The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Worth the trip
Enjoy my late afternoon round. The course was pretty open and in good shape.
VERY SLOW PLAY!!
We arrived early & started late due to course back-up and late golfer arrivals. The Marshall held us up to wait for the other late golfers, instead of letting us start closer to our tee time. While waiting, we ordered breakfast tacos that weren’t even warm. FINALLY got started & waited several minutes on every hole for the slow players ahead of us. Four & a half LONG hours later, we finished. A few of the greens needed attention. Course was good other than that & we enjoyed the layout.
Great value but slow
Good layout with reasonable conditions. Greens are spotty but are fine for the most part. You can get some great deals here which makes it totally worth it but the only killer for me is the pace of play. They have a starter but no Marshalls and it just seems to drag...5 hour round is standard.
Not worth it
Had high hopes for this course but was truly disappointed
Greens looked horrendous and were so bumpy... I don’t think they were even rolled
Will not play here again until conditions improve
Needs Attention
Greens are in bad shape, course is just over played with carts damaging playing surface around the greens. Although it’s a nice layout I think it’s getting too much activity.
Fun Layout
This course is fun to play and can also be challenging. Course was in good condition. Greens looked good and some tee boxes were a little firmer than others to push in the tee. Regardless, it was fun and enjoyable and I will definitely be back. And on top of that the staff was very friendly and helpful.
Wet, windy , and cold
But still a great time! Happened to golf on a rare sub 60 degree day in April in Houston....The wind was blowing hard off the ship channel, and there was intermittent rain, despite that an overall great experience.
Course was in solid shape and the round would've been imminently enjoyable had the weather cooperated.
Interesting layout, and the value is one of the better ones in the Houston area.
Put this one on your radar if it isn't already.
The green are in poor condition, most would call them two putt green. slow bumpy greens with burnouts, Unrepaired divots and almost unplayable. The fairways and tee boxes are average at best you will often have to roll your ball in the fairway to find a good lie. I do like the layout and although under staff for concessions the staff was friendly. I was disappointed that even though the golf course was full of patrons and they had a tournament going they still did not have a concessions cart person on the course and their lower on course concessions was also closed making it difficult to find refreshments during your round and the turn. they definitely have some opportunities for improving this course before it’s too late. I will not be back for some time. I will give them time to hopefully turn the greens around, the poor greens really takes the enjoyment out of it
Good Course
The course was in good shape, except a few on the greens needed attention. Carts worked well & buffet was nice. Marshall was very friendly & helpful.
good golf
We love this course and play it often. We are old seniors and
battle
ground gives a a great break.
Greenskeeper in a bad mood
The greenskeeper must have been in a bad mood, because 15 out of 18 pin placement were either on a hill side or the deadest section of green that could be found.. Somebody needs to show him/her how to turn the water on as the fairways were so dry I hit driver / 8 iron to a par 5, and I only hit my driver about 225.
Golf course supervision or lack of supervison
This is the most unprepared and professional golf course I have been at in on my 35 years we arrived 45 minutes ahead of time to use the range. we checked in and went down to get a golf cart, none were available and we were told that they wouldn’t have a golf cart available for ten 10 minutes.
our teatime was supposed to be in 40 minutes the golf club pro shop person was not professional and if he didn’t care. no one else was around the starter made no attempts to correct The situation l, there were people turning from number 18 and going 10. I talked to the pro shop person he said well or well and that was it, he made no effort at all to get more cards or get more assistance. I would never ever play here again or suggest playing here for anyone else again, it was the worst experience at a golf course I have ever experienced .
THE GREENS WHICH ARE NORMALLY GOOD WERE IN BAD SHAPE
Saturday
Great weather for a change. We were able to tee off earlier as to avoid waiting on the 1st tee. Fairways were crisp and cut. Greens were somewhat fast but great time.
Great clubhouse and bar the greens are not very good bare and don’t get good roill. Course is fun better hit it straight
Good open coarse
Nice coarse just watch out for balls coming at you. Fairways back and forth by each other. Not to easy on a breezy day. Overall I would say it is a good coarse and will go back to play again.
