Morris Williams Golf Course
About
The “Mo Willie,” Austin’s third municipal course, has some character: it served as the home of Harvey Penick’s legendary golf teams, two of which won NCAA Championships back when Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw graced the fairways. And it’s named after Morris Williams, Jr., one of the best golfers to ever come out of the city. Now Austin’s airport has moved south, and this difficult Leon Howard design is a bit more peaceful.
Howard’s layout requires all types of shots, and is known for its small, slightly elevated greens. The best hole on the front is the dogleg left, 540-yard No. 2, even though some would argue that the 187-yard No. 3 is one of Austin’s all-time best. It drops 50 feet from tee to green over a pond. The back side is highlighted by water holes 11-14, with both 11 and 12 requiring approaches over the wet stuff.
Getting there : From the Austin Airport, turn left on Manor Road and the clubhouse is 100 yards down the street. The entrance is on the right.

Golfer Reviews
Nice course, but staff left me cold.
I had intended to walk 18 holes, but it was hot & humid today. A health problem forced me to quit after 5 holes.
To my dismay, the staff wouldn't consider giving me even a PARTIAL refund or even a "rain check"....
While that may be a fair policy, it still seems a little...unfriendly and cold-hearted. No empathy.
I'll never play there again.
Sub-par Greens
I am really shocked at how poor the greens were. Austin has been hit with rain all year and the greens still had patches and dirt. We did play on a wet day, so they were unable to mow the greens until the afternoon, but there is no excuse for them to be patchy.
The overall course was lush. I really enjoy the layout and the fairway to rough cut. Overall, it is still my favorite muni, but it was a struggle to shoot a decent score on the greens.
Water water
On hole six a storm came through putting the course under water. All the brooks over-flowed and the bridges were underwater. We went for a rain check and they refused to grant one even though the course was unplayable. The greens before the storm were in good condition.
Pace was Slow
The course was in good shape but it was a very slow pace of play.
Mo Willie
DO NOT, DO NOT, hit into the first cut off the fairway, you WILL NOT find your ball. Grass should be cut better
Great municipal course for the price
Course was in excellent condition considering it was raining all week., great facilities. Good pace of play. Would golf here again next time I'm in town
Nice municipal course
Course is in good shape, I just wish staff would show more flexibility if someone is hoping to move up his tee time and the course is clearly not "book solid". I am not sure they like it when people use golfnow. Also, apparently they have a policy (first time I hear something like that) of not booking tee times for singles if you call. No idea why
Great greens as we transition into summer
I've played them all and this course has the overall best greens. They aren't crazy fast but they are full and smooth. Every real golfer knows the greens are what need to be on point in order to create a good round of golf.
Favorite course
This is one of my favorite course here in Austin. Played Saturday and the pace was great, greens were good, and the fairways were in good condition
Morris Willisms
It was fun but windy. In spite of the wind we had a great time.
Back to the New?
I have played Morris Williams Golf Course when I lived in the Austin area from 2002 - 2006. At that time it was your typical muni with a dated clubhouse/pro shop, marginal driving range, and marginal turf conditions. As a former resident of the area and friends still in the area, I keep track of Austin golf. A couple years back I read that the City of Austin Parks and Rec were remodeling Mo Willie. I have been traveling to/through Austin for business, so I had to check it out.
The routing and conditions of the course have changed very little from the past. Although the overall turf was not too bad either. However, the greens were pretty good for the time of year I was playing. The rebuild of the greens have some good undulations and some tricky breaks, but it looks as though they will putt true when they come in this Spring and Summer. This day they were kind of slow, but what can you expect coming out of Winter.
Overall, with the price and the layout Mo Willie is a pretty good municipal course. There are a couple quirky holes, #11 and #13, but past that it's still fun.
Always fun
I always wait for the deal and book as a single. Not only do I enjoy the course it keeps me coming back. I have only been playing about 6mos but MoWilly gives me the ability to play 4-7 times a month and still be in my budget. Thanks MoWilly and staff.
Great Course!!!
Played several times and have never been disappointed.
just go play it!
very interesting visual layout, and a ton of fun to play!
nice little muni
mo willy is a solid muni track. it is fairly open, which makes it playable for any skill level, but there is a fair bit of elevation change and the greens are tricky enough to challenge better players too.
there is a great view of the skyline coming up the fairway on hole 7.
for the price, it'd be hard to find a better place to play.
pleasant surprise
I heard from a friend about as month ago indicating Morris Williams was in great shape after the $5m investment. It's totally true. The course is in great shape. #bestgreensinaustin
First time since Overhauled
First time to play since the overhaul. Club house looks good. Some changes on the course are good. Glad I was with someone that had played and knew of the changes. Nice to see grass on the fairways. Greens were over seeded and wet in areas, but it is winter. Traps actually had sand - pure white sand. Player don't rake but what is new.
There was a tourney in front of use and play was extremely slow on the front. Had to wait on the back couple of times.
