Ventana Canyon - Canyon Course

About
One of two Tom Fazio-designed golf courses at this Tucson resort, the Canyon Course at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon is classic desert golf, set against the backdrop of the Sonoran Desert enhanced by its surroundings of saguaros, deer, roadrunners, quail and birds. The 6,836-yard, par-72 layout rolls through the Esperro Canyon, incorporating a massive formation known as Whaleback Rock in its design. The golf course has several memorable holes, including a couple of difficult par 3s - the 13th and 16th - as well as the reachable par-5 finishing hole, which features a man-made waterfall.

Ventana Canyon
Rode the Greens (6537/70.7/135) in 4H, 15M midday as a 2some with Bob. Clear, calm and around 65.
Tees well maintained. Lush/level and nice to play from.
Fairways lush, cut tight with most divots filled in.
Ball can easily sit down and is penal in the dormant Bermuda rough. It provides a great contrast to the lush green everywhere else.
Sand traps very well maintained with good quality, light sand. And there are plenty of them on this layout.
Large Bermuda greens putt medium fast to fast. Firm and smooth, very consistent from green to green. You have to play for runout.
Excellent layout in very good playing condition. Very spread out Fazio design. Many forced carries, and if you miss fairways here by much, unlikely you can play it even if you find it. Customer service excellent from all encountered. No Drink cart today. Very nice grass practice area and balls are included in your fee. Highly recommended.
Great course!!
Played the mountain course. First time here, but will definitely be back! Beautiful course, in perfect condition!!!
Ventana Canyon
Rode the Greens (6537/70.7/135) in around 4H as a single. Windy, clear and around 60, felt like 50.
Tees lush/level and nice to play from.
Fairways lush with deceptively few flat lies.
Dormant Bermuda rough provides great contrast to the lush green everywhere else. Ball can easily sit down and is penal.
Sand traps plentiful and very well maintained with good quality, light sand.
Large Bermuda greens firm and smooth. Medium fast to fast and very consistent from green to green.
Fazio design that is very spread out. Many forced carries that are fair, but no tricked up holes. If you miss fairways here by much, probably in the native area that is 90% unplayable and probably unfindable. Customer service excellent from all encountered. Drink cart around several times. Very nice grass practice area and balls are included in your fee. Excellent layout in very good playing condition. Highly recommended.
Ventana Mountain
Rode the Greens (6537/71.4/139) in 4H, 10M twilight. Played the front as a 2some and the back as a 3some behind a 4some. Mid 60's, clear and calm.
Overseeded tees excellent with most divots repaired, level/lush.
Overseeded fairways lush and nice to play from.
Bermuda rough mostly dormant and not overseeded. Provides a great contrast with the lush green fairways, tees and greens.
Sand traps excellent. Around the greens plenty of soft white sand. Fairway bunkers more firm.
Large Bermuda greens smooth, firm and medium fast to fast. Getting around this course w/o a 3 putt is challenging. Much tougher than average greens IMO.
Very nice Fazio design in excellent playing condition. Depending on your tee choice, many tee shots hitting over no man's land. The Greens feature several 200 yard forced carries as an example. Long climbs in carts, play down hill, then repeat the process is a common theme. Few holes are severely uphill. Customer service excellent on all levels. Bottled water provided. Drink cart around once late afternoon. Nice, all grass practice area which includes range balls. Driving range is close to a mile from the Pro Shop and the basic carts do not have GPS. Highly recommended.
Mountain
Rode the Greens (6537/71.4/139) in 3.5H mid day as a 3some. Mid 60's, partly cloudy and calm.
Overseeded tees level/lush with only a few divots unfixed divots. Excellent.
Overseeded fairways lush and very nice to play from.
Dormant Bermuda rough provides a great contrast with the lush green fairways, tees and greens. Very unpredictable clumpy lies make it penal.
Sand traps excellent. Around the greens plenty of fine white sand. Fairway bunkers much more firm.
Very challenging large green complexes with swales and drop offs. Bermuda greens smooth, firm and medium fast to fast.
Customer service excellent on all levels. Bottled water provided. Nice, all grass practice area which includes range balls. Only negatives are that it is close to a mile from where the Pro Shop is located. Basic carts do not have GPS. Highly recommended.
Mountain
Rode the Greens (6537/71.4/139) in 4H mid day as a 4some. Mid 60's overcast and breezy.
Overseeded tees were excellent with only a few divots here and there. Level/lush.
Overseeded fairways were lush and nice to play from.
Bermuda rough is not overseeded. Mostly lush and maintained at a level that the ball often sat up. Usually okay to play from.
Sand traps were excellent. Around the greens plenty of fine white sand. Fairway bunkers are firm.
Bermuda greens were smooth, firm and medium fast to fast.
Customer service excellent on all levels. Only negatives are that the basic carts do not have GPS and that this complex is REALLY spread out. Nice, all grass driving range which includes range balls. However, it is close to a mile from where the Pro Shop is located. This course would be almost unwalkable because of this plus on many tees you ride hundreds of yards from the last green to again play downhill. Bottled water provided.
Tom Fazio design. Many holes have severe elevation changes. Common them is that you climb long distances in carts, then play down hill, then repeat the process. Almost no holes were severely uphill. Tight layout in spots with desert scape surrounding nearly every hole on both sides. If you are not straight this course will become penal real quickly. Excellent layout, one of the top ten courses I have ever played. Very enjoyable layout to play. Highly recommended.
Canyon
Rode the Greens (6537/70.7/135) in around 5H as a single. Supposed to play with 3 singles, but they were MIA... and the starter let two 4somes go off before he would let me go. One group quickly let me play through, the other did not. Got a sarcastic "thanks for playing so slow behind us" from one of the guys as I drove up to #18 green. Breezy, partly cloudy and around 65.
Tom Fazio design. This is THE most spread out course I have ever played. They will not allow walkers because there are 4-5 holes that are about 1/3 mile to the next tee box. Course is not well marked. Very easy to get on the Mountain course by mistake.
No tricked up holes, the forced carries were fair. The tight holes were balanced by more open holes. However, there are no holes I would classify as wide open, at most you had a bailout on 1 side.
Tees overseeded with good coverage, lush and nice to play from.
Fairways were overseeded and lush and deceptively undulating, few flat lies.
Bermuda rough is dormant and generally penal, the ball sat down and it's clumpy.
Sand traps were plentiful and very well maintained with good quality, light sand.
Bermuda greens are firm and smooth. Medium fast to fast and very consistent from green to green. Probably the quickest Bermuda greens I have putted on since I last played here. Immaculately maintained.
Customer service other than the starter was excellent from all encountered. Very nice grass driving range is included in your fee. Excellent layout in very good playing condition. Highly recommended.
Great track, tough greens
Very scenic, layout is a little confusing. Fairways and greens are in great shape. The greens are fast and unreadable. If you think they will break away from mountains, sometimes they don’t
