Thorntree Country Club
About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

tough
played much longer than last time because of overnight rain
Nice greens
This course is in excellent shape.
Staff is friendly trying to make extra buck though.
I made reservations online through Thorntree website an it said I owed $43 when I got to course and they made me pay $53 saying it was an error..
Then my last visit after booking and paying through golf now for two green fees separately I wanted two carts and was told it would cost me $10 more dollars.
Makes no sense if my friend booked it him self he would have got his own cart at no charge since it would have been included in green fee.
This is not enough to not make me come back but it is now third choice on my list.
Nice Test of Skill
If you bring your “A-Game” you’ll have a great time. Anything less, bring a couple cartons of balls. You have to put the tee shot in the right place to even have an approach, let alone a straight shot to the hole. The greens roll very nicely. Could add a lot more sand to the bunkers.
I LOVE PLAYING HERE
The back 9 is much harder to play than the front. The women's red tee boxes are very generous, but I still had to play over water. The ruff around the water is thick and I lost a lot of balls in the ruff--even though I saw where my ball landed. The morning tacos are so cheesy and good and the bar area is cool and nicely laid out.
Dallas County gem
Played for the 2nd time in a week. We came back as our first round was so much fun. The course is in great shape, and the layout is not like most Dallas area courses. The elevation changes make the course a great change of pace. We went off at 0700, walked and were done in 3:20. Even early in the morning the cart girl came by and saw us twice. Fantastic value for the money. This course is quickly becoming one of our favorites.
Great Course For The Price
It was a great round today. About $33 for the round, which in DFW for this course condition is a steal. They take care of their ground very well and other respected the ground. I never saw an un fixed divot today. The staff will take your cooler and hold on to it if you try to bring it on the course. They also do not like you using the real grass on the driving range, which I thought was pretty weird. Overall great experience and would recommend it to anybody.
Great course
Really fun course with a lot of challenges throughout. One of my favorite courses to play in Dallas.
will be back for more rounds!
course conditions were awesome, can't wait to play this course again!
Thorntree Rocks!
Many area courses have a lot of fairway lined houses that make the game less enjoyable. I love that most of Thorntree is wide open!
I’ll be back
COVID makes things difficult but they have the course under control. It’s a little high priced in my opinion but the course is in great shape. Greens were good and the fairways were nice. I’ll play here again.
Worst course I’ve played in DFW
Terrible layout, greens are like sponges-doesn’t hold a wedge shot, but also roll at probably a 7. The only bright spot was the wrap I ate.
Course was in great condition. I was a little worried about playing in the heat but the cart girls came around several times. Pace of play got a little slow on the back nine.
Very Nice
This has a lot of doglegs but that's probably typical of country club courses in neighborhoods. Played after 30 minute rainstorm and course drained well, particularly the greens. Was solo and completed in 2 hrs 5 minutes. WOW!
Will be back.
