Morris Williams Golf Course
About
The “Mo Willie,” Austin’s third municipal course, has some character: it served as the home of Harvey Penick’s legendary golf teams, two of which won NCAA Championships back when Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw graced the fairways. And it’s named after Morris Williams, Jr., one of the best golfers to ever come out of the city. Now Austin’s airport has moved south, and this difficult Leon Howard design is a bit more peaceful.
Howard’s layout requires all types of shots, and is known for its small, slightly elevated greens. The best hole on the front is the dogleg left, 540-yard No. 2, even though some would argue that the 187-yard No. 3 is one of Austin’s all-time best. It drops 50 feet from tee to green over a pond. The back side is highlighted by water holes 11-14, with both 11 and 12 requiring approaches over the wet stuff.
Getting there : From the Austin Airport, turn left on Manor Road and the clubhouse is 100 yards down the street. The entrance is on the right.

Slow greens
Rain caused cart path only, but still able to play, pretty dry!
Well maintained
Nice course. My only issue would be the driving range mats were like hitting off concrete. Enjoyed the round.
Good value
Nice course layout. Staff very friendly. Course was rather brown and the greens were very dry and lumpy. I’m not from Texas so I don’t know if that’s normal for this time of year.
Fun, Open Course
I really enjoyed playing this course because it is a full 72 with decent yardage, but is nice and open, allowing for all experience levels to enjoy.
$13 Dollars’s Worth at MoTown
Great value.
Greens decent.
Fairways kinda rough and wet, but to be expected for the wet winter we’ve had.
Motown is a venerable old track that I still enjoy!
Drizzly day, but good Round
Slow greens due to rain and not cut day of play. But course is in good shape overall, and crews were re-sodding some areas. Always a good value round!
Good greens
For the price, this is a great, interesting course. The greens are above average to really good. This is important because they were terrible in late summer. Did a lot of work and resoding.
Slo Willy
It's been about a year since I'd been out to Mo as I'd heard the greens were in bad shape. With Lions closed for an outing I gave it a shot on a gorgeous afternoon.
First the good: The greens are pretty solid. Still a little bumpy but no complaints. Also, given the steady rain we've had in September, the fairways and rough are grown in well. I don't think I've ever played Mo Willy with such thick rough. You could lose a ball just a few yards off line. It's definitely different than the normal hard pan in September.
But all that aside I just can't for the life of me understand why the ATX munis allow fivesomes and rangers simply never prod them along. What would have otherwise been a delightful Thursday afternoon turned into a slog as a fiveball that seemed intent on easter-egg hunting on every hole slowed us down to 5-plus hours. I really didn't think we'd be chasing the sun teeing off at 2;45.
I'd play so much more twilight golf if I knew I'd be able to get around at a decent clip. Such a shame.
Birthday Golf
Son and I have played this course 4 times now and the course greens are now in top shape...Beautiful layout and friendly staff. I drive up from S.A. to play and it's worth the drive.
Mo Willy Gets a Mulligan
"Moe Willy" was once the neglected east-side course, so close to the airport that from the 10th green you could count the tread on descending planes' tires, and had to yell "I THINK YOU'RE AWAY!" at the top of your lungs because the jet engines were exceeding 130 decibels. About 15 years ago they moved the airport, and like the surrounding community, Moe Willy has been on the comeback cart path ever since. They built a new clubhouse complete with white rocking chairs on a long southern-style veranda that overlooks the course. They also upgraded the sprinkler system, and the fairways are now much more even.
The staff is friendly and down-to-earth. There is a reassuring familiarity to the place.
The course itself is intriguing. It has a lot of elevation changes, and rare is the hole where the green is not well-above or well-below the level of the tee box. The 9th and the 18th holes are practically twins, but besides them each hole is unique. So if it's variety you want this course is for you. Keep the ball in the fairways and the course is straight forward. Miss fairways and the quirkiness of east Austin terrain, weeds, gullies, rocks, slopes and woods will have you screaming "NO MOE!"
Great course ! Just waiting for it to get back in shape.
Mo Willy is a true gem in the middle of Austin. I have loved playing this course since walking 18 with my dad growing up. I continue to play it a few times a month. My last round was rough, not playing wise but just course conditions. The greens are under repair, but you can tell they are doing everything possible to get them back to 100%. Some general maintenance to a few holes would do wonders. However, I can tell they are getting things ready for a great falls season of golf. This a a great course. A MUST play in Austin. More challenging than any other muny in Austin. Greens will be better soon. Call ahead and ask for a honest opinion. May cut you a deal. Enjoy !
Love Mo Willie
Wonderful tract & layout. Been here many times and enjoy it every time. Greens were a little rough this round but still had a wonderful experience.
Greens are Healing
Other Prior reviews noted the poor conditions of the greens. Too bad. The greens are not restored yet by certainly the effort being made is evident. For an amature out to enjoy the game I found them not good but adequate. The fairways are in great condition. The tee boxes are in very good condition. Making one put on any green is not easy but making two is realistic. Go play.
