Thorntree Country Club
About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Great greens. Rest of course was a mess
Great greens that putt true. Bunkers were a joke with as much grass in many of them as sand. Very rough around the edges with bare spots in many fairways but interesting layout and quality greens make it still worth the trip.
Great course
Great course, had a few spots on fairways but no rain all summer in Texas will cause that. Greens were fantastic and rolled true.
Tough Course
This is the toughest course in DFW. Very challenging. Has a 140 slope rating from the blue tees.
Needs water badly
Decent shorter course that has many unique holes that require course management. The course needs water badly though. The ground was too firm, fortunately the greens were in good condition, but the tee boxes and fairways are struggling. The bunkers all need to be redone or removed, just not playable.
Range failure
They have the Top Tracer system in place but I have tried to use it several times but it is always out or offer, they are having some tech problem, etc, but still charge higher than average for the balls. The mats are so worn and cupped they are useless. Only good part is everyone uses grass in front of mats and no one has ever objected. Downside is y they don’t set a line so people are standing all over the place. Course is nice for this time of year.
Needs water and TLC
The greens were in good shape. The rest of the course needs water badly. The ground is really hard, the teeboxes were torn up on many holes and good luck getting a tee in the ground. Had to avoid playing in most of the bunkers as they are not taken care of them, or they lack enough sand to make them playable. It is a fun layout, not too long, but it needs some TLC.
A Real Challenge
Fun day on the course
Putting green was super fast which prepared you for the challenge ahead
Was greeted on the 1st tee by the 2 ball ahead of me. They informed me this is one of the toughest courses in DFW area !!
I soon found out it was a real challenge
Lots of sloping fairways, doglegs, water and creeks
The tee boxes were rock hard and needed some water but they were flat
Fairways rolled forever often ending with your ball i. The rough and difficult to find
Greens were sloped and FAST
A couple of funky holes - one with a choice of a 290 carry over water or an iron onto a sloped fairway running down to a creek
Overall a fun round of golf
Always fun
Some of the layout is very unusual. Greens were near perfect, firm and true. Fairways were firm fast. Most bunkers could use some work. Carts were very good. Staff very friendly.
Great Greens, Friendly Staff, But...
Greens are in excellent condition, they are fast, they break and are a true challenge. Friendly and helpful staff. The course however is not in near similar condition. Fairways a okay with patches of dry grass and cracked soil. Bunkers are empty to the point of the fabric lining pulled up and frayed. Bunkers are also wet and muddy with no rain recently. Tee boxes are not kept up well. Overgrown and long storm damaged trees throughout.
Great course w things that could improve.
Overall the experience was great. It is a well designed course but can be a challenge. The fairways were tight compared to others. Would play again.
Signage and directions could have been better. I had the first tee time and in the dark it was not easy to tell where the golf shop was and it almost appeared closed. Staff and fellow golfers could have been more inviting and friendly. Overall a good experience.
Lifelong Dream Course Attained
I grew up in DeSoto when Thorntree was still a private country club. I could only dream of playing the course as we didn't have private CC money. Finally got to play for my 50th birthday. The course was well maintained and the marshal did a great job of keeping the pace of play flowing. The layout is slightly challenging but very playable with some greens that you can really attack. I played the 666yd monster hole in particular and was super happy with that.
Disappointing
Greens are immaculate.
The rest of the course/ fairways a’is terrible!
Very disappointing.
Not Easy Course
I have only played the front 9 twice and the back 9 for the first time on this day. I must say the course is different. Holes 3 and 4 are the most challenging. Hole 3 tree line off the tee is very intimidating. Hole 4 the second shot is blocked by only a 50ft gap between trees. if you can walk away with PAR you are in a good place, the course opens up after that. Green are good, nice role. My only complaint was the sand traps, sand would change per hole.
