Thorntree Country Club

About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Fun layout, greens are in good condition
Overall fun course, would play again. They need to do something about pace of play - we had to wait on every hole
Great Greens
The start was a little backed up but pace picked up after a couple of holes. Greens are some of the best around but fairways are still in need of grass but it enjoy playing there.
Great Greens
Several of the holes are very challenging which makes it fun. The fairways could use a little TLC but greens are in great condition.
Etiquette lessons needed
Great for first 12 holes, then caught a walker fishing for balls (I was on a cart). He picked up and went to 14, teed off and went on. Followed him all the way, waited on every shot, never offered to let me through or play along. Good news is I was not really pressed for time, but I was getting hungry…. Course was nice.
Overbooked and overly complicated
This course could be fun. However the day my group and I played it was so overbooked that we had to get in line on the first tee just to tee off 15 minutes late. Pace of play was almost 6 hours. It was so slow that we had a 5some behind us that hit into us multiple times, no Marshall, that I saw…course itself has some unique holes.. but for the average golfer like myself it wasn’t much fun to play because good shots would often end up in trouble due to the very small landing area available and because the ground was so hard, (played like they don’t water) it was virtually impossible to control your golf ball. Don’t play this course unless you enjoy getting your gut kicked in.
Great shape for March
Course was in great shape, better than 3 other courses played in last two weeks. Greens were moderate in speed (I like ) and very consistent hole to hole. Top tracer on range back on-line and was a great help pitching.
Rude staff and course NOT worth the money.
I was a single rider and was a minute late which I understand is on me, but to not slow up pace of play or the group I was joining I asked for an additional cart so I didn’t have to run to the tee box and they actually made me pay an additional cart fee. The person working the register (no way he was a pro) was rude and not helpful. After charging me he couldn’t even find a key so wasted more time. A grounds guy ended up jumping in and taking one off his personal key ring. Needless to say, I won’t be back. No way that course is worth 100$, greens were ok, rest of course was dead. And to add insult to injury I only saw the cart girl once the entire round. Terrible experience
Deadtree
Great old layout, but not in the best shape. Fairways are 100% hardpan, which makes a few holes (11-12 in particular) virtually unplayable. Maybe that gets better next month? Most bunkers are a disaster. Greens are good, but probably haven't been re-leveled since the 80-90s. This means that the greens are steep and there isn't an easy putt on the course. Course could be a gem, but that takes money.....Staff was friendly, which was a plus. If the fairways grow back, I'll return.
Player Beware - Don’t Play This Course
Booked a 130pm tee time to play on 3/1/25, on the Thursday before. Should have been my first red flag, that they were one 2 courses in the DFW area with 2 spots open before 3pm. Arrived 1 hour early to get checked in and warm up, as this was my first time playing the course. Pull up to the 1st tee box 10 minutes before my time and there were 3 foursomes waiting. They were 3 groups behind. I stepped into the Golf Shop, asked if they knew they were this backed up, was not disclosed to me at check in. The two gentlemen, stated “it’s Saturday afternoon and 75 degrees, it’s gonna be backed up”. I play golf all over DFW weekly at all different times and I have never been this backed up on a normal day. They had no Starter, Ranger/Marshal and one beverage cart on a Saturday afternoon. This course books tee times every 8 minutes, which is ridiculous and pure GREED. 3.5 Hours to play the front 9 and only got 16 holes in. To top it off a group of 5 (1:10pm) checked in seemingly late as they pulled up to the 1st tee box at 1:30pm (my tee time) expecting to just go off. They were told by the Golf Shop to just go up to the tee box. If you are booking 250 plus tee times (unacceptable) and a group shows up at or after their tee time, they get move to the end of the tee sheet. For $70 these guys are ripping golfers off. Do not play here.
Needs a lot of love!!!
Weather golf so expected burnt grass and car path only. The course layout is really good and enjoyable. Pace was slow but it was the first sunny day in a while. Heavy rain the night before did not help. I have played this course many times and really wish the club had the funds to maintain/repair it.
Waste of time and money
$75 a person and half the bunkers aren’t even maintained. No starter or course marshal so took us 2.5 hours to play the front 9. Went in and asked if we could get a rain check for the Back 9, they said they didn’t do that. So then just asked if we could have a bucket of range balls instead. Denied. Spent $150 in drinks, $20 doubles. Just a terrible experience.
Tee Time 45 min late
They didn't have enough carts. We didn't tee off till 45 min past our tee time. Course was ok.
Worst Pace I’ve Ever Seen
The course layout is fun, course is not bad for the time of year and green are good. The pace though, by far the worst I’ve ever seen. Took 90 minutes to play the first 3 holes because of how backed up the front was or maybe because of the way the tee times are stacked. No Marshall on the course to manage any of it. Not a great way to start a round already staked up. 12:15 tee time that tee’d off at 1245. Was at the box at 12:10 waiting in a line and that didn’t really stop till hole 13 or 14. Played close to a 6 hour round which is a shame considering how fun the course is. Would recommend to a friend or go back if the pace was figured out
Had a blast
I got a great deal on golf now and was really blown away by this course.
The bad:
- tee boxes were in terrible shape. Some places my tee wouldn’t even penetrate the ground.
- my short game😂
The good:
- this course is a blast. I can see how if maintained properly it cold be one of the best in dfw.
- greens were in amazing shape with the freezes and snow we had recently.
- my driving was on point! 🙌
Cold round
Overbooked with bad golfers that line up every shot like they are on the tour. Took 6 hours to go through 18
Hidden Gem That Needs Some TLC
First time playing but it's a fun track. Layout is challenging but fair. It was a 5 hour round on a Sat AM so I would suggest playing at less hectic times. 80% or more of the sand traps were mud. You can tell this was at one time a great private course. With some TLC and $ it could be great again. Definitely worth the drive.
I had booked a tee time for myself and had checked in ahead of time. I wasn’t given any kind of information other than “key works for any cart.” A person that had booked for the same tee time flagged me down as I was driving away and told me that he was told that we had to share a cart because we had prepaid and if we wanted individual carts we had to pay. I had no issue paying for a cart, however, the booking had said “cart included,” which I assume if I book for myself, I’m getting a cart for myself. It should’ve also been mentioned to me when I checked in that there was a potential for this to occur. I’ve never played a course where this was expected
