Pasatiempo Golf Club
About
This classic golf course is arguably one of the top venues in the country. Pasatiempo was certainly one of designer Alister MacKenzie's favorites. The legendary architect made his home off the par-5 sixth hole and regarded the difficult, uphill 16th as one of the best par 4s ever designed by him or anyone else. To make it even better, the golf club embarked on a two-year restoration project headed up by Tom Doak. The result was nothing less than spectacular as bunkers and greens were to returned original specifications with modern turf and drainage technology. With its great design and elevation changes, Pasatiempo Golf Club plays much longer than its yardage and will test good players. The back nine is particularly strong, perhaps as good as any in the country.

The par-4 14th. A great example of what makes this course special. Notice the hillocks and hummocks on the left side of the fairway. Otherwise, this would be a mundane hole, but this addition collects tee shots and makes the approach interesting. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

Makenzie called the par-4 16th the greatest two-shotter in the world, largely due to the three-tiered green. No room for error long, short or right. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

From behind the 11th green, one of the most difficult par 4s I've ever played. Requires two-to-three clubs up on approach. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

Great Day of Golf
Pasatiempo lived up to its hype. The staff was friendly and helpful. The course was in fabulous shape. The greens were incredibly fast and difficult. It's a must-play
Great experience
Staff was friendly and helpful, layout is great and the course, greens and tee boxes were in excellent shape
An Alister MacKenzie Gem You Can and Should Play
I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play Mackenzie's masterpiece Crystal Downs here in northern Michigan a few times every summer. I have also played his design at the University of Michigan several times. It's safe to say that I am a huge fan of his work. So a tee time at Pasatiempo was a must during our trip to the area to watch the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Articles I read beforehand referred to the back nine as one of the best nine hole stretches of golf holes in the world. As I walked down the fourth fairway, I thought to myself, how can it get any better than this?
The recent renovations done by Tom Doak, from what I understand, really brought back a lot of the original feel of the course. I must say, the bunkering certainly looks like classic MacKenzie...the rounded shapes are beautiful to look at and enjoyed most when your ball avoids them.
My wife and I walked the course; I carried and she pushed a cart. The elevation changes are significant and she grew tired soon after we made the turn. She doesn't have the chance to play much golf and accordingly, found the course to be challenging, which added to her fatigue.
As an avid walker, I too was well aware of the fact that we had walked after the round, but it is the best way to enjoy this beautiful course. The greens putted well with speeds that were probably close to what the design intended. After all, there are plenty of greens that demonstrate MacKenzie's love for undulation.
Course conditions, speed of play, and overall courtesy of the staff were all wonderful. It's a course that is worth the price and if I ever return to the area, I will certainly play here again. With any luck at all, it will be following a round at his Cypress Point masterpiece.
Way to expensive for a golf course under renovation
7 temporary tees
Contractor everywhere
$200 !!!
Probably ok when the renovation will be over
Pasatiempo excels
Pasatiempo offers a supreme challenge to everyone who plays there. The back nine is superb and very difficult. The views are stunning and beautiful everywhere. Currently 4 tee boxes on the front nine are being redone which makes these holes shorter and easier. Lots of hills make walking tough for seniors. For the discounted price I paid using Golfnow this was a great bargain and a wonderful day.
Amazing course from tee to green. I heard a lot of reviews about the greens being super hard. I didn't find that to be true. Maybe I was just hitting it on the right side of the greens. They are fast but receptive to shots . Staff was friendly. I have been in the Bay Area for 20 years. Finally got out there to play and I will be going back for sure.
Great course. Very challenging
Pasatiempo is one of those courses that if you get a chance to play, do so. It is wide open on some holes, but very challenging on others. The greens were very tough but fair. The staff was very friendly. Overall, a great experience all around.
Wonderful golf experience
Can only afford to play once a year or so but this place keeps us coming back even when the fees are almost $300. Course conditions are super and the design is unparalleled.
Quality Mackenzie design
Stunning views and an overall amazing layout. Pricey but it's a bucket list worthy experience. Greens were punched a couple weeks ago so greens weren't in optimal condition. Challenging layout that requires careful approach shots. Would love to play here again when it's in prime condition. Members I met at the clubhouse were really nice and welcoming, staff was great as well.
Excellent Clasic Course
Was told by a good friend of mine that this course was a "must play" when he heard that I was going to be out in N. California. It was an excellent experience on a perfect sunny, calm day. Course conditions were near perfect due to some recent rains. If you appreciate old, classic layouts, this is a must play!
Nice, but not again
The staff and restaurants are fantastic, the views aren't that bad either and it plays longer than it looks.
Beautiful day on a very tough course
This is a beautiful course with spectacular views nestled into an area shaded a bit from the wind making it much warmer than the surrounding courses. It is beautifully kept and blends well into the natural geography. First rate all the way. Lots of sand and greens with many contours make it quite a challenge, but if any course around is worth the rather significant greens fees, this is it.
Impeccable
Everything about this course is outstanding. The layout is second to none, every hole is a stunner with superb bunkering and incredible greens. The staff was great, the clubhouse is not a work of art but it does the job. The conditioning was incredible even after getting rained on for three straight days. Do yourself a favor and play this course if you have the chance. I'd put it up there with the bandon properties in my book.
Low service for a 200 dollar round
I wasn't told until Check in that the cart was an extra $30.00.
Staff was not friendly.
Greens were disappointingly slow.
Nowhere near a $200.00 course...
Not for the faint hearted
I am an avid golfer who lived in Santa Cruz 30 years ago and played Pasatimepo before it was renovated. It's a beautiful course, but you may forget that as your well-struck ball rolls off the green into a deep sand trap. The greens are undulating throughout, and it is difficult to ensure that your ball will stay on the green. It was a humbling experience but, in sum, worth it.
