About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

6-somes, 5-somes galore!
I’ve played here before and booked today intending to JOIN as a member after the round. Entire plan was derailed by a 6-some and no fewer than four 5-somes that were let out with random twosomes in between. I get it that it’s a Monday but no respectable course should allow this… especially on what was realistically an extension of a holiday weekend.
Walked off the course after 14 holes intending to speak with someone in the clubhouse about my experience and everyone was gone. Building locked up and pro shop shut down. Others have told me this “isn’t the norm” but truly…. A horrible experience.

Stuck by the Thorntree
This is a classic mid-century course, not super long, but with multiple lines of defense ranging from trees, to sloped greens, to run-offs into creeks.
Several holes create discomfort off the tee, with trees narrowing your window for success. The course was also running very fast, which brought other danger into play for tee shots struck on less than perfect lines.
The greens were much tougher than expected after practicing on the rather slow putting green. Assuming a two putt was never safe.
The conditions were good, but not pristine... certainly nothing to be upset about.
As a first timer, this course definitely got the best of me. There is definitely an advantage to having some course knowledge (brining a good swing with you would help too).
This is a solid course, and I'd love a rematch. Check it out, but be patient!

great round
Excellent ound of golf. I always enjoy Thorntree. Greens were in great shape and true, not easy, and quite large. Bunkers needed attention. Fairways had nice grass to hit off of. Overall, a wonderful day of golf. Thanks.

Pace
Pace of play was awful. Took entirely too long to finish our round since the foursome in front of us was playing at a snails pace. Didn’t see a marshal the entire time…which was 6 hrs.
We apologize for the pace of play issue you experienced. We always try to keep a great pace when having our golfers on the course. Typical golf review
No special amenities here. Straight forward course, there are a few holes with water in play.
No water coolers on course due to covid, but no masks are worn inside the pro shop. Lazy?
Fairways are decent and greens are tight & small.
Rental clubs are not cared for, taken care of and need major TLC.
Most carts charging ports don’t work.
Golf carts are in decent shape.
Cart ladies are the highlight of the day.
