Salado Del Rio at Fort Sam Houston Golf Course

About
Fort Sam Houston is home to two 18-hole courses, Salado Del Rio and La Lorna. The Salado del Rio course is the more scenic of the two, offering spectacular views of the rustic countryside. The historic facility boasts some famous players including Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer. The layout is also more difficult than the other championship course at the club due to the presence of numerous blind shots and water hazards. Both Fort Sam Houstan golf courses feature tight, tree-lined fairways and greens that are medium in both size and speed. In addition to the two golf courses, Fort Sam Houston also houses extensive practice facilities including a practice chipping green and lighted driving range.

Reviews
Not bad
Both courses had only nine holes each open .. no starter out there so people were teeing off when they want to .. it was a disaster... at 10:30 no ice available .. asked for ice they said it's all they have .. vending machine was your only option ... but for the price you can't go wrong .. just bring your own cooler with ice ... I would play there again unless the price increases
Not bad for the price
This is no ice before playing .. nothing but a vending machine for snacks ..your tee time me nothing .. no starter or any course management overall not bad for the price
Worst golf course I've played at in a long time
I am a laid back guy and almost never leave a review but this is a exception. My tee time was at 1030am, when I got to the course the front desk informed me that they are doing maintenance on the course and that I would be starting on hole 10 and playing 10 through 18, then play 1,2,3 and back to hole 13 through 18. I didn't get a discount for the inconvenience of the maintenance of the course(which was a red flag). I get to hole 10 and there is 9 people waiting to tee off. I called the front desk and asked why there was so many people waiting to tee off and the front desk informed me they are finishing a tournament and I will be next. 30 mins later I called the front desk back to ask for a refund/raincheck and they told me no since I set up my tee time through golfnow. When I finally was able to tee off I had to constantly wait 5 minutes every time I hit the ball because the course was so overbooked with golfers. I ended up only playing 9 holes because it took almost 4 hours to finish 9 holes. There was no marshal or anything to control the flow of the game. Really disappointed in the overall experience.
Hard pan everywhere
Course is being renovated so the open holes are in major need of repair. Little to no water is applied to fairways so the likelihood of hitting off grass is slim. Won’t play again until significant rainfall because it’s obvious they will not water the fairways.
Great Military Base Golf Course!
I have really enjoyed playing both golf courses at Fort Sam Houston lately (Salado Del Rio and La Loma)! Both golf courses are in really good shape and love taking turns playing both of these courses! I highly recommend giving these golf courses a try if haven't already done so, you won't be disappointed!
Had a blast!
First time there. Got paired up with another solo and I couldn’t have asked for a better golf buddy. The course was in great shape which made the day that much better. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town!
Good golf
fairways were muddy due to rain. Overall would go back here. Staff wasn't the most welcoming when we checked in and got cart keys. Asked where 1st hole was and young guy just pointed and said that way. (it wasn't actually that way). Overall would come back here again.
Nice Course
I played for the first time here. This is very good course and the layout is nice.
I will go back again!
Great track for the money
Excellent valued golf course. Fast pace of play. Course in very good shape for mid august. Greens kept in good shape. I enjoy the layout of each course. Would definitely recommend. Great value for the money. I’m
Salado
The course is coming back after much mismanagement. AF leadership seems to have hurt this course. Much better shape before JBSA took over.
Disappointed
It's been a year since I played there. I couldn't believe how bad the course conditions are. Fortunately, the greens were still in good shape but the rest of the course had become a dirt track.
Salado
Excellent Staff in all areas of course, pro shop and restaurant. Love the layout of Salado, the course looks great just wish the greens were in better shape and a little faster but from my understanding they are working on that. We always enjoy ourselves playing here. Thank you guys!
Beautiful Course
My son and I really enjoyed this course. With a total count of 9 balls lost, so can clearly make this as a winner. Greens were awesome.
