Thorntree Country Club
About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

An Honest Review
I read a lot of comments prior to playing my round and many of them said their rounds were slow. During the week my round was normal, I waited no long than 2 minutes maybe on the tee box. On the weekends however I can see this course getting backed up because it is a hard course to play. Which is which I rated the course layout as a 5/5 because I like a challenge. Now on to the good stuff!
Tee boxes - flat, maybe a little hard in some areas but good.
Fairways - patchy is a couple areas but for the most part good. As winter sets in they are rolling, so if you have a shot to a creek that is 200 yards, only play a 175 yard shot because it will roll out a bit.
Greens - high quality, best part about this course! When you see a foot of break right to left aim another 6-10 inch out because they break more than you can tell. You’ll figure out in the first couple of holes.
Bunkers - they aren’t maintaining them during COVID, so they’ve got foot prints in them, just pull your ball out or smooth out the sand and replace your ball.
Practice facility - looked good to me, I putted and chipped, but didn’t hit on the range. The practice putting green was very flat compared to the greens on the course, but the speeds were the same. The chipping green in to the right of the driving range.
Enjoy your round!! Don’t spend too much time looking for lost golf balls, it’ll only hold up everyone behind you.
Easy start, tough finish
#18 handicap hole follows the #15 handicap hole to start the round, though #1, #2, #4 handicap holes are in the hole 3-8 stretch. #2 is a slightly uphill wedge to an undulating green. Make sure you look at the course map on the scorecard so you can plot out your 2nd shot on the par-5 4th.
There is a narrow entry to the fairway on #6. A large pond borders the entirety of the 8th so miss left on the tee shot if need be. It's easier to play the par-5 9th & par-5 15th using the left compared to the right side of the hole.
There are bathroom facilities at the turn as well as midway through #13.
#11, the #5 handicap hole, is tough because of the hazards on the left of the hole, which tends to slope left as well. #12 also slopes to the left and is uphill. Make sure you position your tee shot on #13 to the right so that you don't have a tall tree to hit over on your approach.
#14 is a blind tee shot from an elevated tee. #16 is a difficult approach in that bunkers surround the green & there is a forced carry over water. #17 is uphill; #18 has quite the false front and a narrow entry to the fairway, particularly for those who favor a left-to-right ball flight.
Course was in good shape; #10 fairway was dry on this day; tee boxes appeared dry but it wasn't impossible to tee the ball.
Great Greens, Slow Pace of Play
Really love this course and the greens, but pace of play was disappointing - 5 hour round. They just need a marshal and this course would be 5 stars all around.
Nice greens
Course was in excellent shape.
Bunkers in poor shape and no rakes at this time.We just picked up when going into sand and hit.
No water on course and no cart girl.Several groups ofc5 out there today. It was not an issue as they all had there own cart and were better than average golfers.
Not sure what the great reviews are about
I decided to play Thorntree after reading all the recent good reviews. Honestly, I don't agree with some parts. The good: the greens were perfect. Still green, decent speeds, and very true. We played on a Monday morning in less than 4 hours. The meh: the layout is funky and weird - two 600+ yard holes and a few 330 yard holes. Not a course if you like to hit driver. Lots of leaves on the ground caused a few lost balls within a few yards of the fairways. The bad: Bunkers were awful and many were unplayable. Liners were coming thru on many. Fairway and green surround grass was very thin, brown and bare. Took a lot of shots out pf play.
There are a lot better courses in better areas for the same cost. It was a nice course to try, but wouldn't travel back to play it.
Great round at a great price!
Even though a little crowded the pace of play was good and the conditions were excellent!
Great course
I’ve seen the slow pace of play reviews, luckily for us we tee’d off before anyone so that wasn’t an issue. I never leave reviews because nothing has ever really stood out but Thorntree was a fantastic place. I don’t know if it was because of the absolutely picturesque fall day or what, but the course was incredible. It kicked my butt for lack of a better word. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. The tee boxes were fantastic, the fairways were fantastic, the greens were immaculate a little slow I prefer my greens with some speed but they were fine nevertheless. I had the best time I could imagine even though I lost to my buddy. Just overall a great course I can’t wait to get back out there next Sunday morning!
Decent
Greens played really well, course was in good shape, but without a starter or Marshall, we were waiting up to 20 min per hole. We had to quit after 3 hours just on 11 holes. It just seemed to be full of people that just didn't care about pace of play which was evident by 4somes on every hole that never looked back. Some courses are just better because of who plays them - people with golf etiquette... Which was not found here.
Beautiful, well-groomed course
Play moved along smoothly with little wait time with the round taking less than 4 hours. Cart girl made rounds in a timely fashion and was there until at least 3:30 pm. Greens are well-kept.
Great greens!
Great greens, good value, and challenging course!
Clean and tidy Clubhouse, Pro Shop, and Restrooms!
Staff was pleasant and efficient!
We would play again!!
Country Club feel
Tough course, very well laid out! Greens, tee boxes, fairways all in great shape. Staff great-cook was fantastic!!
The course was in nice shape.
Good value with Teed Off. The greens were pretty nice. Pace of play was Ok.
Painfully Slow!
Hands down the slowest course I’ve ever played. Saw 3 five-somes that refused to let anybody through. Another three-some ahead of us were sharing clubs. Every tee box had 2 or 3 groups waiting to tee off. Never again, if you enjoy 5+ hour rounds and standing around EVERY hole this is the place for you. Brutal!!
Horrible pace of play
Hands down the slowest course I’ve ever played. Every tee box was 2 or 3 groups deep on a Thursday. I counted 3 five-somes and we had 3 younger gentlemen in front of sharing clubs. Course was very challenging and overall in great shape with the exception of the bunkers which were unplayable. I will not come back solely due to the pace. Waiting 15+ minutes to tee off on each hole was brutal. No marshal and no courtesy equals a very long round. (5+ hours)
Wow, we are so happy you enjoyed your round, dwaz777! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
