About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Good condition, course in good shape- some sanding of greens still present.

The course was in great shape and the pace of play was good. Liked the course layout.
Green and Narrow
I had no idea this course had gone public growing up it has always been private. Found it on GolfNow so I jumped on it. Course is in very good shape considering the heat is kicking up in Texas. It’s narrow but very playable shot my best ever round on this date! With that being said I’ll definitely be back plus it’s priced very well!
great long challenging course
conditions were excellent. the course is very challenging and can frustrate. i think i left a lot of balls in those creeks. greens are very true and fair. the 18th hole is too difficult though and needs a redesign.
Nice, challenging course from the tips
The recent rain has the course in good condition. I played in the early morning when rain was expected. Thus, it was a nice, damp, and cool July morning; which set up the course nicely relative to the typical hot and dry summer days.
The course is challenging from the tips with numerous obstacles in the way such as trees. It is definitely a different course with different looks relative to the blue tees.
I highly recommend this course which is now a part of my rotation.
Excellent
Course was great. Greens rolled pure and true. Fairways were well-manicured. Course is challenging, physically and mentally. There are several risk-reward holes.
Great golf
Excellent golf course. I’ve played it several times through Golfnow reservations. Love it!
Outstanding course
Played the course for the first time today and was thoroughly impressed. The staff was very friendly and prompt, didnt have to wait on the starter at all for one of the first tee times of the day (7:30) and somehow managed to see the cart girl twice during my round. (I imagine its more as the day goes on) Even with my early morning round and seeing greens keepers everywhere, I never once had a problem playing. All of them were insanely accomodating and were very nice to either turn off the motors or drive out of my way for a shot.
Fairways were in excellent conditions, couldn't find a single dry spot. Even the rough was amazing to hit out of, (soft and fluffy) none of the crab grass that I have typically found here.
Greens were immaculate, no divots, no dry spots, lots of variety. Some massive with some levels to them while others were relatively small and mounded.
Traps were also in great condition, it had rained the night before so they were hard at the beginning but my last few holes had soft traps that had clearly just been raked by the staff.
Hands down my favorite course in Dallas so far. Will definitely be returning.
First Time back
I have not played consistantly since High School but was paired with a kind and very patient golf buddy for a memorable outing. I t was a very challenging course that demanded every shot done well . It was very well maintained and a pleasure to be on. I have a long way to go to play this course with any pride. Thank you.
