Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Las Sendas Golf Club's course, opened in 1995 and among the toughest U.S. courses. Two Zagat surveys have ranked it among the top 50 U.S. golf courses.

Las Sendas Golf Club offers a desert course demanding top play as it takes golfers through the Usery Mountains, with a vista of Phoenix as the tradeoff for managing rough land close to 1,800 feet above the desert. Jones didn't create a course with whimsical decorations like railroad ties, and he didn't build targets. The golf course is for those who strategize, mapping the way from tee to green.

After a round at Las Sendas Golf Club, head to Las Sendas Grille, for the full bar, including wines from California, Australia and Europe, as well as four tap beers and domestic and imported bottles.

Surprise, surprise!

For years, I had heard how difficult Las Sendas was and how you really didn’t wanna play it because it would beat you up. I didn’t find that to be the case at all, and I am a bogey golfer. Fortunately, we were hooked up with a member who was very helpful in finding routes off the tee, But he quit at nine and we were on our own on the backside. Course was in very good shape. Probably the best overseed I’ve seen this season. Greens are hot so you want to stay below the pin. Service level is very very good although pricey. A bag of peanuts was $4.36. Two beers were basically $18 and with a tip of $20.

I’ll continue to look for good deals at this course. I was able to book around for $150 which was a really good deal.

Too early…

The course is fantastic, But we played under extremely cold conditions. Really expected there would be a frost delay, but there was not, although there should’ve been. Have we played a little bit later, the round would’ve been much more enjoyable. I’m looking forward to going back and playing under better conditions. The greens were like cement and it was impossible to hold the ball on the green.

Epic scenery and plenty of challenges

On paper this course doesn't look too difficult, but most of the holes are measured, or seem to be at least, as the crow flies. Where you must land your shots to keep the ball in play requires more distance on approach typically and with plenty of bunkers and other extreme slopes, if you miss those shots your score will balloon quickly. The par 3's are relatively short, which means added distance to the par 4's. The course is at a higher altitude than Phoenix, which means it gets colder and you lose distance accordingly. Aside from the aforementioned challenges, the course offers a great desert experience and amazing beauty. We also saw a very large bobcat and a monster javelina on the course along with the usual array of roadrunners, quail and other birds. The greens are fast, but fair and true. The only real complaint was the pace of play, which should have been addressed by a marshal, who was unfortunately not present. The people who come to this course with limited skills quickly realize they are outmatched. Rather than just picking up and moving on, they typically struggle and take much longer than they should to play a hole, or even a single shot. I was amazed by a guy in front of us who dribbled balls off the tee, took 9 practice swings before he actually hit the ball, and left his cart in places that required a lot of backtracking steps. I realize that tourism is a big deal in this part of the country, especially during winter, but please, if this is you then consider golfing elsewhere or not at all. There are plenty of executive courses and driving ranges that are great places to develop and improve skills. I highly recommend getting a tee time before 2pm so you don't run out of daylight. Las Sendas is a course that requires frequent visits to really score low. It's worth the money and you'll feel great about your game when the pars and birdies land there.

Friendly pro shop staff, very slow pace of play, and both the halfway house and oasis were closed in the afternoon

Excellent Condition

The course is in great shape, and difficult due to general layout. Many dog leg's, elevated greens and targeted drives, which when you haven’t played it before takes some serious planning. Like to think I will improve the next time I play due to a little course knowledge. I think the price is about right for the course, you can pay a lot more golf in the Phoenix and not have course that is this nice and this tough. Bring your A Game.

Las Sendas in great shape

Kudo's to the greenskeeper for really doing a great job on keeping the course in great condition. Tees are ok, fairways perfect and greens are very fast but true. Will be back.
