San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

5+ hour round
Started 25 mins late and had 4 groups backed up on hole 2. Nothing was done about it. 5+ hours for a round on a 100+ degree day when most of the course is open is wild.

Greens a tad slow
Greens were on the slow side. However course in excellent condition for this time of the year. I saw previous reviews that work was being done. Looks to be completed. We’ve already booked another tee time to play it again.

Loved playing here Great shape tee to green! One issue is my GPS took me 5 miles from course apparently is common with maps so I was late and pro shop took care of me! Hot day about 5 degrees cooler out in the valley!

Great time playing this course for the second time in a year. Only criticism is that several bunkers were being worked on so they should have been deemed out of play with a free drop out of them. Otherwise the staff did provide bottles of water since there was no drinking water on the course and no beverage cart. Will come back again for sure.
