Papago Golf Club
About
Papago Golf Course is conveniently situated just a few minutes from downtown Phoenix though you would never be able to tell with the peace and seclusion provided by the course's location in Papago Park. The golf course sits at the base of Papago Buttes, past the rugged red rocks you can see Phoenix skyline. The course was designed by William Francis Bell, whom you may know for Torrey Pines in San Diego. The challenging layout features undulating greens framed with strategically placed bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding. Water hazards appear on a few holes as well. It's a tough but straightforward layout that is still playable for a range of skill levels. Since opening in 1963, Papago has hosted numerous events including the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and Phoenix Open Qualifying.

Papago Buttes! Photo submitted by Hansel4033523 on 05/11/2013
nice layout, with challanging holes
Bring all your clubs for this course, you'll need them! From the White Tees it's still 6300 yards, and with some nice doglegs, and a few ups and downs, you'll need to be able to hit a variety of shots. Course was in very good shape, greens very nice.
Water on the course at strategic locations, so your not dying of thirst (even in the 110 degrees). Nice mature trees here and there. Nice practice area for all shots(driving range, putting green, and chipping area). Very scenic location.
The course is super friendly for carts.
While the par 3s are long (3 of 4 beyond 200yds), the par 4s require shot making from the tee, but allow for all shape shots into the greens. Nice speed on the greens, good contours and nice bunker sand.
Challenging yet playable.
The greens had come back from being punched a couple of weeks ago. The fairways were generally excellent. There were very few players out on a hot July day, so pace of play was also excellent.
the course has great veiws of the valley
wanted to all winter long put green fees where to much, was excited to play their this summer to see what the course was like for the first time.
was disappointed. no makers on fairway had look for sprinkler heads to find distance, no sand on cart to fill divot's, that explained why I was always landing in a divot's. all the sun city courses are in a lot better condition then this course and green fees are $50 in the winter and $25 to $36 in the summer.
Sad to say I will not be taking family or friends to this course again.
Worth the green fee!
Only my 4th time playing this course, but for the money it is a great deal. Fairways and greens were excellent...greens held will an putted true. A good tee ball is rewarded. Really enjoy coming and playing this course...a good challenge.
Great Course All Around
When you walk up and see a pro shop in a trailer, you automatically assume you're in for the worst. The driving range had fresh grass, the chipping green was very receptive and the staff was very friendly.
I am a scratch golfer who can hit a driver upwards of 400 yards. I chose this course because of the length from the tips. 7350 yards.. 600 yard Par 5's, into the wind, 260 yard par 3's. This course delivered to all my expectations and I got it for $14 on a hot deal. I shot 3 under and will definitely come back for more.
Great shape for July
Over all the course is in really nice shape. Greens were fast, putted true and receptive. Fairways conditions could be on of the best in the valley for summer time.
Better than it was.
Papago is in better shape than it was a few years ago from what I've been told and it's getting better. However it still needs some fairway work (weeds growing in patches) and cart path work as well.
The bunkers however are in great shape and that makes it easier to get out of.
The course has an awesome layout
Course was in outstanding shape, this course is in the best condition during the summer when rounds are down. I play here at least 3 times a month and they punched the greens a few weeks back. Minimal dead spots on fairways. I'll be back soon. I play by myself mostly and always get around in less than 2.5 hours. Staff is always friendly and prices or range balls and beverages are reasonable. A great value for the money.
This course rewards great shots...
Love playing Papago when I can. Challenging, but fair course.
Must play course
Still the jewel of the desert. Even if you are hitting the ball well these greens will test your skill and patience.
Renovated Classic Muni
The renovation done to this course has greartly enhanced it's appeal. Challenging but fair to every level of golfer. You can tell that summer has arrived in a few spots, but over all, still an enjoyable and challenging round of golf.
This course has an exorbitant price.. Even though, it's HOT DEAL
papago is normal course , but very very expensive.....
Especially in the winter season....Even though, they have bad
condition fairway and golf green.... papago golf club have a
good location ,so they are very expensive........ it was an
exorbitant price
Awesome Layout and gorgeous view.
The staff was great and the cart guys! Snack bar wasn't open for early tee times. This course is one on my top course in AZ. Definitely will play it again and again!
Fun layout and good shade trees for hot az summer
The course is a fun layout with traps placed in places that make the course a good challenge. The long par 3's keep you honest and the par 5's which begin and end each nine are very fun.
You will hit all the sticks in your bag and the view of the Papago Mountains are one of a kind.
Old School Golf
Even with makeover, Papago delivers old school ball striking...what you see is what you've got. Course is in good condition...not hard to keep it on the grass, but you won't. Greens were fast and true. Enough trees you might have to bend the ball a couple of times. Feels like your always playing into the predominate southwest wind. Stay hydrated, prices were reasonable.
gotta love summer golf in Az.
Played Papago which is one of my favorite courses, its hard to think of this course as a muni. Conditions were great, pace of play was 21/2 hrs. Played through a foursome at the turn and had the whole back nine to myself.....gotta love summer golf.2$ domestics all day was a bonus.
well cared for tough course
nice putting and chipping area, golf shop area marginal, fairways very nice and sand in bunkers that are quite deep, greens putt so nice and area cared for well and seldom do they go straight, a nice lay out, but the carts need some up dating
The best greens ever
Pros:
-Super smooth, perfect greens!
-Beautiful scenery all around with the Papago buttes featuring prominently.
-Good course layout. Difficult and long par 3s. Bunkers are brutal.
-No neighborhoods to hit into.
Cons:
-Clubhouse is subpar. It appears to be a portable building.
-There is only one bathroom/water facility for the whole course. While the water machine is cold and filtered, it is slow!
I really enjoyed my round at Papago. It is a straight up challenge for just about anyone. I was consistently amazed at how far back the black tees were. Brush up on your sand game before your round. The greenside bunkers are deep and steep.
