The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Awful Greens
Greens were undergoing maintance, and i was told there were temporary greens, and 2 hole that were on the practice course, but I was also told the greens were at about 50-80% there which was false, one green was only hard sand or whatever they want to call it. Other than that amazing fairways just wish i didnt waste my time and waited till it was done being fixed
Greens need help
Fairways are nice & tee boxes well kept, only concern was the greens were not up to par bumpy, sandy but still OK note on the card states that should be ready in about four weeks, great news because this is a nice layout /course
Course under repair
All greens were in poor conditions and many were under repair. Course had 8 temporary greens cut out on the fairways.
Greens?
I was warned by the course prior to my arrival that their greens were in "poor" shape. This is a nice way of saying don't bother. Something has killed almost all of the grass on all of the greens. They are trying to repair some (3) greens, but the rest were painted sand. While the fees were not the highest in the area, I feel they were too much for the conditions. I will not play here again until the greens problem is corrected.
Greens?
I booked my tee time through Golf Now. I chose this course because I used to live closer to it an played it several times a year. After booking online I received a phone call from the course the same afternoon. The gentleman on the phone was quite pleasant and said he was calling to inform me of the course conditions, specifically the greens. Three of which were currently under repair. The remainder had little grass left. This created a rather interesting round when it came to putting and chipping. All in all it was an enjoyable round. I think that the staff went above and beyond by calling ahead of time to give me the heads up regarding the conditions of the greens. I look forward to playing here again; after they recover the greens.
Good except horrific greens
I like the course layout but the greens are the worst I've ever seen. Multiple greens are undergoing reconstruction which leads to multiple alternative holes and alternative greens. Apparently they brought in experts from Texas A&M to give opinions and suggestions on how to fix the greens but are still a long way away from even being below average.
The course is under repair
My partner and I should have been told that the Greens were in bad shape. There were two substitute holes used that are part of there practice facility and one temporary green. It was not an enjoyable round. The fairways are excellent. It does look like they are taking all necessary steps in bringing the course up to par.
All good except.......
The GREENS!!!! I've played this course maybe 5 times over the last 3 years. Always a good challenge but their greens apparently have been attacked by a fungus. A minimum of 75% of every green on average is nothing but rolled sand. Unfortunately this course will have this condition at least until late summer or fall. I understand they have sought the help of Texas A&M agronomists for help. But I won't be back for a minimum of one year and then I will thoroughly check greens condition!
Weak Greens, no weekend beverage service
I remember this course as being great from playing in a tournament years ago, but certainly not great at this time with less than average fairways and very weak greens and tee boxes. To add to the frustration, there was no beverage service during our Saturday round that started at 11. I like the layout and will give it one more shot hoping I just caught it at the wrong time.
Worst greens I have ever played on
Payed full price on a Saturday for the worst greens I have ever seen. Putting on my driveway is what I would compare it to. I think they need to shut down to let the greens recoop. No warning from the club pro of green conditions. You have now been warned.
POOR GREENS
This was such a nice course at one time but the greens have been in such poor condition for so long and there still not doing anything to get them back they just keep putting specials out to keep players coming out.
Great Layout, Slow Play, Bad Greens
Prepare to spend 5 hours due to slow play. No Marshall was available to speed up the slow players ahead of our group. Overall, the course was in great condition but doing this time of the year (Jan-Mar) greens were like the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay which was subject to criticism for its bumpy greens. This is the only course in past 5 outings where I three putted (5x's) more often due to the greens . When the Club Pro mentioned greens are playing true, I had no idea that is what he meant. But, I have played here before in the summer where the greens roll nicely. It is a great course over all. My guess that being "Good Friday", the rough greens, slow play and a impatient golfer behind us, made me rate it a 5 out of 10 rating.
You should be warned about poor greens !
For a Sunday, I booked a good green fee - $25.00 @ 01:00 PM. When paying at the pro shop, I could see the#1 and #18 greens, they appeared to be sanded, which is OK in my book. Nothing said in the pro shop about green conditions. Upon reaching the #1 green, I was astounded to see that the green was trash. The entire green and nearly all of the greens on the course held dead grass. It appeared that the entire green had died off. My complaint is that there was no warning at all from the pro shop. It was apparent as to why I got a lower green fee, as The Battleground delivered a poor product. I would verify through someone other than the pro shop before returning to this course.
Good after rain
Course played cart path only, but heavy rains all week weren't on the fairways or bunkers. Still good design for average golfers.
Typically great course, greens in terrible shape
Typically this is one of my favorite public courses in the Houston area. It is a nice layout, even if a bit boring, and the water on many holes adds a nice challenge. The pace of play is also generally good. Every other time I've played, the course has also been in excellent shape, making this a wonderful value for the money.
However, the greens are currently in terrible shape as of late February. It looks like they have been poorly cared for over the winter, a combination of being dried out and having invasive grass taking over. Some of the greens on the front 9 were nearly unplayable, it was like trying to putt on a concrete driveway. The conditions seemed to improve somewhat on several holes on the back 9 however. It has been several months since I last played here, but this was a total surprise as the conditions are typically significantly better, especially since our winter has been so mild. I will say though that despite the greens, most of the bunkers were in excellent shape, appearing to have been recently groomed.
This course would generally be one of my top recommendations on the east side with great values, but unfortunately I would warn people to avoid temporarily until they get the greens under control again.
Great Course
Nice layout, great weather, friendly staff. Very enjoyable round.
lynn's
I like playing here. The greens are in pretty rough shape but it's winter time.
Great experience
It was the second time playing this course and every thing was great.
Nice course
Wish it was closer to me.....but worth the drive. Awesome greens
Hey Joey thanks for the feedback and it was a tough spring! We completed our renovations on 11 of our 18 greens in mid June. All greens are now open for play. We’ve recently finished spot sodding the edges of greens #11, 12 & 13. Mowing heights continue to be lowered each week. The greens have improved greatly over the past 2 months.
