Morris Williams Golf Course
About
The “Mo Willie,” Austin’s third municipal course, has some character: it served as the home of Harvey Penick’s legendary golf teams, two of which won NCAA Championships back when Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw graced the fairways. And it’s named after Morris Williams, Jr., one of the best golfers to ever come out of the city. Now Austin’s airport has moved south, and this difficult Leon Howard design is a bit more peaceful.
Howard’s layout requires all types of shots, and is known for its small, slightly elevated greens. The best hole on the front is the dogleg left, 540-yard No. 2, even though some would argue that the 187-yard No. 3 is one of Austin’s all-time best. It drops 50 feet from tee to green over a pond. The back side is highlighted by water holes 11-14, with both 11 and 12 requiring approaches over the wet stuff.
Getting there : From the Austin Airport, turn left on Manor Road and the clubhouse is 100 yards down the street. The entrance is on the right.

Great course
Fairways are in great shape right now, greens are as well. Overall, I would choose Mo Willy over similar courses Clay and Kizer, it’s cheaper and better maintained year round.
Best Shape I’ve Seen it in 15 Years
This course has always been a favorite because of the layout. The fairways have been excellent all year, but as always the greens have been in disrepair. I played today after the City Championship finished out there and was shocked at the excellent condition of the greens. They rolled true and at a decent speed and I didn’t notice a single bald spot. I’ve been very critical of the quality of the greens here for years so I was happy to see how great they were. Note: they are aerating on August 12, so get out while the gettings good!
Great lay out
First time to play this course, wont be the last. Started out with friendly staff. The course’ is in good shape, greens a little slow. Will definitely play here again.
Worst Greens in Austin
I’ve played Mo Willy many times over the past 5 years as it is the closest course to my home. I’ve always understood that it is a muni and I’ve never expected the most well kept greens on earth. My past couple of rounds however are beyond what is acceptable. They were seeded incorrectly last winter, and the greens have continued to fall in condition since that time. The staff is not helpful to alert players of the poor condition of the greens, even when they are aerated or over seeded. The greens now are mostly sand, full of holes, burn spots, weeds, and cut lines. Not fun at all the play on. Additionally, the greens staff just dumps the plugs around the fairway. So lazy. I’m taking my business elsewhere until I get some confidence that Morris Williams cares about play conditions.
Morris Williams play
The layout is very fair, but challenging. Course is well groomed. The greens are in need of repair.
Too Many Cart Path Holes
The course is in great condition, except for a few greens. Fairways are nice. Pace of play good. On this occasion however there were too many cart path only and I don’t know why. They weren’t wet.
Bumpy green .
I like this course . Fun layout and close to downtown. But , green was very bad shape. Patches of brown and sandy, bumpy . Also bunker were terrible.
I may not go back for a while .
What happened to the greens?
Course was green with nice fairways. The greens were pretty bad. Not only had bare spots but most had large areas with sparse and bumpy areas. Had two call 2 putt good on those greens. The areas between hole 4 and 5 have grass and weeds that are too overgrown.
Just a nice muni
Course has great layout. Love making dogleg on 5 and seeing the skyline of the city just pure. Greens need to grow in but sup still has them rolling fine and receptive. Definitely recommend this course. Nice elevation good condition for budget they have I'll def be back
Fun day
I'm a muni pass holder but hadn't been out to Mo Willy all year. It was good to get out and play 18 last week before the torrential weekend rains came. Played from the tips (been awhile) with some good sticks and had a good time. The conditions of tees and fairways were good and the grass has greened up nicely. The greens are a little behind. They didn't overseed the greens (like Lions did) and I think they could use some warmth for the bermuda to get some growth on them. I'm optimistic by next month they are more consistent. That said, I did make a lot of putts out there, so I can't complain.
Mo Willy is awesome!
Morris Williams is an Austin treasure! Gorgeous layout!
The greens are rough right now, and the fairways are in spring time condition but this golf course is a terrific play! Defines “Hill Country” with all kinds of elevation changes. A spectacular and wide variety of trees. Great views of downtown Austin. A really excellent play!
Rude staff
Staff was always rude whenever I went there. Played there several times, and can’t take it anymore. Won’t be back until I know they have hired new clubhouse staff.
