Thorntree Country Club
About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

I loved the Cups. You guys have the best cups around DFW. The greens are FANTASTIC, absolutely PERFECT! You only need to improve holes 5, 6, and 11....it's almost impossible to keep ball in play off the tee and that's all you need to ruin the whole round. Everything else is Perfect...the best layout and most difficult in Dallas, is a Treat to play this course despite the difficulty....I love it!
Good course
Course in good conditions and greens in great shape. Very windy today (25-30 mph) and walking only, so got a bit tired at the end of round. There are some shot makers holes that are really tough with that much wind. Had a good time and the pace of play wast fast.
From the white tees
We enjoyed the walk and pace of play. A daunting first hole for a lefty like me with houses lining the left. After that the homes are set back and you feel more in the open and in nature. The tournament and championship tees looked much more challenging with monster length on number 10. I will go back when the opportunity presents.
Fun Course
Walking only. Course was the driest I have played, suprised by the amount of rain we have had. A lot of elevation change and sloping fairways. Fun course
Better Bring Your A Game
I've played courses form Wise county to Bear Creek. And ex friend con me into playing Thorntree, He forgot to tell about the million trees and bunkers. I will try Thorntree again, after I have my complete physical.
Distancing make pace great
Online booking makes checking in and getting out great!. Walk up, get the key and go. The pace was great with everyone on his own cart. Now if folks would learn how to manage with 2 on the cart. Greens were true and there were unexpected bounces in our favor even after all the rain we've had. Solid place to play right now.
5 hr round on a Tuesday
This review is for this point in time, not an all encompassing critique. Still winter .Lies very tight, Little grass. Ladies group we caught up with was s-l-o-w. A round, on a Tuesday, with few people on the course took 5 hrs. Spent 25 minutes waiting at one hole for them to finish. Played a couple of holes twice to kill the time. Other times I've played have been just fine. The weather made it worth it.
Great layout
Thorntree is a shotmaker's course with length. The greens were just fertilized and unplayable and the fairways are winter hardpack, but the golf is always interesting and fun at Thorntree.
Thorntree Roung
Challenging course, but fair. Fairways need to have more grass which should occur as we approach spring
For a person that doesn’t play Thorntree regularly, My partner and I had to figure out where holes8-11 we’re located. There weren’t no markings/signs pointing which way to go. We quit playing after 11 holes due to our frustration. The experience really spoiled what started out as a great day on holes 1-7!!!!
Play for experienced player
Look like harder fairway.. even passes rain storm?
Slow player's due to hitting moligans in front of us..
But enjoyed rounding with entirely course design.
Great Course
Layout is great. The fairways and greens have more undulation than excepted driving around the area. Difficult golf course that requires you to shape the ball both ways off the tee and into greens. Greens are in excellent condition. Can’t wait to play here again in the spring and summer when the grass is in prime condition.
Hidden Gem
Thorntree is a hidden gem located in DeSoto. It's an old school country club that is available to the public. I've played there several times, and have always enjoyed it. It starts off with an easy down hill par 4, and then a short par 3 that is more difficult than it appears thanks to a multi-tier green. From there, the course gets more difficult, and you'll want to come back again and again to try and tame it. Greens are relatively new hybrid bermuda, fast and true. Bunkers are in pretty good shape, better than most course s in DFW. Very interesting layout overall.
