About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Nice Greens
The fairways were better than 2 weeks ago. Had some ladies cut in front of our tee time saying they were with the woman's league and needed to catch up with the others. Was in a good mood so didn't argue.

Greens are beautiful
Fairways need watering, ladies tee boxes need watering, but greens are really nice.

Needs help
105 temp and no beverage cart or water on the course. Other than that it is a really nice course!

A Bit Rough
Nice layout. However, the course is really dry. They had punched and dressed the greens a bit back, even with that, they still rolled pretty well.
Fairways really dry. They had also let quite a few fairway bunkers go. Grass and weeds in them. Maybe they cleaned them up since we played but when we went through they were rough.
I will maybe try again next year but not again this summer.
Caveat is of course we are having a brutal weather stretch here in July and August. Some courses are dealing with it better than others.

Course is burnt up
I play here a fair amount, it the closest course to where I live. I like it but a member admitted to me they are out of water and can basically water the greens only. I believe it after today. Tee boxes were brown and hard as a rock (you need a hammer to get a tee in the ground). Fairway's were brownish with lots of earth cracks starting to show. Greens however were pretty good. I don't know how they can charge these high prices with a course is such poor condition. I'm sure it will get better by October/November but until we get several inches of rain i'm gonna play elsewhere...

Great afternoon golf
It was hot outside so that hot deal was spot in. The course was great, and any area that was not 100 % was marked GuR. The greens were 10/10 and soft.

The course was in good shape considering the amount of rain DFW had in the last month. The greens were perfect for this time of year. The course seems to be drying out in certain spots. Some of the tee boxes were a little hard. The biggest draw back was the pace of play. We teed off at 9am on Sunday morning and finished at 2pm. To long for a 100deg day. Over good course.

Slow Players
Fairways are dried out much than other public courses in July in the DFW. This course is definitely challenging and most of greens (Champions Bermuda Grass) are extremely fast with double breaks, so beginners become ,naturally, very slow players because of searching for their balls in creeks, woods, water, hit more shots at uneven lies to the elevated greens and making more than three putts. Especially, most of tee shots of the 18 hole come across to the 17th fairway, so this is one of the factors in slow play. I don't recommend this course to the beginners in this hot weather.
