Papago Golf Course is conveniently situated just a few minutes from downtown Phoenix though you would never be able to tell with the peace and seclusion provided by the course's location in Papago Park. The golf course sits at the base of Papago Buttes, past the rugged red rocks you can see Phoenix skyline. The course was designed by William Francis Bell, whom you may know for Torrey Pines in San Diego. The challenging layout features undulating greens framed with strategically placed bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding. Water hazards appear on a few holes as well. It's a tough but straightforward layout that is still playable for a range of skill levels. Since opening in 1963, Papago has hosted numerous events including the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and Phoenix Open Qualifying.

Challenging course with excellent greens

The course was quite challenging with the blind dog legs and narrow approaches on some of the holes. Sand traps were plentiful but the sand itself was hard consistency.
The course has several concrete cart paths to get you started on the right path but after that there are no defined pathways. The scenery is beautiful. The greens were large and undulating and in perfect condition. Pin placements were challenging.

Fantastic value.

Can't go wrong with playing this course on a trip to Phoenix. Unbeatable value. Well maintained, challenging course especially from the tips. I like that it doesn't go in between houses or communities. Walkable.

Wide open course.

Break out the driver and have fun. Lots of room for error here. Its hard to lose a golf ball. Greens are undulating and well kept. Club house leaves a lot to be desired as it is essentially a trailer. Played on a weekday, so pace of play was not an issue.

too much waiting

The fairways were great as were the greens, but that is where it ended. The clubhouse is a trailer, and they stack the tee times too close. We waited on every hole, which is unacceptable. It is an easy solution but one that would affect revenue, so they just expect you to wait.

Below average

Played early to catch an early flight. Our group of 12 selected the course to be close to the airport for a early flight. That is the only good thing about the course. The club house is a mobile home. The staff had torn pants, tee shirt and untied shoes. The course was OK if you were on the green, but the rough was just gravel. Pace of play was good (about 4 hours). Overall it does not compare to any Troon course.

Greens are Fantastic

Really enjoyed the round of golf at Papago. The course was in great shape and the greens rolled as nice as any i played in PHX.

Will be back next winter!

Papago on Saturday Afternoon

Good layout, pace of play was slow but what do you expect for a Saturday afternoon. Greens are in very good shape, some work needs to be done on teeing grounds.

Solid course, better than reviewed!

This is a golf course. There are no real frills here, but it is a players golf course. The design is very traditional but the bunkering makes it fell very modern.

Granted, there was lots of dormant grasses off the tees/fairways/greens, but to be expected in February.

If you want to play a well designed players course, play the tips and have fun. This is a solid course!

Great renovation

First time I had played here since it was renovated 4-5 years back and I was very impressed. From all the way back, this would be all the course you want, but more forward tees are very forgiving. No real forced carries or desert-style golf here. The course was in good condition, a little soft after some recent rains. Greens were a bit on the slow side, but in good condition. I'm eager to play here again.

Greens were in great shape.

I went out as a single and was paired with three local guys that provided enough local knowledge to make my round very enjoyable. The staff were all very nice and helpful. This all made for a very enjoyable outing.

good but pricey for a muny.

Nice course. Well maintained. Greens a little bumpy from mower, but ok. I just think 85 bucks for a kung is a little much.

Fun course; terrible pace

Played this course twice in the past week because it was close to the airport. Flew into Scottsdale to have a golf weekend with friends for a few days.

The first day was much better as the pace kept moving, but the second time we played it was inexcusable. 20 minutes per hole! The club knew that the pace was slow, but never did anything to improve the pace.

Had it not been for the second day experience, would have rated the course as a 4.

Well maintained.

We found Papago well maintained and staffed on an usual chilly day in Arizona. The mountain and butte surroundings are a positive but found the MANY large sand traps trying. We also noted the long yardages on most of the par 3's from the white tees to be more than we could handle at our level of play.

dangerous layout

i found greens too close to next tee boxes // balls came close to me not once but twice in 9 holes // sand beside greens are rock hard // 4 times my group skulled it out of the kitty litter // on score card it states rocks in sand are obstuctions
i would play again at maybe 30 dollars // i was not impessed for 75 dollars
