Forty-Niner Country Club
About
Situated between the Catalina and Rincon Mountains, Forty Niner Country Club runs alongside a wooded riverbed. The golf course features fairways lined with mesquites, giant cottonwoods, eucalyptus trees, and weeping willows. Desert shrubbery also lines the fairways. The course has a traditional layout that sprawls across gently rolling terrain. It's a nice walkable golf course but it's not easy. Rather than distance, this course requires accurate shot placement and careful strategy in order to maneuver the tricky doglegs and subtly elevated greens. The most difficult hole on the course comes early on. The par-4 fifth is an only seemingly narrow hole but the double-tiered green has a dramatic slope right in the center. Forty Niner Country Club finishes with a par 3 that requires a carry over water. If played smartly, it offers a great birdie opportunity.

Good bones.
Overall fun day. The course has potential to be a much nicer experience. I would return, but many trees along the fairways need extensive trimming.
This would give the golfer a fair chance at hitting more fairways.
Greens could be better
I played this course about 3 weeks ago and it was in great shape but this week I was disappointed to find that the greens had dried out and were bumpy and uneven with aeration holes on many of them.
My favorite Tucson course.
I really love playing 49er, it’s a nice old fashion layout, not your typical desert target golf. Some of the fairways weren’t in good condition, but the green were nice.
First time playing here in years
I was a little concern when I read reviews that the course was not in its best shape. I'm not sure what those reviews were all about, for the most part I found the course to be in good/great shape (for Tucson winter conditions). Yes a few holes had hard spots but this is not a place that charges $150+ dollars a round. Amenities are great, staff is friend, course is challenging, I can't wait to play there again.
Course Conditions Continue To Improve
Overall an enjoyable round as the wind did increase the challenges on each shot. Tee's and fairways in good shape, however there seemed to be more "rough" along the fairways than expected. Mostly patchy spots in first cut of rough, then plenty of run out into dirt rough. The greens were dry and sunning fairly well. Bottom line was the wind expanded shot considerations and made distance a real factor.
Enjoyed this course
This was a great course just wish I was a better golfer. Areas outside of the green are really hard so if you hit the ball on the greens you’re good;)
Course has seen better days
I use to love to play this track but it has not been maintained this year. Greens need water and seed. Rough needs clean-up and a chainsaw. Be back next year not this year.
A great place to be out of doors
As you line up to hit a shot, you see the Catalina Mountains in the background and on another hole you see the Rincon Mountains. Very peaceful.
Sand traps needed sand and the tee boxes should be aerated. The course was well laid out with a feel of privacy.
Disappointing
I have always enjoyed playing forty niner. I really like the layout thru the mesquite trees. The course however needed some work. Most of the fairways had very little grass and the tees were not in much better shape. As far as the greens were concerned, they were playable unless you were putting downhill to a front pin location. I think the application of a little water would go a long way towards enhancing a better playing experience.
Rusty when it's so gusty
The constant wind with severe gusts made this round more challenging than usual. Good thing there was nothing on the line except my pride!:) Not having played in such windy conditions except maybe twice before, I found myself guessing whether my club selection should be one, two, and at times, even three clubs different from usual. I still had fun trying to navigate this added challenge realizing that I would need much more practice doing so in order to score better.
