Heron Lakes Golf Club - Greenback Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Club is home to two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the Great Blue Course and the Greenback Course. Both utilize the rugged natural terrain in different ways, offering challenges that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. The Greenback Course is a versatile parkland layout that is gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. It is a less demanding design than the Great Blue but it still has plenty of challenges in store. There are 86 bunkers framing the elevated greens and six ponds come into play throughout however the mature trees present the most prominent threat. The par 3s on this golf course can be especially tough. The more challenging elements are nicely balanced by large, inviting greens and generous landing areas.

Rough greens
I put this course before, but I’ve had many times for the greens are in much better shape. Golfers on the course do not care about their divots on the green
Give it a try!
I have played Great Blue many times, but never Greenback. My mistake! It was interesting, had more tress and water hazards. And, it was in great shape. I think I might prefer it over the blue course!
Greenback
Played white tees. Driver not needed for most holes. Short course, make sure you know where the end of fairway is on dog legs so you don't hit through them. Greens is great shape- besides multiple ball marks not repaired on every green. Greens vary- some are flat, others have undulations. Most are generous in size. Fairways in great shape! Bunkers are good as well. Some fairways and a couple greens have goose turds...very organic. I like this course...kinda laid back muni-style, but with some class and challenge. Will return over and over.
Best Course in Portland!
Heron lakes Greenbacks is in my opinion the best course in Portland. I love this course.
Lightning fast greens.
My friend used to work there for a few years and used to play both courses all the time.
Had a blast after not playing here for some years.
And as anyone that's played a lot of golf here it lives up to the saying:
"no break Heron lake".
Some of you know what I'm talking about. lol
Didn't cost too many greenbacks
I'm not a good golfer, and I tend to play executive courses of about 2000 yds per 9 holes. But I've been striking the ball unusually well lately, and had a $20 Golf Now credit, so I gave this course a try. Friends and past playing partners had recommended it. The fairways were wide, there were no hills, but a number of water hazards and traps did me in. I lost 5 balls during the round It was difficult at times to determine where the greens were on the longer holes, as a first-time player. Other than a few random wet spots, the course was dry and the greens in good shape. I sank a 45-foot putt, but otherwise had nothing good happen. For an average or better golfer, there are enough pitfalls there to offer some challenges.
Wide open and beautiful
This was just what i needed to get my confidence back. A great course in perfect condition.
Nice jOb
For March golf in the Portland area the course was in excellent shape and the greens were good.
Wouldn't bother coming back
Played both courses at Heron Lakes before, but forgot how dingy the facilities have become. Mildew smell from the outdoor carpet, the club house is nothing more than a mobile trailer that is on its last leg, bathrooms were gross, and staff at the pro shop were seemingly inconvenienced by us at check-in. I can say that the course was in decent shape considering it is early March and we are just coming off of a few weeks of snow, greens were better than expected. Worst part of the course is the incredible amount of bird crap. 4 out of 5 balls will come to lie on feces, guaranteed.
For the price, the course is decent, but there are plenty of better courses/club houses/pro shop staffs in the Portland area for the same price. I won't be going back to Heron Lakes until they make some changes.
Fall is in the air.
Leaves are on the ground but the course is In great shape. The tee boxes have been moved around to change the feel of the holes and length making it feel like the first time playing here.
Greenback Sunday review
I was able to get a convenient tee time at 8:00 am. I was matched with a terrific twosome that were fun to play with and matched my twosome’s ability. 18 holes, walking, took 4 hours. We had a great time.
