Heron Lakes Golf Club - Greenback Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Club is home to two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the Great Blue Course and the Greenback Course. Both utilize the rugged natural terrain in different ways, offering challenges that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. The Greenback Course is a versatile parkland layout that is gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. It is a less demanding design than the Great Blue but it still has plenty of challenges in store. There are 86 bunkers framing the elevated greens and six ponds come into play throughout however the mature trees present the most prominent threat. The par 3s on this golf course can be especially tough. The more challenging elements are nicely balanced by large, inviting greens and generous landing areas.

Terrible Greens
Of all the public courses in the Portland/Vancouver area this one would rank close to the bottom. Who in the middle of peak season, summer/heat wave sands their greens? Just plain stupid. Ball marks every where. They don’t care because the sheep keep paying . Their location is ideal for the densely populated area of Portland. For the price it would be better to play Tri-Mountain in Ridgefield, Wa. Greens are far superior to this dirty, dumpy course.
Par 3's need fixed
No sand at the par 3's, It was like a battlefield
Couldnt find a good place to stand
Please send someone out daily to put sand in the divots
Greenback in AUG
The course was in great condition. More challenging then I remember. I usually play the Great Blue. There were a lot of great holes, trouble all over. Many fairway bunkers. Some of the iron play to the greens was picturesque, two tier greens, lots of bunkers. Nice. Like any public golf course, some of the greens had many unfixed divots. Tee time was 2.30, play was fast. 4.15. I wish i knew the course better. You could hit less than driver on a lot of holes. I will be back. Thanks.
Full house...
But fairways and greens were very very nice... At great price!
Warm Day
We’ve had a stretch of warm weather and the fairways ran fast. The greens in general were firm making it tough to get at some of the pins, yet a few greens were receptive to approach shots and would hit and stick.
All in all the course played well and is a fair test. 18 holes in 4:15
Nice course
Very nice course condition in June. can't wait to play again here. Thank you
June 1st
Great conditions, fast paced and a beautiful day made this a fantastic day to be retired! Bird crap not an issue on Greenback for a nice change. Thanks Heron lakes.
Nice course
Layout, fairway and green were good.
Some halls are challenging and it was really fun to play here
Great Spring Condition
The course was in really good shape for mid April since there has been much less rain than usual the last several weeks. The greens were fast and in great condition. The fairways were firm with plenty of roll. Getting to and from the course was a breeze with the light traffic these days.
Goose Poop
I you like to spend hours cleaning your cart and not be allowed in the house before taking your pants off, by all means play here. If not don’t bother. The entire course was covered by goose droppings.
RTJ Jr Course, Very Good design, but takes a back seat to its Brother
A RTJ Jr design course, very good, but the maintenance is substandard compared to its Brother Great Blue. More Maintenance is needed to elevate to 4 Stars
Course is fun
In good shape and fun to play. No one out here today. Solid golf course.
Aeration
Greens had just been sanded and punched. I understand that this is a necessary evil, but come on now being advised of it until you get to the course is terrible. At that point it’s to late to make plans elsewhere
