The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Good Value
Enjoyed the course, very windy. Good condition for this time of year.
Pace too slow
Course is in good condition. The pace of play was 5 hours. The Marshall does not speed up slow players.
Hidden secret
Enjoyable and aesthetic
Pace of Play
I enjoyed the conditions of the course but was disappointed that we were not allowed to play through by the group in front. Maybe a reminder at the clubhouse to allow faster groups play through would be nice.
Greens are not in good shape at all
My tournament league played Battleground today. I wish I could report that Battleground at Deer Park is in very good condition but it definitely is not.
We had a group of 26 guys with our first tee time at 9am. Course should have had time to prep the bunkers but that was not the case. It appeared they had not been prepped in a couple of days.
The greens...geez...lots of spots all over them that looked as if they had pulled out weeks or sprayed for some sort of weed. And, they were horribly slow. There was some sand on them but they just were not in good shape. Fairways were nice, tee boxes were ok (going to have minimal grass on tee boxes when they are surrounded by trees with little to not air circulation.
Overall...Battleground was very disappointing.
We play the course every year in our league and normally it is in much better shape.
Fair course
Fairways and tee boxes in great shape.
Greens much better than they have been.
Sand traps not well maintained with some essentially unplayable.
Overall good value for money
Battleground - bring your balls!
This course is well maintained and enjoyable to play. It does challenge you to shoot straight, however, as there are water hazards a plenty.
The course is pretty straight forward, but the title refers to the amount of balls that I lost. The layout is a little funky with one green being used for 2 holes.
This course has great layout
Couple of green still have some weeds, but so far so good overall .
Hi uOSLM5805OS,
Thank you for your feedback. We look forward to your next visit with us!
Battleground
The greens have definitely fully recovered as they were rolling true (27 putts). A few areas on the course were a little wet but overall the course was in good shape. Speed was great as we played 18 in under 3.5 hours and were taking our time. I play there maybe once a month and this was a top 5 experience.
Hi rpombier,
Thank you for the great review! We are excited to hear how much you enjoyed your experience and we look forward to your next round with us!
Nice surprise
Course is in good shape. I enjoyed the layout and there are options for various skill levels. Fairways on some holes are narrow. Excellent service and the food facilities were great.
Pace of play was good until we hit a WGA outing but were able to eat lunch and play the last 4 holes after their event. Very accommodating and helpful staff
One of my favorites
Most always enjoy Battle course and the staff. It is one of my favorites. Due to rainy weather we had to stay on the cart path. We played in and out of the rain but finally had to quit after 9 due to rain becoming to heavy to play. We had a great time in spite of the rainy weather..
This course is a challenge
Had a great experience at Battleground. Staff was very helpful, the course gave us quite a challenge. We will be back.
golfer55
The course was in good shape although we were cart path only which I believe should have been 90 degree. We could only plat 9 because of long lighting delay.
Great Course
Great time playing the course
Hard Work Paying Off
I have played this track many times over the years. It is a very interesting layout and has seen a lot improvements over the last several months. Many greens have been re-sodded and they hold an approach shot much better. This club has spent some money inside as well; the bar and banquet areas are quite nice now. I was happy to see the greens get overhauled, as it was overdue. There were many tee boxes and rough areas that need attention, but I came away impressed overall with what they have done. I will be back.
Good job, Battleground staff!
Nice Course!
Enjoyed the course! Well kept & clean. Some construction is being done and 3 holes were closed but still managed to play around it.
I would go back!
battleground greens are back
11 of 18 of the greens have been fixed/re sodded.... the others greens recovered on their on and are playable, 9th green still needs time to recover. No temporary greens in play. The 3 practice holes (1 par 5, 1 par 3, 1 par 4) are still in play till 1st week of July. 2 of the 3 practice hole greens have been re sodded. Tee boxes are in good shape and the fairways are in EXCELLENT shape.
When they lost the greens in the Spring, I stopped playing Battleground. The greens have recovered and the course is in playable condition now and will only get better the first of July. And, as always the staff and the facilities are outstanding.
Wait until the Greens are repaired to play here
I've played here a few times before and liked it but this time no to happy. I'll still play here when they take care of the greens but not until then. It would probably make sense to list this issue in the golf now listing so customers can see it prior to making a reservation. They did however give us a 2 for 1 play for our next round which will bring me back later in the summer
Thanks for the feedback. It was a tough spring; we completed our renovations on 11 of our 18 greens in May and June. All greens are open for play. We’ve recently finished sodding the edges of greens #11, 12 & 13. We will continue to lower the mowing heights weekly. The greens have improved greatly over the past 30 days. If you have any other questions, please call me at the shop 281.478.4653 x 107.
Battleground 6/16
I would wait at least a month to play this course. They have lost most of the greens to fungus. About 5 holes have temporary greens and another 8 or so are pretty much unplayable. Shame, seems like a nice course.
We appreciate the feedback. It was a tough spring! All greens are currently open for play. The 11 greens we renovated were completed in mid June. We’ve recently finished sodding the edges of greens #11, 12 & 13. Mowing heights have been taken down weekly. We've seem a lot of improvement over the past 30 days. If you have any other questions, please call me at the shop 281.478.4653 x 107.
Awful Greens
Greens were undergoing maintance, and i was told there were temporary greens, and 2 hole that were on the practice course, but I was also told the greens were at about 50-80% there which was false, one green was only hard sand or whatever they want to call it. Other than that amazing fairways just wish i didnt waste my time and waited till it was done being fixed
Hey Joey thanks for the feedback and it was a tough spring! We completed our renovations on 11 of our 18 greens in mid June. All greens are now open for play. We’ve recently finished spot sodding the edges of greens #11, 12 & 13. Mowing heights continue to be lowered each week. The greens have improved greatly over the past 2 months. If you have any other questions, please call me at the shop 281.478.4653 x 107.
