South Riding Golf Club
About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

Great course. Very tough.
2nd time i have played it. Greens are demanding. Lots of slope and undulations.
Well Maintained Course
This course has some nice features. The carts come equiped with distance measuring equipment and also provided college football scores. In addition you can order food as you get to the 9th hole, so its ready when you make the turn.
The course itself is very well maintained. Greens were very fast. Fairways were for the most part wide enough to be forgiving and made for keeping the ball in play reasonably easy. Nice for the occasional player who typically shoots in the 95-100 range. May not be challenging enough for stronger players, although playing from the gold tees makes it a very very long course.
Finished about 5:30 and wanted to have a beer but the clubhouse was closed.....otherwise enjoyed the day.
Course is in great shape and found a $65 deal on a Sunday morning
Found a $65 deal on Golfnow.com and was a little worried the course might have some aeration or other maintenance going on, but that was not the case. The course offers relatively generous fairways for the most part and most of the greens are quite large, so you can find yourself with some substantially long putts even though you G.I.R. count might be up. The course was in great shape, fairways were full and firm, greens rolled true and fast enough to make you pay close attention when you were putting downhill, some areas in the rough were a bit on the dry side, but hey, it is the rough, you get whatever you get for not hitting it where you are supposed to hit it. A couple of the bunkers were a little rough, but again, what are we doing in there in the first place, I think the PGA should make their bunkers much less friendly so the guys are actually penalized for hitting into them. Chad in the pro shop was very friendly and helpful, the starter got us out right on time and we played in just a bit over 4 hours on a weekend morning. What more could you ask for.
Beautiful course. Very challenging.
Our foursome had a great experience. Staff was fantastic. We teed off on time, on-course cart service was convenient, and clubhouse was good.
Wide fairways, large but challenging greens.
This is an enjoyable course with spacious well-maintained fairways. Greens are generous in size but have some undulation & were fast when we played. There are very challenging pin placement options on most holes. Though not a fault of the course, thoughtless players had left a number of ball marks. The holes are well designed, however there is often a long drive from green-to-tee so this is not a course to walk. A real plus - carts are equipped with a GPS system which provides plentiful yardage references. Course could use a few more directional signs. Biggest negative -- the sand traps. Nearly all are too thinly sanded & unworthy of the course & green fees.
well-maintained course, nice course to play.
Nice course is well-maintained. The green is very nice.
Practice range slightly tilted. Marshalls not friendly.
I stopped by the practice range before my tee time. I found it slightly tilted up, so I did not spend as much time as I wanted. In addition, there was too much pressure from the Marshalls to keep the pace going, although we were playing at a moderate speed. Just because there is a single player or 2-some, they shouldn't move up before my time. Isn't that the whole purpose of tee time?
Great layout and value.
Overall experience was very good with the exception of poor drainage on the course. There were downpours the night before but it was sunny when we played and parts of the course were still completely soaked at 11am (we tee'd off at 7:40am). The greens were well-drained but had been aerated a week or two before so many putts did not roll true. I would defintely play there again though based on price, layout and pace of play.
South Riding GC
Very reasonable cost for a Saturday morning.Fairways and greens were in great shape. Sand traps need sand though.
Right up the "Golf Now" alley!
This course and the Golf Now program are a great match! This is one instance where the Golf Now savings makes this a great value proposition!
Greens were in really good shape for this time of year. It was pretty clear to me the course super knows how to manage his staff. Kudos to him and his staff.
The cashier (name?) in the club house could of been a little more friendly but maybe he was just having a bad day. It happens to all of us.
Drainage issues in traps
All in all, the course was in decent shape. The fairways and greens were soft, but fast and fair. However, the sand traps were in terrible condition. Often the traps were either rocky dirt with no sand , filled with water, or both. Literally standing water five inches deep. And when we played, it hadn't rained for at least 3 days. I can't think of an excuse for this. It was so bad that my foursome started giving each other free drops OUT of the traps since it was next to impossible to hit through/under the hard dirt/rocks/mud. I played this course 3 years ago and thought it was much better. I don't know what happened in those three years, but I won't be back for another three.
Course in excellent condition except the sand traps
The fairways were in wonderful condition, and the greens were thick and well maintained except for some small problem areas. Rough was cut to a good level so that you can find your ball and helps keep the pace of play. The sand traps are worst problem at the course, most of them are dirt with a little sand.
Incredibly slow pace of play
The course played incredibly slow. It would have taken at least 5:15 to play - and that was on a Thursday afternoon. Had to walk off without finishing the round. Inexcusable and pro shop simply did not seem to care. They clearly overbooked the course as they were putting groups off the front and the back.. Well, they keep on doing that and I expect soon others, like me, will not return.
Nice layout
Very playable, enjoyable course.Conditioning of everything but the bunkers were outstanding but bunkers were all clay and rock.Good value with senior rates or Golfnow.
NIce Course
Has interesting design and for being in a residential community houses do not come into play (or danger) too often. Greens in nice shape, fairway and tee boxes in good shape. The bunkers were an issue. They were either flooded or filled with rocks vice sand. Easy solution not to get in them, but more seriously, take a drop out of them to avoid permanent damage to ones clubs. All in all would play again since driving landing areas are fair and open and greens receptive to incoming shots,, and ball rolls well on greens.
well maintained fairways and rough this time.
The course was in pretty good shape. The greens were soft yet fairly quick. Sand traps need better sand...basically dirt with rocks in them right now. Was actually happy to find the range was open. Tends to be a problem with this course. I've played it 5 times this year and I have never been able to hit off ground at the range, always matts...that needs to change.
Pace was great; course was in good condition
Course was in good condition. Bunkers need sand, but all other elements of the course were good.
Nice course to play, in good shape for the most part...
This course is usually $85 on the weekend to play, which in my mind is over-priced. The deal they offered this weekend, $45, was a great deal (and it showed by the number of people out on the course). I think this course would do well to learn from that "price adjustment". For the most part, the course is really in great shape except for the bunkers which have absolutely no sand. They are really just clay/mud pits. I think they either need to find a way to keep the sand in them or just make them grass bunkers. All in all I really like this course, and luckily I kept it out of the "mud-sand!"
Bunkers were a disgrace
The fairways and greens were in nice shape, but the bunkers had standing water in them and no sand in the places that were dry. Some of the bunkers had large rocks that could damage your club if you played out of them. I realize that the area has received a lot of rain lately, but by 10AM you should be able to get rid of the water with a gas powered bilge pump. Like I said, though, there wasn't even any sand in them. Very disappointing that they have totally neglected this aspect of maintenance.
