South Riding Golf Club
About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

Rebuilding the traps but rest is worth it.
The traps on the back 9 are GUR and the front will be when back is completed. Otherwise, the course is in good condition. Some water collected in a few fairways and had to be careful not to sink in. Greens were flat and true. Overall, it was a fun time, I want to come back after they fix the traps and the course dries.
First Time Played
Played the course for the first time. As a twosome, we found this to be a good experience. Enjoyed the facility, and the course which was well laid out, with scenic and challenging holes with large undulating greens. Some of the bunkers were difficult, but these are in the process of being reconstructed. Our round would have flowed better from hole to hole had a ranger been on hand to expedite slow play of foursome immediately before us. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the round and are eager to play the course again.
This is a really good course in serious need of sand
I have been playing this course for years. It plays well and is generally in good shape. However, the vast majority of bunkers are currently nearly unplayable hard pan dirt. Some marshals to keep pace of play would have been very helpful for this round as well.
Soft and Fast
The course was in good shape. The green were soft like walking in a carpet, but smooth and fast. Nice rolling putts. You definitely don't want to be putting down at the hole if you can help it. S
Better than I remembered...
Recently moved back into the area. I hadn't played this course in years and was pleasantly surprised. The course is fairly well disguised for being in a densely populated suburban community. Greens were in great shape and overall condition was good. Only gripe would be terrible sand quality (which plagues every course in NoVa, and really is inexcusable...I'm not expecting Caribbean sands, just take out the rocks and rake it) but few bunkers will really come into play. Not a ton of challenges, especially if you keep the ball in play. This course is a good, fair test for your game...just not a destination course that's worth a day trip for. Good value at $50 or less. I would be underwhelmed if I payed the rack/weekend/holiday rates.
SOLID COURSE
Overall, the course is in excellent shape and it was an enjoyable round. The only noticable problem was the bunkers which were filled with rocks and contained standing water.
I like this course because it has about 7100 yd length. I played my game at the back tee.
I was lucky. the tee time was the hottest time during the day, but the price was good. I played by myself and had enough time to think about my game management and shot rythm. I enjoyed the day.
Locals only
This course charges pretty good money for very average maintenance. The bunkers were strewn with rocks that were embedded the bottom. There was standing water all throughout the bunkers an most had mud not sand coating the bottoms. Most of the bunkers were a disgrace.
The staff was disinterested in the customers. They gave no warning of the conditions nor did they even speak much to the guests. The starter was zeri help. There was no sign for the first tee and it's a was away so you end up wandering around looking for it. Same on 10.
The fairways and greens are good but do yourself a favor and drive down to 1757 Club for the same money or find one of the regional courses for less. You get about the same experience.
Good course, but with major bunker problems
Enjoyable layout with no badly designed holes. Fairways were in excellent condition. Greens were very good, with a couple of exceptions that had dead spots.
Bunkers, however, were terrible. Most had to be played as ground under repair. No sand, just dirt or mud with ruts and rocks. Not raked or conditioned in a long time, from the looks of them. They appeared abandoned. Almost like they all were being redone - if not, they certainly need to be. Very surprising, considering the condition of the rest of the place.
Rack rates are quite high. Wouldn't play without GolfNow discount.
Bunkers needs major help!
I've played this course many times over the years and cannot recall another time when the bunker conditions seemed so poor. Many, many holes had bunkers with hard ground / pebbles instead of decent sand. No. 17 is undergoing a renovation of the greenside bunkers and the ones with new sand seem fine. The entire course needs a bunker renovation! Otherwise, fairways and greens were oin good shape.
good course but lacking maintenance
We played this course on a day after it had rained the night before. Cart rule was 90 deg. and fairways were dry and had drained well, but all of the bunkers were lakes, completely full of water. The course obviously does not care about having maintenance try to pump the water out. I understand being subject to weather but not maintaining the course for normal play is not a good sign. I lost a couple of balls that were hit into the bunkers because you can't find your ball under all that water.
Otherwise, the course is a nice layout and good value for the discounted rates we got (about $40). I wouldn't pay more than that. There was no beverage cart at all. Some holes have houses really close to it and you need to be careful hitting your golf shot. Someone in our 4-some did hit a ball into a homeowner's backyard.
This course has moderate.
I like this golf course. It is the place near my house, and not too much crowded.
Very nice course
I really liked this course . I think once the weather completely changes it will be infra better condition.
Hard to find the course and the holes
Overall our experience was dissapointing for many reasons. First of all the course is thrown inbetween 10 different neighborhoods through the south riding area. Yet, there is only one way into the club house and if you don't know it you'll spend a good 20 minutes driving aimslessly around. There are no signs to the course and when we called the person in the pro shop they had no clue how to give us directions and basically told us good luck finding it. Once we did finally get there we were told to just follow the path around the club house to the first hole and guess what ,there were about 4 different paths we could take, and none said where hole #1 was, to make things even more ridiculous none of the holes actually have any markers or numbers on the tee box...where is the common sense. Fortunately, we were able to find another golfer and ask them and they told us which tee box was for hole #1. The course was in pretty poor shape between the goose droppings, mud, and uncut grass. And the course was not managed well at all in terms of pace of play, it tooks us just about 5.5 hours to play which is horrible. At best its a $25 round type of course if you like to wait to hit each shot, hopefully they will continue to clean it up and take care of it better.
Good condition
green was very good.
staffs are very friendly.
i will play next time.
Good time
Staff extremely friendly. Course in decent condition considering the recent weather. Great value...pace of play for a Saturday was great.
Good shape
The course was in good shape considering all of the rain and cold weather we've had (cart path only) guess God had a plan for me to get alittle exercise ;) Found a great "hot deal" on golf now and got paired with some really nice guys. We had a blast! Love the layout of the south riding golf course. Will definitely refer to a friend and be bad playing there soon.
