Salado Del Rio at Fort Sam Houston Golf Course

About
Fort Sam Houston is home to two 18-hole courses, Salado Del Rio and La Lorna. The Salado del Rio course is the more scenic of the two, offering spectacular views of the rustic countryside. The historic facility boasts some famous players including Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer. The layout is also more difficult than the other championship course at the club due to the presence of numerous blind shots and water hazards. Both Fort Sam Houstan golf courses feature tight, tree-lined fairways and greens that are medium in both size and speed. In addition to the two golf courses, Fort Sam Houston also houses extensive practice facilities including a practice chipping green and lighted driving range.

Nice course especially for beginners
Not too challenging, some carry holes.
Greens were in good shape except 18(patchy areas).
A little slow but ran true
60s-styles scraggly muni course!
Old course layout in need of a update. Fairways are okay but patchy. Greens are patchy with overgrowth on some areas. Reminds me of landa park before the shutdown and remake. Cheap on golf now. Only great thing. No bev cart . The cart path is broken and bumpy and there’s potholes on the course. All I can say it’s better than Rebeca Creek.
Staff is rude
Course is rough and there’s been a single staff member that’s been rude every time. 12 mins early for a tee time and he said I should get there earlier. Another time I asked to slide back a spot as the course was backed up on hole 1 and there were 3 open tee times to follow, he refused and had me play with a trio at a snail pace.
Thank Goodness for the trees!!
Went at the hottest time of the day in August and was so glad there were trees. I really enjoyed the course and loved the lay out. it had it all-bunkers, water and trees. I will go back!
Overall bad experience
Showed up an hour early and there was nobody on the 1st tee box for the hour we were there and they wouldn’t allow us to start saying that was the tee time you paid for and you have to wait. Then they paired us with 2 other guys when there was no one on the course, instead of letting me and my partner play on our own. Ended up taking 5 hours to play because of who the guys they paired us with. There was only hot water in the course and the greens were burned and in awful shape. Would not recommend anyone to play there and will not go back.
Tee time not in system.
Booked the hot deal for 4 players. We each drove about 45 minutes to get there. When we arrived we were told that the tee times didn’t show on there sheet. Was then told we couldn’t play because they had no openings for the day but saw at least 20 minute gaps between people teeing off. Sounds like they are dropping GolfNow from their booking services also so guess I can write this place off of our rotation.
Not able to play
Did not get to play the course. I booked online but when I showed up the shop told me they didn't have me in the system. They explained to me that they have been trying to get themselves off of Golf Now for years now since this is a recurring issue.
When we got there they said we need to call before we book because they were not to be on golfnow even though it shows up on your app. I don't think we should have to call if it is on your app. Maybe you need to contact them. Besides this the course was in great shape.
Do not Book
While the course is a good value for the price and has some good looking holes, the reason I am not recommending to book it is because the do not want to honor tee times booked on Golf Now.
I got lucky, but the guy at the counter had to confirm with the course manager in order for me to get on.
Golf Now dropped the ball
Showed up to the course and our tee time reservation was not honored because the reservation never went thru so we did not get to play. Waste a whole morning . I need a refund
Great spot for a great value
Been playing here for years and this last go round was the best I have ever seen the greens. Lush and manicured that rolled true. This course is a great track that has a friendly staff and you can really cruise through 18 pretty quickly. Would recommend to anyone wanting a hassle free experience with some challenging holes.
Fort Sam has makeshift course
What a mess. They had us teeing off on 15 or 14 or something. Temporary score cards due to renovation. They should just close one , fix, then work on another. Not a good experience. In addition, if I didn’t have my email confirmation, they would not let me play.
