About
Thorntree opened in 1984, and while it has changed ownership multiple times over the years,it remains one of the toughest courses in the DFW area. The course features six lakes and three spring-fed creeks that spice up the layout, as well as immaculate fairways and challenging bent-grass greens.
On the front, No. 5 stands out as one of the most difficult holes – a 400 yard-plus par 4 that runs through a chute of trees and doglegs right into a green sided by a pond.
The back is a bit more difficult, which you’ll realize quickly due to the 666-yard double dogleg No. 10. The next hole is only a 382- yard par 4, but the approach is dicey into the shallow green. No. 13 is another nice hole–only 338 yards with another challenging approach into a green that’s guarded by an old thorn tree.
Getting there : From I-35 south, take the Wintergreen Road exit and turn right. Drive 4 miles to the course, and the entrance is on the right side.

Hidden Gem That Needs Some TLC
First time playing but it's a fun track. Layout is challenging but fair. It was a 5 hour round on a Sat AM so I would suggest playing at less hectic times. 80% or more of the sand traps were mud. You can tell this was at one time a great private course. With some TLC and $ it could be great again. Definitely worth the drive.
I had booked a tee time for myself and had checked in ahead of time. I wasn’t given any kind of information other than “key works for any cart.” A person that had booked for the same tee time flagged me down as I was driving away and told me that he was told that we had to share a cart because we had prepaid and if we wanted individual carts we had to pay. I had no issue paying for a cart, however, the booking had said “cart included,” which I assume if I book for myself, I’m getting a cart for myself. It should’ve also been mentioned to me when I checked in that there was a potential for this to occur. I’ve never played a course where this was expected
What Happened To This Course?
Thorntree used to be an annual stop for Our golf group of 16+ players. Since 2022, this course has slowly declined. When I played it a year ago, it was absolutely in the worse shape possible. First clubhouse was desperate need of repair/upgrades. The carts weren’t in good condition. The course was a GOAT TRACK. Fairways were dry and hard. Some greens were barely playable. Bunkers were poor too. Unfortunately I didn’t take pictures. I wouldn’t play Thorntree even if was free. I’ll need proof that it’s back to the 2018-2021 condition before I play there again.
Fun course
It is challenging, but fun course. I remember saying this is a nice course several times. Greens are very nice and moves around alot.
Beautiful!
This is my first time playing at a Club. Most of my experience comes from ranges or mini golf. I did have some friends come with me who have a few years under their belt and they’ve really enjoyed it. I am definitely considering playing more often.
Course needs work
Sand traps were horrible. Greens were in great shape. Overall, course is worth the play.

Beautiful course with very well kept greens. The sand traps were fairly wet because of recent rain, and a few of them had rocks/grass in them. Overall it was a very nice course with some challenging terrain!
Great greens. Rest of course was a mess
Great greens that putt true. Bunkers were a joke with as much grass in many of them as sand. Very rough around the edges with bare spots in many fairways but interesting layout and quality greens make it still worth the trip.
