The Hollows Golf Club - Lake/Road
About
Hollows Golf Club is situated in historic Hanover County, birthplace of Patrick Henry. The club boasts 27 holes of championship golf that are considered the best value in the area since the greens fess are good for the whole day, allowing you to try every hole if you wanted to. The holes are divided into three nines: Cottage, Lake, and Road, that are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The unique layouts of all three offer enough variety to appeal to players of all skill levels. The Lake/Road combination naturally features plenty of water on the front nine. The Lake nine is routed around a large lake as well as a few small ponds. The back nine, Road, is the longest of the three nines, but only by about 100 yards. There is no water but there are some tricky doglegs and strategically placed bunkers.

Spring get out and play!
27 holes here, played the Lake and the Cottage. Lake more difficult, with a lot of water, however, not real long. This appears to be a nice neighborhood course to go out and have some fun with friends or family. Don't know what it will be like when it greens up? Worth the $21 I paid but not more. Kind of off the beaten path a little. Greens had been aireated so they were somewhat bumpy and were left fuzzy, I guess to help with the sanding afterwards? Go out and try it, pace of play was good and the staff were nice.
Course requires significant maintenance. I'd suggest going elsewhere.
I played at The Hollows several times in 2011 and 2012. I had enjoyed playing there. Yesterday's outing disappointed me and I am reluctant to play there again. The greens had been aerated earlier this spring and were bumpy. The fairways were sparse in places. The first cut was laden with clover and dandelions making it difficult to find golf balls slightly off the fairway. The sand traps were hard packed. The only positive was that the course was empty. Perhaps others had similar experiences and haven't returned.
Short and in need of fairway maintenance, but well worth the price.
I got a screaming deal through GolfNow and would happily play this course again for the $20 I spent. That said, this course is very short (280 yard Par4s ?) without too much to challenge the average golfer.
Greens were in good shape but the fairways could use some attention.
Nice Fairways
cottage and lake were very nice. Greens needed rolled.
Beautiful place to play
The course is beautifully kept and is fairly easy to play.
Great Place to Get a Round In
Played this course on Monday 4/8/13 fairways are in good shape. Greens still have sand from recent aerating but didn't seem to effect putting. Course has been worked on over the winter and the efforts are starting to payoff. Not a hard course but there are challenges along the way. Great value on GolfNow.
Good Conditions
For the time of year and recent rain/snow this course was in really good shape. Great staff as usual.
Course is great for seniors
The course is in good shape considering the snow, rain, and we are only coming out of winter. Play it several times a year and the staff is friendly.
good greens,friendly,great par 3's
27 holes - Good greens for winter play- par threes are good holes
Can't beat the deal!!!
Great deal, great weather, wet course but nice to get out and play.
This course is tight. Accuracy over distance.
Very tight course. I am sure once all the trees are in full bloom it is even tighter. Focus on accuracy over distance. Course is not long. Some of the sand traps had huge trees right in the middle of the trap. Nice effect if you are not behind one. Small to medium greens, but they run quick and no flat spots anywhere. Ball location is key. Looks like the course does not drain real well after the rains. Some great holes and today I played using GolfNow for $14.00.
Fun course but you might want to leave the rules of golf at home.
We played the "Road" and "Cottage" 9's and I have played the "Lake" 9 in the past. All three are an absolutely great value for the money...especially with the help of GolfNow. Pace of play was a bit slow. There was a group of 4 in front of us that was holding up play, my group was 3 strong and never invited to play through. The group behind us was a 2some that spent most of their day hitting into us (obviously not realizing that my group had nowhere to go and neither would they if we let them play through). Saw the marshall a few times and looked almost like he was giving us "the eye" like we were the ones causing the traffic-jam. I also played poorly so I might just be looking for something to blame. As for the course itself...it is narrow (especially the "Cottage" 9) and the greens aren't particularly large for the most part. That being said, accuracy and not distance is key at getting around this course. The reason I say to leave the rules of golf at home, is because the fairways are a bit uneven and often times a perfect drive in the fairway would wind up with a pretty horrible lie (divots and uneven grass). For this reason, I'd recommend playing rules that allow you to roll your ball in the fairway (within a club-length but not closer to the hole). This will give you much better chances at hitting those small greens, and if it's established as a rule at the beginning of the round it won't feel as much like cheating... The golf-carts have a g.p.s. feature (with a readout on the back of the cart right above your bag!) which is incredibly convenient. The screen above the passenger's seat shows the layout of the hole as well as the distance to the flag. Other than the slow play and the horrible lies I was ending up with...it was golf and golf is awesome. What's more awesome than golf?? Cheaper golf. Thanks GolfNow.
love the hollows
great staff, well maintained course, great value.... this is the "GO TO" course for all around fun, and value.
Great Value for the money
Course was well maintained and pretty open but challenging. Got a great price on GolfNow which always helps. I cant wait to play it again.
Great value! Good condition.
We received a great deal from www.golfnow.com, saving 55%. Our tee Time was at 12:32 PM on a Friday. The speed of play was good and we finished in 3.5 hours playing the Cottages and Lakes courses. Everyone at The Hollows was friendly. We used a golf cart with a range finder so it made getting the correct distance to the pin much easier and quicker. The green, fairways and tee boxes are also in good shape.
Nice course with 3 nines
I have played this course many times and find it fairly challenging, especially from the back tees. Some of the par 3s and a couple of the par 4s are long and not easy. It is a good mix of holes and you can use a mix of clubs off the tee and in the fairway. The greens are normally in great shape and harder to putt than they look. The greens at certain times are extremely fast. The practice facility is OK. The restaurant and bar are nice and the food is very good and reasonably priced. Good daily specials.
Fun course
Fun course 27 holes easy to moderate layout. Greens a bit slow but true. Will play again
Great value, fun holes on Cottage
The Hollows is a great value; they have 3 nines, which gives it enough variety to stay interesting, and the rates are very reasonable.
We played the Cottage and Road nines. Cottage has some pretty holes, especially the 3rd hole, par 3 150 over a pond. From there, there's some elevation changes on the next couple holes to keep it interesting.
Road is a bit more boring, scenery wise; not terrible, but just not a lot of visual interest.
Both are pretty forgiving for high handicappers (like us :)); fairways are generous, not a lot of OB.
The greens were in nice shape, for the most part; they rolled true. There were a few rough spots, but for the most part I was impressed.
I always enjoy playing the Hollows, will definitely come back!
This course was outstanding
