Riverside Golf Course

Pretty nice for a municipal course. Super friendly staff. No ranger to keep pace .

Front nine rough. Back nine was more like it. Cart girl nice. Clubhouse food was closed at 4. Odd...saw a boa constrictor in a tree.Lots of deer at sunset.

This place may not be a five-star resort, but it’s a true hidden gem if you keep your expectations in check. Conveniently located in the heart of the area, it’s a short course that’s surprisingly fun to play.

The fairways and tee boxes were impressively green for June in Texas... that alone is worth a shout-out. While the bunkers and greens could use some TLC, the overall experience was still very enjoyable.

Tee times are easy to book, the clubhouse is well-kept, and the staff was welcoming (minus a less-than-friendly marshal).

All in all, I’ll definitely be back for another round.

I've played this course a few times now and what I've learned is that this course puts a premium on the following:

- Being in position off the tee. You have to hit your drive to certain spots on the fairway, otherwise you will be blocked for your approach by the many trees that line every hole of this course.

- Keeping the ball in play on approach. It's not a long course, and one of its main protections are that there are no bailout areas around the greens. Chances are that if you miss your approach wide or long, you're making a big number because the ball is out of bounds or you have to get up and down over bunkers & mounds or with tree impediments. It's better to miss short because you'll have a pitch from the fairway or a bunker shot (and the bunkers on this course are not hard with excessive slopes or lips).

- Controlling your shot from tee to green. You're forced to play with control of speed, bounce, and certain shot types because of fast greens/many trees including near the teebox/doglegs/blind teeshots.

- Ball pace and speed around the greens since they generally play fast and hard where the only forgiveness is if you hit it to an uphill spot--it's very easy to hit a shot or putt and it will roll away a crazy amount. Also be aware that the greens will not roll true and some will have ground under repair with sand or bare spots.

- Knowing distances. I don't have a rangefinder and the distance markers on this course in the tee/fairway are not consistent. It's very easy to put tee shots and approach shots in bad areas because you have the wrong club and it's not easy to recover from out of position on this course.

You definitely have to think on this course and play with care, otherwise you will post big numbers and get frustrated.

Fun course layout! Great practice course and great value for money. Some greens are in rough condition unfortunately. Difficult to know if those greens fell victim to angry players or poor green management. All in all a fun course that is wide open, with limited chances of losing your ball anywhere. Will be back next weekend.
