area.
Hidden gem
I played this in 38-40 degree weather and cloudy. Hardly ideal golf conditions. Honestly, I bought the tee time forgetting the weather forecast for the following day and being nonrefundable, I went for it. I was not disappointed. Most of the courses in this area are going into dormancy and so the greens are green but the fairways are generally not. Still, a great course, greens were fantastic, and fast. Just like they should be IMO. Many are little dots and many are huge. Their one common characteristic is none of them are flat, and I love to putt so it made for great fun. Even though we are middle/late December, the fairways were in great shape.
I will be back to play this in the summer when it should be in premium condition.
Worth the drive, worth the cost, and certainly a challenging course.
nice course w/ 3- 9 holes / usually can get on
usuall go as a single, but meet nice golfers to play with.
Course has great greens
Fairways & greens in excellent shape. Greens are super & fast.
Great value
The course is in very good condition. Nice touch to have the fairways overseeded for the winter. Course has 3 nines and each are different from each other.
