South Riding Golf Club
About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

Nice course to play, in good shape for the most part...
This course is usually $85 on the weekend to play, which in my mind is over-priced. The deal they offered this weekend, $45, was a great deal (and it showed by the number of people out on the course). I think this course would do well to learn from that "price adjustment". For the most part, the course is really in great shape except for the bunkers which have absolutely no sand. They are really just clay/mud pits. I think they either need to find a way to keep the sand in them or just make them grass bunkers. All in all I really like this course, and luckily I kept it out of the "mud-sand!"
Bunkers were a disgrace
The fairways and greens were in nice shape, but the bunkers had standing water in them and no sand in the places that were dry. Some of the bunkers had large rocks that could damage your club if you played out of them. I realize that the area has received a lot of rain lately, but by 10AM you should be able to get rid of the water with a gas powered bilge pump. Like I said, though, there wasn't even any sand in them. Very disappointing that they have totally neglected this aspect of maintenance.
good golf course
I think very good golf course, and price too. service and maintance is not bad. I want once more play there. Thank you
Nice course, average staff
Played on Saturday afternoon, course in pretty good condition. Bar staff very friendly but pro shop staff kind of let me down a bit, seemed like he was uninterested in being there. Overall good course.
Decent Course
Course conditions were ok, only gripe.......the bunkers were horrible.....not much sand and full of rocks.
Hit the right spots!
The fairways are generous - if you know where to hit. The greens are generally SLOW - especially uphill - putting down hill was much faster but inconsistent. Many holes were full of slopes. Pace of play was good until we caught up with a slower group on #8. No marshal. I'd recommend it but it was a bit pricey for the experience.
'Sand' traps? no
I will not go back to this place until they fill their sand traps. I have played there for years. It is a challenging layout with wonderful green complexes. The lack of sand in the bunkers have always been problematic. Yesterday was the last straw. I parred the first hole (started on 10) and hit a good shot on the long par 3, in a bunker but a few yards from the hole. If I could pop it out I might par the second. i get to the ball and there is no way I can hit out. There are rocks everywhere, including one directly behind my ball. I had to putt it out and hit it too hard. Disaster. I also watched balls roll across a bunker as if it was rolling on a basketball court. I won't go back.
Great layout excellent conditions
South Riding is an excellent, fair and challenging layout that is in great shape. I played alone at mid day and even with cart path only was able to get around in 3 and a half hours.
Typical NOVA public golf
Real wet the day we played but the greens were very firm. Cart path only, but still getting super-ball bounces on lofted approach shots. Like this layout, although it was better before the front nine became the back nine. Driving range was closed "due to the wet conditions" even though they have a hitting line with mats. Typical understaffed facility that doesn't have enough people to hand-pick the range, even on a weekend, because really the only way to pick a range is with a cart and a roller-picker (insert sarcasm here). Staff was, as is always the case at this course, rude. Nothing says "public golf" in NOVA the way that arrogant staff can. Hard for staff to be friendly when there aren't enough to do the job right in order to keep the customers happy. The upside is that if you can get out ahead of the "slow play" in NOVA, you can actually zoom around this course, even with it is cart path only.
Beautiful Course
I have played this course for many years and find it to still be one of the best deals around.
The Layout is nice but the condition was not great
The greens were very bumpy and patchy.
The fairways were in pretty good condition.
Parts of the course was wet but some of the holes could have allowed carts.
One of us thought that it was like playing the same hole over 18 times - not much character.
Well maintained
Course was in great shape at the end of April and should get even better after all this rain.
Not a ton of elevation changes and some of the par 4's started to feel pretty similar by the end of the round. Definitely a few challenging holes, but the majority of them are straight away. Keep it near the fairway and you shouldn't have much trouble here.
Nice course and definitely worth a round.
Course is in good shape for spring. Pace of play was good.
Tee boxes were pretty good and the fairways were very good. The greens were fast and rolled well but were a bit on the firm side. Good approaches tended to bounce rather than hit then stop. Had to play to front edge distances to keep it on the green. Overall a good course for the discounted greens fee.
nice housing developement course, variety of shots needed
south riding has a nice layout that would be much better without the couple holes with houses just OB. not much you can change now. nice greens, challenging par 3's. typical NOVA pace of play, too slow when you get caught behind the hacker 4-some marking every putt.
Love this course
Best green conditions in the area. Love the creativity of this course. Each hole is different and tests all aspects of your game. Cant wait to go back!
Good!
not great, but good. the course was very wet after heavy rain. but attractive course!
Nice and wel maintained....
The course was long enough for me and they were not too hard to play. Not that challenging... I enjoyed playing!!!
Great Layout
This course has a wide variety of types of holes that keep things interesting throughout the round. The course is open to scoring and making some birdies here or there for even the average golfer but take it too lightly and this course can make you pay as well. Good balance on the course of links style golf along with some woods golf and target golf. Overall great course one of my favorites in the area.
Grounds keepers Revenge
The pin placement was the most difficult I have seen on this course. Maybe it was the grounds keepers halloween trick or treat. The overall condition was good and the weather this day was good for mid Oct.
