Heron Lakes Golf Club - Greenback Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Club is home to two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the Great Blue Course and the Greenback Course. Both utilize the rugged natural terrain in different ways, offering challenges that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. The Greenback Course is a versatile parkland layout that is gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. It is a less demanding design than the Great Blue but it still has plenty of challenges in store. There are 86 bunkers framing the elevated greens and six ponds come into play throughout however the mature trees present the most prominent threat. The par 3s on this golf course can be especially tough. The more challenging elements are nicely balanced by large, inviting greens and generous landing areas.

Nice day - Great Round
Beautiful day/ Morning for golf! Only issue due to the prior and upcoming heat of the day the conditions were wet as things were over watered.. Biggest issue was in the sand as it was damp and packed. Otheriwse if I stayed out of the traps it was fine!
always fun to play.. needs more water, though pretty hot days...
snack cart sells things too expensive ;(
What a Disappointment!
I used to live in Portland and played this course often. I have not played it in over 20 years until today and was flabbergasted by the overall experience. There was no starter or greeter, the carts are old and in poor condition, and the course itself is not well maintained.
Fairways were dry and hardpan, fairway bunkers were poorly maintained (one broken rake for a large bunker!), and on-course "amenities" were non-existent. There is no bathroom on the front nine at all, limited drinking water throughout the course, and large flocks of geese -- with all of their waste -- litters the course.
Clearly, there is no pride in the way this course is being presented to the public. It gets a lot of play, but any positive reviews are ill deserved. I now live in the Palm Springs, CA area and play at least three rounds a week at a variety of well maintained course around the desert -- paying between $45 and $80 in season, and as low as $25 in the heat of our summer there.
I paid $20 for a "Hot Deal" time. I would never pay any more than that for this course.
Awesome course and has lots of wildlife and amazing veiws.
Absolutely love this course and great blue. I shot the best round of my life with a 79. Staff is very friendly and course was in great condition. Will definitely be playing there again!
Couse in great shape
Greens were firm and fast and would hold a good short iron from the fairway. Pace was excellent, finished in just over 4 hours. Fairways had a few browned out areas but at least the sprinkler heads had yardage to the center (per peeve of mine.) Hot deal worked out well and they honor "youth on course" discount for my son!
They’re close to losing it
Played two weeks ago and the course played better, greens rolled a lot better. Today greens were slow and bumpy. Fairways were terrible, patches of wet dead grass with patches of thicker wet grass. Some greens half of the green was just watered and the other half was dry. Completely disappointed.
Always a great course, but slow
Started us on the back nine, got behind a group that was slow(like 3 holes behind the group that was In front of them.) the layout has a nice mix of shots. Lots of wildlife(bunnies squirrels) and we were lucky to see a big beaver late. Greens are pretty really good Considering the pounding they take a day which means the greens crews work hard. Sand was a bit hard.
Great Golf Course
The course was in excellent shape. They were very busy but the tee times were right on time. The marshall was visible throughout the round and kept everyone moving along nicely.
Heron Lakes golf course
I have played there many times it’s one of my favorite courses I just would like to have known that they had sanded some of the greens it was still a very good day and I enjoyed myself very much
Tremendous Value!
Great course(s) for the money. The course is starting to firm-up a bit too from the sloppy winter.
Don't pass this course up
I've been playing this course for several years now regularly. I'm usually out there at least once a week, on either of the two courses, great blue or green back. The food is good and the prices are fair. Both courses are playing in great shape; the Greenback can be a little sloppy this time of year due to it being in a lower land. The greens are fantastic though. Pace was a little slow today but it wasn't the golf courses fault. It was almost 70 degrees and everyone wanted to get out, including this guy. The Pro Shop doesn't have a lot of equipment but the staff is some of the best you're ever going to encounter anywhere.
Cheers.
Just The Worst!
I golf an average of 70 times a year not the most but more than most people. I have only been golfing in the PNW since October 2017. My experience in the Pacific Northwest has been pleasant, Very wet but most courses have been so accommodating it has made up for the soggy conditions. This course was not in good shape even for the time of year. The staff was rude and very unprofessional. They pushed our Tee time back over an hour for a frost delay. Which would have been understandable if that was the case for everyone but they were picking and choosing which groups to delay. After nine holes we had a pace of about 2 hours and 4 minutes for a 4some. This pace was more than acceptable due to course conditions being extremely wet on taking care of the greens had not even been vacuumed. When making the turn a martial approached us and told us we had to pick up the pace or we would be asked to leave. This on a day where they were so backed up because of that "frost delay" that there were groups waiting on every single Tee box. It's hard to golf a fast round with 4 people walking when you're trudging through the soggiest wettest Marshland you've ever seen. Not to mention the tremendous amount of goose and duck feces and the amount of geese and Ducks all over the course upwards of 35000. This course is far overpriced and yes even at $30 a round it's overpriced they're rude they're poorly managed and the amenities in the kitchen and the bathroom are filthy. I do not recommend this course to anyone even if you're getting a good deal.
Greenback in September
The course was in good condition for the time of ear. What normally might be the rough was quite dry, but otherwise the fairways and greens were in good condition. Speedwise, the greens were about average. Greenback is a flat course, so a cart isn't as necessary as on a hilly course or a course where green to tee is far. Great Blue(the sister course) may be more challenging, but Greenback offers plenty of challenging holes and opportunities to get in trouble if you're not hitting the ball with accuracy or choose to try to cut corners. All in all a fun course to play.
Slow play...
and bad greens. Had to call the pro shop due to slow play... it was the only time we saw a "ranger". Then he left and it stayed slow. The course is not in good shape. The starter bad mouthed Redtail but the conditions and marshalls were great there the day before.
Close
Everything was fine - except after I checkin about 30 mins before my tee time I noticed group ahead of were not full and being a single internally questioned why I wasn't invited to move up. When I asked I was told "you have a hot deal, so that's the time you'll go"
Heron Lakes Green side
The course is in beautiful condition. The only issue I had playing there for the first time was the lack of signage or direction to the next tee hole.
