Papago Golf Club
About
Papago Golf Course is conveniently situated just a few minutes from downtown Phoenix though you would never be able to tell with the peace and seclusion provided by the course's location in Papago Park. The golf course sits at the base of Papago Buttes, past the rugged red rocks you can see Phoenix skyline. The course was designed by William Francis Bell, whom you may know for Torrey Pines in San Diego. The challenging layout features undulating greens framed with strategically placed bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding. Water hazards appear on a few holes as well. It's a tough but straightforward layout that is still playable for a range of skill levels. Since opening in 1963, Papago has hosted numerous events including the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and Phoenix Open Qualifying.

Papago Buttes! Photo submitted by Hansel4033523 on 05/11/2013
only played the front 9 because of a frost delay
Nice layout with interesting holes. Greens were a bit bare, but were nicely sloped and quick enough. Better than a muni, but not a resort.
One of the best municipal courses in AZ
Really well maintained municipal course at the foot of Papago park. The course is in great shape, with lush fairways and rough. The greens are always soft and roll very true. I play this course quite a bit and its always in good shape. There may be weeds here and there, but for the price you really can't beat it.
Interesting Municipal Course
This course is generally highly rated, and you can see why when you play it. It is in better than average condition for a municipal course. The layout is interesting with a lot of doglegs and a fair number of elevation changes. The fairways are cut a little thin, and if you get into the rough, you are likely to be hitting from a poor lie, so focus on accuracy.
The pace was slow the day we played, but it was a great fall day, and it looked like everyone who golfed was trying to get in a round.
We started about 20 minutes after our reserved Tee time, and it took us almost five hours to finish.
The beverage cart made numerous rounds, and there was water on the course as well.
We will go back.
Good public course in Scottsdale
our first course to play in Scottsdale. Not a great welcome from the pro shop staff, very disinterested person. We were paired with a great couple from Phoeniz who played it alot. They were great. Good course, forgiving for the driving game. Course was in very nice shape, but was hosting the city championship that day, so it was back up in spots, hence the 5 hour round. A definite play in Scottsdale.
Not spectacular views but awesome course
The course offered a fair amount of challenge from the tees and elevated greens in some holes with a discreet bunkers in play making every shot to think before taking it. The GPS was accurate giving a lot of help while playing. The staff was very friendly. To be back for sure!!
ver good value for the money.
Don't judge the book by the cover. Coming into the parking lot, we were not sure. Once we started playing it was pretty and just challenging enough. Very women friendly. huge challenging greens! Played in 4 hours on a Saturday morning
Papago has a great facility and a very friendly staff!
First off, the tee boxes are perfectly flat! The fairways are lush green grass, the rough can be difficult but the fairways are wide so you should hit the fairway. The greens are in pristine condition right now, I really would recommend this course to any type of golfer! It a great test of golf!
Worth it
Papago is a course that looks benign. It has interesting and attractive -- though not spectacular -- scenery, very light rough (not counting the desert), and a layout that is fairly straightforward, but it can jump up and bite you on almost any shot. Consequently, you need to focus from tee to hole if you want to score well.
The greens and the bunkers were consistent and very well maintained. On the greens, approach shots held, putts rolled true, and the speed (probably about 10) was the same from the first green to the last. Bunkering seems fairly abundant, and I only remember seeing one (a fairway bunker) that did not have depth to it if you were hitting toward the green.
The course offers all the length you want, with five sets of tees that range from 5400 to over 7300 yards. I played the 6771 blues, which includes three par-3s of over 200 yards.
The driving range is excellent, the practice putting green is large, and there are separate chipping greens and a practice bunker area. I suggest taking advantage of all four of those in advance of playing the course.
Although we rode, the course is walkable, but not flat by any means. I'll be going back soon with my push cart to see how the course feels under foot.
From my perspective, this is a course that is worth your time and hard-earned dollars. It wants decent accuracy (and, depending on your tee choice, some length) off the tee, will make you use a variety of irons for approach shots, and will make you look at every putt, even a three-footer. In short, it will challenge every aspect of your game, and that will make you a better player.
An added bonus: there are no houses on this golf course, just wide open spaces, some of which are desert. The staff is quite friendly and the pace of play (for us) was good. If I have any knock on the course it is that you kind of need to know where you are going (there is a map inside each cart), and that the carts have sensors on them to keep them out of the desert. Now if they would provide a system like that for my golf ball....
