Morris Williams Golf Course
About
The “Mo Willie,” Austin’s third municipal course, has some character: it served as the home of Harvey Penick’s legendary golf teams, two of which won NCAA Championships back when Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw graced the fairways. And it’s named after Morris Williams, Jr., one of the best golfers to ever come out of the city. Now Austin’s airport has moved south, and this difficult Leon Howard design is a bit more peaceful.
Howard’s layout requires all types of shots, and is known for its small, slightly elevated greens. The best hole on the front is the dogleg left, 540-yard No. 2, even though some would argue that the 187-yard No. 3 is one of Austin’s all-time best. It drops 50 feet from tee to green over a pond. The back side is highlighted by water holes 11-14, with both 11 and 12 requiring approaches over the wet stuff.
Getting there : From the Austin Airport, turn left on Manor Road and the clubhouse is 100 yards down the street. The entrance is on the right.

Fun despite social distancing
The course did a great job maintaining required social distancing and provided a nice round of golf. I was pleasantly surprised that pace of play was good given that I played on a perfect Saturday afternoon. The tee boxes and fairways were in good condition. Some of the greens were in rough shape, but the person I played with said that they were improving. I will certainly play the course again.
Lost their greens, in bad shape
Tee boxes are a little rough, fairways in decent shape but they lost their greens, seems to have a disease now with hardly any grass. Basically feels like you are putting on dirt with weeds.
Save your money and stay away from this course until they get the greens back.
Greens were terrible... muddy or sandy
Greens had very little grass. Mud spots everywhere along with dry patches of sandy dead grass. There was crab grass growing on the greens making it pinball around as well. If you play here it’s best to do an auto 2 putt rule.
Good course
I enjoy this course, but the conditions wasn’t as good as previous times played there. Overall, I enjoy it
Woman working on 3/1/2020 is nuts
First my scheduled tee time got moved back 45min due to a tournament, granted with a 48h notice, but still not chill on a Sunday afternoon, with no fee difference.
The head lady in the pro shop called me to the tee box 20min ahead of my scheduled tee time trying to sneak me onto a different threesome than I was scheduled to go off with (?)
Only got to hit half my range balls.
Then, she called my scheduled group to the tee box *ten minutes* before our tee time..... and 3min before our time, was yelling over the intercom for us to hurry up - it was truly stunning..
After 1, we got to the #2 tee - and there were TWO groups waiting to tee off.
5 hour round.
Good muni
As with other Austin municipal courses Morris Williams is something local golfers should be proud to call their own. Pace of play was not bad considering it was a late February 64^ Saturday. It’s very well maintained.
Great course, but extremely slow play. Round took nearly 6 hours to complete
Great course for learning
Having just taken up golf this year, I have enjoyed each and every visit to Morris Williams. Play can be slowed because of other players learning the rules and the game. Greens are in great shape and the course itself is well maintained and staffed with helpful and knowledgeable folks.
Off early to golf
Lots of people playing today. Pace was slow but course was ok for the price.
Love Austin Munies
Love playing Austin city courses. Plenty of challenges, history & quality.
Love The Course
Great layout, great conditions, great clubhouse staff.
Great Value
Recently played Morris Williams and it was a verity pleasant surprise. I have a soft spot for a great muni and this one didn’t disappoint. Green fee was less than $30 to walk 18 and our 4 some made it around in just under 4 hours after only occasionally waiting on an early Sunday morning. The layout had some nice variety in topography the course conditioning was as expected for November. Some great views of downtown highlight the course on the front 9. Staff was friendly and you can sense the passion from players that frequent the facilities. One of the very best values in all of Austin for the price, location and solid course.
Course in good shape, pace of play was horrible
Course in good shape for this time of year but the pace was brutal. Played the first 2 holes in 40 minutes, no Marshall going around on the course to control pace, had to call in to complain, get a Marshall to come out which the pace got somewhat better but still every tee box, the group in front of us was always waiting to hit on the their tee shot.
Won't be playing hear again due to pace of play. Basically I paid to hang out in a golf cart all day instead of playing a round a golf.
Great course
As usual. Fantastic course. Pace of play was a little slow. But it was a Sunday in the low 80’s. It was a golfers perfect day.
Will be back again
Fun course in great shape
I think most players would be surprised to find out this is a municipal course if they played it blind. They keep the greens and fairways in great shape. Course layout is fun especially the middle section of the back nine.
