About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Place was very busy. T times were running late. Play was slow. Don’t know if it’s always that way.
Fun Course
I love the layout of this course. Good condition considering it’s 100degrees every day this time of year. Fun farways and different heights of green.
Great Course in need of an active Marshall
I love this track and it’s in great shape, but a slow playing five-some (yes five-some) in front of us, a two-some, wouldn’t let us play through. This lead to a 5+ hour round and ruined an otherwise great experience. this could easily be fixed with an active Marshall on the course, keeping play moving. Also disappointing was the closed snack shack at the turn on a Sunday. Typically they have drinks snacks and delicious jalapeño cheddar dogs on the grill.
Lack of important information
Tee time was 11:08. Checked in at 10:45 to be told there was a 20 minute delay due to a tournament. Did not tee off until 12:20pm and waited 15 -20 minutes every hole on front, 10-15 on back.. Did not finish until 4:45. 6 hours is ridiculous! There should have been something to alert before booking that there was a tournament. Would not have booked if I knew that.
The course was in excellent condition greens were in good shape and the sand traps . Thorn tree is in my top ten Coures in the metroplex .
I would play the course once a week if I stay in Dallas.
Great conditions, unhelpful staff and slow pace
Played @ 8:45 am, took 3 hours to get through 8 holes. Went to pro-shop to reschedule, No refund available at pro-shop and no complimentary round offered. Simply told “we can’t help you, slow pace isn’t our fault”.
Good course conditions, bad staff and pace of play
Hidden Gem
Great course to play golfers in the Desoto, Cedar Hill Texas area. The course has a nice layout and is very well maintained.
Good for my practice round
Played around noon. Only a handful of people on the course. Played as a single. Fairways in fair shape. Greens in good to very good. No marshalls on course. Man and young son driving cart on collar of the greens. This is a target golf course and will test placement skills. There are fairway slopes that make you account for the first bounce. This is a good track that will test your skills. Be ready to use the entire bag. Slower twosome invited me to play through. That dosen't happen very often. Oh, take a few more balls because the rough will make some of them disappear.
Ready to Play it Again
First time I’ve played this course. Five choices for Tees; Gold, Black, Blue, White & Red. Staff was friendly and allowed me to tee off early. Very mature course with big trees and beautiful fairways. Best Bermuda greens I’ve played in Dallas. The course felt like a 1980s layout and upon reading about it after my round, I learned it was built in 1983. Reminded me of the courses I played growing up. If you learned the game playing the country clubs in Dallas during the 80s, you’ll know what I mean. Course condition is 9/10 & greens are 10/10 I’ve already booked my next round.