Solid layout in good shape, especially for a muni course.
Papgo is a challenging course for all levels. The layout presents plenty of risk and reward. The greens are generally pretty fast, but true. The fairways present a good mix of undulations, well placed bunkers and tricky rough. Adding to the challenge is the fact that it's location on the upslope of the Papago hills leaves it exposed to extra winds that come through the valley in late morning/ afternoon. This can make the course play another 4-7 strokes harder. It's location also affords some nice views of those hills that make a pleasant change from the view you would typically get from playing a course in the middle of the city.
Great golf value
Don't come here if you are looking for a posh clubhouse and special touch amenities. You will be disappointed with the portable buildings that serve in their place. However, if you are looking for a great golf experience for a reasonable price, Papago offers outstanding value. The course has features plenty of elevation changes, well guarded green complexes and some decent views of the surrounding area. The greens are fast and true which is a favorite feature of many of the regulars. What I especially appreciate is the condition of the fairways and the rough. Even in the summer, the fairway bermuda is short and manageable. I look forward to my next round at Pagago.
Classic Layout.
I've played Papago for 25+ years. The course is better now than it was in the past, you can actually intend to and make a putt! The conditioning is better. The layout is still wonderful. The redesign has actually improved the course. There have been some changes, most notable to me is the 9th hole. It seems a bit out of place to be honest, much more modern feeling than the other holes. Some changes have made the course far better, like the water to the right of the first green though I think the green itself takes some getting used to. Though trees have been removed, the ones that were essential to shot shaping and course management are definitely still here. I miss the old clubhouse and hope they add a clubhouse worthy of the property (classic slump block would be nice to preserve the original feel and era of the course. IMHO). The staff leaves a lot to be desired. They have been dismissive, inattentive and overall unfriendly in my recent experiences. Still an excellent value course and I forgot to mention the distinctive views of Papago park.
Greens were in great shape
About three weeks ago, I heard from a friend that Papago was in good shape; I found it was, and I have played there four times in the last three weeks.
Course is in perfect shape.
Value and condition of course was excellent.
I would recommend course to anyone.
Bring some game if you play from the tips!
The course provides the greatest ratio of difficulty to the dollar over any course in the greater Phoenix area. I still love this course after not playing it in years. The loss of some of the trees is equaled by the stretched out back tees. It plays like it should in a modern day remake. The range is now awesome. The speed of the greens is generally just right on these rolling greens.
Good Shape for Late Summer
The greens were in surprising great condition for late summer and the fairways were in good shape as well. Do not expect a lot
of amenities at this course. Their is no clubhouse or decent pro shop other than a modular type building. I certainly hope they have a new clubhouse in the works.
great value for cost
was pleasantly surprised, hadn't played here in more than a year and was in as good condition as any high end course I've played this summer. Greens and fairways excellent.
Papago: Excellent conditions, quality track, good price
Played Papago for the first time on July 29th and enjoyed it quite a lot; mainly because the greens were excellent. All surfaces were in great shape, but the greens were the best we'd played in a couple of months.
We played the white tees (6382 yds; we drive around 230yds). While I enjoyed the round(s), I don't love the layout. Not that it's awful. In fact, I like the varied elevation changes throughout the course. Playing it the second time helped to understand how to approach some holes a little better.
My dissatisfaction with the layout is due to having a lot of long approaches (partly due to having to avoid trouble off of the tee) and because three of the four par 3s are long (around 200 yds), and play to the same club. I'm up for a challenge, but it just seemed like I was hitting the same long irons on approaches over and over (and not that well, but that's on me).
There are also some holes that have uphill approaches that are difficult to assess, especially the first time through.
I'm not trying to dissuade people from golfing Papago. I enjoyed it, and I'll definitely be back. However, I wouldn't label it a resort or "feel good" type course.
Don't get it
I don't get the rave reviews about this course. When I played the course was in serious need of renovation. I know the city attempted to do so, but ran out of money. It shows. The course is overrated and overpriced. There is nothing special here, the "clubhouse" is a trailer, given the chance to play for free or pay for somewhere else, I'd opt for somewhere else.
