Heron Lakes Golf Club - Greenback Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Club is home to two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the Great Blue Course and the Greenback Course. Both utilize the rugged natural terrain in different ways, offering challenges that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. The Greenback Course is a versatile parkland layout that is gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. It is a less demanding design than the Great Blue but it still has plenty of challenges in store. There are 86 bunkers framing the elevated greens and six ponds come into play throughout however the mature trees present the most prominent threat. The par 3s on this golf course can be especially tough. The more challenging elements are nicely balanced by large, inviting greens and generous landing areas.

Great layout, challenging
We came from Texas to play here. The course layout was the best part of the course. Very challenging and different hole layouts made it interesting. The greens were very fast which was also was a great opportunity to try to score well. I would recommend this to other golfers for the price.
Nice Place to play
I generally have Heron in my top 2 or 3 courses in the Portland area. The soil is good, not all areas get watered, and Bunkers need NOT TO BE!
Pace of place was poor because other group were horrible and we constantly had to find their tee shots for them.
My son lost his wedge and NO ONE turned it in. C’mon people!
Nice course
Course is in good shape, moderate difficulty. Fun to play.
Decent course
Not a long course. It does require you to hit a lot of fades off the tee. Not my forte so a bit of a challenge. Per usual I landed in the fairway bunker on #5 located on the left. Not a drawers course. That said, the par 5s are reachable in 2 so that makes it fun
In good shape
The greens were pretty good shape, nit too fast.
The fairways were mowed well - the ball ran quite well
Pace of play was good, started on time!
It was a great day, but slow pace of play.
It had been awhile since I played at Heron Lakes. But it was a great day, but the pace of play was slow.
Not great experience,
Booked ttime via Golfnow Hot Deal paid for 18 holes but when I check in, Jim the Pro shop guy said i booked only for 9 holes, i showed him email receipt but still would not honor me to play 18 holes. Turned out, the twosome i paired with has the same problem with the pro shop guy. He made them pay extra to play 18 holes. It was my first time to play at the course and i guess they lost returning customer.
Enjoyed it
It was my first time playing the Greenback. The pace became slow on the back 9 and still played right about 4 hours. It’s pretty open course but your shot selection is important. I’ll play this more often.
Back 18, the Blue
Great course for the money. Carts were in good condition. There is only 1 marker out in the fairways. I'm used to seeing a red, white, Blue marker to help know my distance to the pin. I had to kick on my TeeOff App and set this course to view the map and my distances. The tee boxes didn't have any display of the hole, distance, par, etc.... I had a good time, and for $40w/cart it's a nice course.
Lot of duck goose poop.
The course is covered in goose poop! I know it is is a city of PDX course and they dont want to discourage the goose, but they need to do something, My shoes and cart were covered in poop.
I am surprised no one has gottens sick from playing on the course.
