The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

pace of play
front 9 was fine but back 9 was backed up club closed because to late and no marshall. Had to play front again. Greens were terrable
Layouts are fun and challenging, but....
Green are dead and in very bad shape. I think it may cause by heavy rains. I will return once the greens are back in good condition.
Great layout
Have always loved the layout of this course. It went thru a rough patch the last year or so but they've really brought it back. Very challenging course with trees/water makes you hit it straight. The restaurant there has great food as well!
Worth the money.
This course is ok. Its not in great condition but the price is fair for what you get. The back tees offer 6900 yards or so and I appreciate that. I probably wouldn't recommend this course without the caveat about the condition vs the cost. This place is good enough for your practice game though.
Horrible greens and tee boxes
I've played this course many of times seeing that I live less than 10 minutes away. However it has been a while since I've been last and let me tell you, it will be a long while before I go back again.
The greens are absolutely awful! Not as bad as they were a couple years ago when it was completely dirt, but pretty bad.
Whatever you do, do not play from the back tees. Nearly impossible to find a level area to tee from. Only box that was worth a darn was #17 and that's because they just completely redid it a couple months ago.
I'd be even more depressed if I would of paid more than $16 for tee time. Working at a golf store I'll be hard pressed to recommend customer play this course until they get the greens fixed.
Great Value. Very slow!
Very nice course for the money. Only complaints would be, the members believe they can jump to whatever hole on the course that's open. We were playing behind a foursome till around hole 12 when four more joined up with them. Very very slow, can't believe course management lets this happen. Started round st 4 and were unable to complete round by dark.
Pace of play was horrible!!!!
This is a nice course to play. Greens are true but very hard. As in like concrete!!! Fairways are ok. They are like hard pan in some places but ok in others. Tee boxes are very hard as well. Basically you will get a lot of roll in the fairway and no stop or spin on the greens. And if you book on golf now it will be more money then what it says is due at the course. I would have payed less just booking a tee time at the course.
Nice layout
It is a nice layout. Lots of trees make straight drives imperative. Petty course with tree lined fairways and lots of mounds. The greens have good speed, but are a bit rough. From the gold tees (only black are longer), the par fives are on the short side. But overall, it is a fun course to play.
WAS VERY IMPRESSED
I always see specials on this course and wanted to try it but I live in Katy and didn't want to make the drive, and to read the reviews on the course I had no interest at all. BOY WAS I SUPRISED!! Some of the bad reviews I read reflect nothing of this course and my experience on it. The greens were in good shape (although fast) the fairways were in good shape (although they were hard and I got a lot of roll on my shots) I had no problem with the pace of play and may have waited only on a couple of holes which was no big deal and wasn't long at all. I did not have much interaction with the staff but what little interaction I did have was pleasant. I was not disappointed making the drive to play this course and I would actually make the drive again to play it. I have been telling all my friends about it and plan on bringing some of them out to play it some time. Hopefully it will be the same experience that I had. The course is a little tricky and you have to pay attention to your scorecard and the holes, because there are spots where water crosses but you cannot see it from the tee box or where you are hitting from so it can fool you. Hit a good shot right up the middle and end up in water that you did not know was there, but as long as you pay attention to that then you should be able to plan your shots out just fine. It was very fun to play because I couldn't just pull out a driver and rip it on every hole, or pull out any club and just smash it, you actually have to play course management on this one and it was very fun...
overall I highly recommend playing this course
Throw in some water (not hazards)
tee boxes, fairways and greens all needed water. Very dry and hard. The greens they worked so hard at restoring are on there way back to being lost.
Need staff out on the course.. Group in front of us were parking carts right next to the green. They were 5 , we were 2. There were 2 holes open ahead of them but never even considered letting us through.
Great course
The greens are well maintained, somewhat challenging, but great overall experience
Good golf course, horrible pace of play
Gave it an overall rating of 2 stars for the horrible pace of play. The early Friday morning round took us 5.5hrs to play because of the slowsome in front of us. The marshall approached the slow group but it seems it was only to watch the female hit 3 balls into the water before he moved on. Made the turn near lunchtime and the snack bar had a sign in the window which read "out to lunch, be back in 30 mins". It is good thing that the cart girl came by frequently to offset the closed snack bar. The course is in really good shape and the greens are rolling true. Hopefully something can be done about the pace of play.
Smiles all around
They offered a buffet around lunch time for about $4 more then regular green fees. Comes with free range balls too. Best BANG for your coin :-D!
Unbelievable deal and about 15 min from downtown.
Enjoyable round of golf
Easy to like this course. Except for the fairly hard fairways, the course was in fine condition.
Great Price for a good course
Course was in good condition except a few bunkers. Water comes into play at a lot of holes can be challenging with wind involved (Today) but for the price you cant beat it. Would recommend to any level.
