Morris Williams Golf Course
About
The “Mo Willie,” Austin’s third municipal course, has some character: it served as the home of Harvey Penick’s legendary golf teams, two of which won NCAA Championships back when Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw graced the fairways. And it’s named after Morris Williams, Jr., one of the best golfers to ever come out of the city. Now Austin’s airport has moved south, and this difficult Leon Howard design is a bit more peaceful.
Howard’s layout requires all types of shots, and is known for its small, slightly elevated greens. The best hole on the front is the dogleg left, 540-yard No. 2, even though some would argue that the 187-yard No. 3 is one of Austin’s all-time best. It drops 50 feet from tee to green over a pond. The back side is highlighted by water holes 11-14, with both 11 and 12 requiring approaches over the wet stuff.
Getting there : From the Austin Airport, turn left on Manor Road and the clubhouse is 100 yards down the street. The entrance is on the right.

Golfer Reviews
greens were sandy
The greens were in very bad shape. very sandy and nearly no grass on them
Fun Day
Had a great day playing but my game wasn't that great. This was operator error and had nothing to do with the conditions of the course.
Greens
The greens were almost dead-I was surprised they charged me full fees for the round. Will not play there again until I check out the greens first.
The staff is amazing!
Greens were much better than they were a couple of weeks ago but still have a ways to go. At least they were rolling true. In all fairness most central Texas courses are reseeding this time of year. First played this course in 1972 with 3 golf clubs. Its come a long way. Still one of my favorites. Hats off to the wonderful staff, Beth Doug and all.
Slow play
Not only is the play very slow, but you need a hammer to drive the tee into the ground. I"m not talking one or two tee boxes I'm talking every tee box.. My wife couldnt get the tee into the ground at all. The new lay out is nice but like most of the other Austin city courses, a good grounds keeper is needed.or they are going to lose it. The fairways are normal Texas pasture grass, and the greens are whatever grass and in very poor shape. I would not play this course if it were not a Hot Deal on Gold Now.
Greens are in bad shape
Course as a whole is ok, but the greens right now are like putting on mud. I understand all of Austin's golf courses aren't in great shape, but with all the rain we got this winter I was expecting them to be a little better. There were also a lot of pin locations that were pretty unfair, on the side of some of the swales, etc. I like the undulation, but good putts were heavily penalized on a few holes
Worst Greens Ever Played!
This course should not even be open. The greens have ZERO grass. I am not exaggerating. ZERO grass. You putt on mud. Ridiculous.
CAPLHP775
First off for having been closed for a year for renovations, I was not impressed . Actually I was depressed and disappointed. The greens were terrible, looking more like browns. Lastly the staff should have had the courtesy to point out the bad greens they didn't.
great course
great course. I liked it. First time playing there. Was in /austin the weekend. Must have rained the night before a few green were damp, otherwise it was great. /woud definitely play there again when i come back. new /clubhouse

Greens
Are thinning. Recent freeze in the area didn't do them any favors.
Morris Williams in Jan.!
Not having played the course in 6 years, it was great to play an 'old-friend'. The grass was dormant but the greens were still fast as I remembered. The course was in really good shape for Jan., and I was more than happy w/ the deal on golfnow.com.
Challenging enough without making it tough
The weather has deteriorated the field of play and the greens. The greens had very little grass on them and the fairways were rough to play from. The people i paired with liked playing the course and seemed to really enjoy the course and play there often. the cart girl was running late but when she was on the course she went by often.
Worth the wait
Morris Williams has always been my favorite municipal course. After a long year of renovations I was happy to be able to sneak in a round between cold fronts. The course was in great shape considering the cold, rain, and even snow we've had. The pace of play was incredibly fast as the whole round took a little over 4 hours, and that's playing behind a 5-some. For anybody looking for a challenging muni course at a great price, I always recommend Morris Williams.
Perfect Day to Play
Love the renovations to the course, the tee boxes are in great shape. White sand in the traps and the fairways were in pretty good shape considering it was the middle of winter. The only thing to watch for are the greens, they have a lot of undulation and the ball breaks more than you would think. very tricky to get a line. Over all the course is in excellent condition and would continue to play here.
Best Muni in Austin
Pretty open from the tee, the challenge is the greens which can be tricky at times. It's a great walking course with a nice variety of holes. Of all the Austin City courses if I had to pick one as my home course this would be it.
Good ol' Mo Willy
I play this course more than any other one in town due to its mix of convenience, value and challenge. Since the renovations in 2012 it's a lot more fair and in better shape. Good place to practice and a pleasant walking course that's not too demanding. I like it more than Kizer mostly due to the nice roll in the land and hole variety.
