Ventana Canyon - Mountain Course
About
The Mountain Course at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon, one of two Tom Fazio designs at this Tucson resort, is a classic desert-style target golf course has quick, undulating greens, elevated tee shots and a number of memorable holes. With four sets of tees, this par-72 course can be stretched to nearly 6,900 yards. The signature hole, the short par-3 third, is one of the most photographed holes in the Southwest and has been known to give up a few aces from balls that ricochet off the boulders that surround the green.

nice courses, beware the "varied" prices!
Both courses here are quite nice courses however, beware the variety of prices you may pay! I stayed at the resort and was given a price around $150 +tax to play the first day, only to find that my playing partners payed $100 +tax to play (and they were staying at the resort as well)...the next day, I asked about the difference in price and was given some b.s. answer about how "like airline prices, our prices vary based on availability and demand" and "they must have booked their times after I did". I pointed out that my reservation confirmation indicated that they were already booked when I booked and so that blew that argument out of the water. I then indicated that, as a result, I would like the same rate that my playing partners from the previous day had and was told that they could only offer me the $119 rate +tax. Still about $40 better than the day before but then I found out that my playing partners for day two were paying the "member" rate of $75, so... So, to make a short story long, always ask what the member rate is for the course and try to negotiate up from there and certainly don't expect to get any resort breaks if you are staying at the resort!
The best course in Tucson
The two Ventana Canyon courses never disappoint. Always in perfect condition. Incredible greens which putt so true if you can figure out how to read the breaks and speed. We love these courses.
Beautiful course
This is an excellent course. That has great views and is in great shape. The course is very playable. Only negative was friedliness of staff
Best course in Tucson Area
We have always loved playing the two courses at Ventana Canyon. I think they are the best courses, condition wise, you can play without a membership to a country club - and maybe it is even better than the country clubs. It never disappoints!
Not for your average player
We had an afternoon tee time. When we got there we were told there was a half hour delay due to frost in the morning. funny thing was the low was 45 that day. We had to wait on every tee box, and got only 12 holes in before dark. The course is difficult due to the narrow fairways. There are some great views on the front nine. signage to get to the course is not very good, I got lost after the round.
Great course... local knowledge vaulable
Played with a couple friends... only second time playing so almost like first timers... layout is a bit unique ...you have to follow closely the markers for to stay on the course...and correct hole... tee colors seemed to vary and be a bit odd also... could have been lack of explanation...
Beautiful day...not hot, not cold...a bit of a wind, but not bad...my playing partners were not great... one was off his game...the other groused about how difficult the course is... he shot a 92 and said he normally shoots high 80s at his home course...so did fine... I would golf here again anytime.
Great course - pace s l o w.
The course is beautiful,in great shape and always fun. However, the pace of play was ridiculous and they sent no fewer than 3 singles out after us makongatters worse. We had to finish in the dark. The ing said he tried
To move things along but he did not.
Awesome course!
This is a very nice course. While the fairways are open if you end up in the stuff you will have a hard time even finding your ball. The arrival was confusing as we were told to go the Loews entrance. There really was not any staff to take our bags and when we were done golfing we had to take our own bags to the car. Not sure if this was an anomaly.
Great course!
Played the canyon course. It was a great layout and in excellent condition.
Too slow
Our first obstacle was finding the pro shop. There are no signs or bag drop. The pro shop is behind a restaurant so some signage would help. The ride from the club house to the starter takes at least 10 minutes (I'm being generous here; I'm sure it took longer). The round started on time, and we rarely saw another group, BUT on a particularly difficult and intimidating par 3 the whole course backed up. There were 3 groups including ourselves on the tee. We waited on every shot from that point on. The round was easily 5+ hours. To add to the amount of time waiting for the group in front of us, the amount of time needed to navigate from hole to hole easily is at least 2 minutes per hole. That adds 30 minutes to the round. It is a beautiful course, but we would not go again.
Frustration guaranteed
Very nice course, BUT!!!!!!!!
In 35 years of playing public courses, I've never had such a difficult time just finding the course! It seems to be part of a resort, with a Loew's Hotel as the focal point. But there's no signage directing you to to the course, the hotel lobby clerk gave me incorrect directions, then the security guard at the guard shack sent me back to the hotel! Then they sent me down to a spot near a restaurant, where they said there was a small bagdrop. So my wife dropped me off there, but there's no apparent bagdrop, so I wandered around up and down the steps for 5 minutes or so till I finally spotted a person, and called out for help. She directed me to the right staircase, and at the corner of the restaurant I saw a tiny legend (in the same color as the building itself) that directed one to the Pro Shop. All in all it took a solid 20 minutes, and if I hadn't been meeting a friend there I'd have tried to cancel out altogether.
All this, and I actually played the mountain course about 1 1/2 years ago!
2-3 employees acted like they had no idea why I'd had such a hard time, but I finally found an honest one who told me the course is separate from the Hotel, that the Hotel absolutely refuses to allow any kind of signage re the course, and that there had even been litigation about it.
If I owned or ran this course, I'd like to think there was some way i could make sure that new arrivals to my course didn't start the day off angry and incredibly frustrated.
Canyon Course
We played the Canyon Course. Course was in great shape. Greens rolled true but difficult to read - mountain effect. No particularly difficult holes. Sprinkler heads were marked front/center/back but would have appreciated a yardage book or cart GPS.
Some very, very, long distances from green to next tee box. I would consider playing again the next time I visit Tucson!
Ventana Mountain
Great course with moderately challenging fairways. Well kept. Staff was friendly.
