Thorntree Country Club
About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

How do they get away with 7 min tee time intervals?
Overall terrible experience. How in the world can they justify having only 7 minutes between tee times? There were always two group on each tee box, waiting on every shot. After 4.5 hours we left... that was hole 13.
Slowest Round Ever
Almost 3 hours to finish 9 holes. Horrible. Will not be back.
Slowest Play in DFW
2hr 45min for 9 holes. Will not come back. Tee times 8 minutes apart clearly don’t work, surprised they haven’t fixed this yet.
Decant day
Love the challenge of this course. Made me go and buy a slope enabled rangefinder to figure out some of the elevations. Groups sent out in 2s, 3s 4s and 5-somes which made for aggravating pace of play. No water or cart service on course. Need more snacks in pro shop for faster turnaround rather than going into full-service restaurant. Could only get peanuts and chips from shop. Practice putting green is in amazing condition.
Decent track
Decent course, kind of funky in its layout. Fairways are solid, bunkers are hit or miss, and tee boxes were ok but greens are very good.
Traps Getting Better
They are not all refurbished, but they are getting better. Keep up the good work.
A Must Play!
Played Thorntree for the first time, the course is wide open and is very forgiving. I definitely recommend this course to any golfer in the DFW area. It was surprising how fast the pace of play was. Finished my round in four hours with a foursome.
Talk about letting a business go downhill fast
Absolutely the worst run of golf I’ve had in many many many years. I actually used to be a member here twice back when it was private. They have let the course go into utter disrepair. They were playing a tournament on a Saturday. We had a seven hour round. Absolutely no drink service on the backside. I will never return to this place again. I highly suggest you take them off of Golf now as to not ruin your reputation.
Tough Day @ Throntree Tree
Raining at Throntree...there was a tournament going on and it rained at the start of the back 9. Tough day did not finish..
Worst pace of play I’ve ever experienced
It took us an hour and twenty minutes to get through the first 3 holes. There were carts lined up 3 in a row for a while just waiting to tee off. This was likely caused by a group of 8 that was around 5 or so groups in front of us. All in all I couldn’t recommend a course that has no Marshall and would let a group of 8 play.
Slowest course in DFW.
Not good fairways, greens are average, but the pace of play is horrid. 20 minutes behind tee off time. An hour in and only done with 3 holes: this course needs a dang marshal. How hard is it? Don’t come here on the weekends. Or at all honestly,
Fairway bunkers might as well not have a rake, looked like they were allowing them to revert to grass. Greenside bunkers were packed down and light on sand. Fairways and tee boxes were in okay condition. Greens were slow but in pretty good shape and consistent throughout all 18 holes. Little to no POA.
Decent Value
The layout is just challenging enough to be fun, without being too punishing.
